Pikar got what he had coming to him. Letterman has every right to defend himself against baseless accusations. It is his show, the man comes on and begins insulting him, and he is supposed to sit there and just take it? No, Pikar was WAY out of line.
Using the metaphor of the house. You invite the guy to dinner and he throws up all over the table. How long before you throw his rear end out of the house?
yo, this shows a really bad side of dave, he's a hilarious guy but i don't think he was ready for Harvey's spin on life. He kinda dissed him with that GE bit, and but I'm sure he was right about the shill thing. I love both of theses people and it suck that they couldn't get down and talk. It's partly Letterman's fault for being a tight ass and partly Harvey's for trying to call out a guy in a public discourse.
I find this extremely rude.. Is Letterman usually this rude to his guest.. I mean why the heck do stars keep coming on his show to get disrespected.. This is not funny at all. This is pretty pathetic.. I think Dave needs to go, and they should bring in some young, enthusiastic funny guy.. Someone similar to Conan!
Last night I was going through some old videotapes and, having been an old fan of American Splendor from issue #3 onwards, came across the '87 appearance by Harvey when he invaded "Live at Five" and did military push-ups. I had never seen the other times he was on, and I looked them up here on youtube and they were all pretty fascinating. But geebus! did Dave reveal himself to be a totally sold-out asswipe or what! I wonder if Dave went to Harvey's funeral. R.I.P., buddy, much love to you.
Letterman obviously kept having Harvey back because the conflict was good for ratings. This is the thanks he gives Harvey for helping him harvest some eyeballs for his advertisers - he calls a champion of the everyman a "dork." Eloquently put, Dave.
"2010 was the second year in a row that GE recorded billions in profits and paid no taxes. " from abcnews.go.com . RIP Harvey and dave.. well dave can can go straight to hell . he was never funny .
Harvey Pekar, the voice of Ohio, the voice of middle America... how could he be silenced? His influence will last well beyond sell-out Letterman's... A true working class visionary, up against it in this video.
I've never heard of this guy and don't know the story here. I guess blacklisting really does work sometimes! Welcome back to the YouTube limelight, Mr. Pekar, whoever you are!
Previous to this interview Letterman used Pekar as punching bag for jokes... as a response, Pekar wouldn't let him talk... then in an act of comedic desperation, Dave show his true colors as a bullying douche. Fuck Letterman.
@sdtech100 I like how Dave's stance at the end of Harv's run as a guest on the show was "this is not the forum" over&over. I'd almost wager they brought him back on because of his last appearance so they could publicly bury and ridicule him. But oh wait a minute Dave went off on Bill O'Reilly about the "wars"and "terrorism" because its ok to ridicule whats fake and controlled to begin with. Harv was trying to find the the words and fight off shill Letterman but his message was sound and true.
The reason these 2 jibed so well on the show was that they were both great writers/ idea gurus and they could argue their sides. Secretly Letterman did have respect for Pekar or he would not have had him on the show so many times. Pekar did have the right to jab Letterman back since Letterman cut him down so much. They are both great in their respective arenas. It's just that Pekar was anti-establishment/underground. Letterman was prime time. Pekar is a legend. I hate yuppies too.:)
i don't understand why you'd hate letterman, he dealt with it the way he had to,he showed he could give an argument but the show really wasn't the place.
Was just watching the movie and saw the movie's version of this segment. Went and looked to see if the real was viewable. I was expecting more. The movie made Harvey's displeasure more understandable. This real clip, just made it sad.
"Your little Mickey Mouse magazine" was the reason Dave Letterman and company exploited Harvey Pekar for some cheap laughs. Harvey also exploited the situation. But in the end Harvey chose the better path to raise questions about the conflict of interest between news media obligations to the public and corporate interests.
I like Harvey Pekar and I remember seeing this when it first aired. Pekar is out of line. No one gets to go on Letterman or any other show of that format and go op-ed. Pekar insults Letterman by calling him a sell out and expects him to bad mouth the company that owns his network, what does he expect? He's in no position to demand answers from Letterman. If he really believes Letterman was a shill, why did he go on his show, other than to grandstand. What an embarrassing old fool.
@djruinerdotcom - The MULT- millionaire with the show is the talentless one and the comic writer who looks like "son of sam" is the talented one? Hmm? All this time, i had them confused.
Abbott & Costello fashion.... Letterman is a bit of a meglomaniac, he gets all excited because he didn't know how to handle the slightest jab at him which wasn't even really anything he was just asking a question as a normal person who doesn't care about celebrity, i understand its a late night show and every dialogue has to be a shitty contrived joke. i love comedy and don't know too much pekar. not the right place maybe but it wouldn't to snap some people out of their trance for a second.
No, Harvey did not "work" for GE... he was a guest on the Letterman show... and if you watch all and/or any of Letterman's interviews, it will become evident that Letterman, rather than respecting Harvey, was making fun of him. Letterman has no interest in art or beauty: he is a shallow, crass, rather rude individual, who thinks he is doing someone a favor, by "allowing" one on his program.
Dave Letterman is part of the establishment-- General Electric makes jet engines for military aircraft and triggers for nuclear bombs. Harvey is against the establishment and refused to bend over for the plutocrats. That is the difference between the two.
@jeffzekas They both gladly got paid by General Electric for their time on the network. How is one more "against the establishment" than the other, if they both do that.
My problem is Dave always goes into things he shouldn't talk about with guests. Look how he introduced Madonna and even when he made McCain say he screwed up while still in the presidential race. Then when he gets the same treatment he has a fit and belittles his guest. But I guess that's what you do when the TV show is in your name.
Harvey's annoying. I barely know anything about who he is or what he's done, but it's apparent to me that he's annoying and... well, kind of a douche himself. Sure, Dave's mean, but this guy brought it upon himself.
Dave was playing the role of straight man but I think he got genuinely upset when Harvey started going into an area where maybe he shouldn't have (that and he wouldn't shut up, lol.)
I actually missed all his appearances when I was an avid viewer, but Dave has to maintain the show's flow, he always wants control of his space when he's working. So in a way it's rude, but it's also turning into the VIEW when you think about it! haha
@MetallicBill yeah but the proper way to maintain control isnt to berate the guest with smug insults every time he makes a comment, no class. you dont make fun of your guests to make them laugh, you make them laugh through dialogue, thats why hes so much less popular than the other guys. he always seems to jump to insulting the guest when backed into a corner.
@ebottle2000 I agree, it's not good what is shown here, you have a guest on, they should stay away from touchy subjects, at least everyone being equally cordial
@ebottle2000 Seriously, being insulting has always been Letterman's shtick, and it's the MAIN reason his talk show has been popular all these years. And if being Leno, a trite, bland humorless bore means greater success and popularity, then I'm glad Dave is missing those particular achievements.
although i do disagree with letterman for going out of line with calling harvey's comics "mickey mousey", it's basically harvey himself who is causing trouble cuz he's getting the chance of a lifetime to show his work to a national audience and instead he uses it as a forum to lash out on the establishment which i can understand in some ways but in general won't really solve anything since he has to go through the establishment itself to get his work out there.....
@TMAT09 Whatever your opinion may be of him as a human being, let's try and have a little respect please. After all, the man has passed and I doubt his loving and devoted wife would take kindly to your words.
Be great if he actually got to say anything about GE and how it is the corporate arm of the military. Too bad he was not able to talk about how evil this company is and its major control over American MEdia.
"You never planned anything in your life Harvey!" Letterman is an idiot. The rich host picking on Peckar's wardrobe? Dave you are so much better dressed than the rest of us who have no value.
I have to agree with Ldale11. Harvey was being rude, interrupting the host, insulting the host. If it's cool for him to do that then it's cool for Dave to respond. Dave had no obligation to let him go on like that. Dave took a difficult situation and tried to bring levity to it but also seriously told Pekar where to get off. Bravo to Letterman.
"Harvey, you never planned anything in your life....(We've given you a chance) to promote your little Mickey Mouse magazine here...." David Letterman was, is, and forever will be an asshole. Harvey never planned anything in his life?!? He self-published and wrote a groundbreaking comic book for 17 years, all at his own expense while he kept down a not-so lucrative day job. The Monday after this show was taped, Harvey had to go to work. Letterman went to the 21 club.
@Beck19781 And Letterman had a great time at the 21 club and went on to bang multiple, young, hot interns on his show and made hundred of millions of dollars while doing it and he's still on the air. And Harvey Pekar died dirt poor even though he lucked out having a ver good movie made about his life called American Splendor based on his comics. Harvey acted like a nutcase in this clip and just looked like a balding fool.
@Satchel334 Well, Letterman and his crew certainly made a concerted effort to depict Pekar this way. It seems an unfair and inaccurate reflection of the man if you ask me.
@Beck19781 There was more to Harvey than this clip, sure, but he was just acting dumb here. Sure, it is kind of funny by he just blew a good thing by screwing up his relationship with Letterman over something Dave had nothing to do with.
@Satchel334 I disagree. He didn't "blow" anything. And Dave had everything to "do with it." Dave set the parameters. He drew Harvey's character before Harvey even had a chance to (both literally and figuratively). Its interesting that you phrased it in the way you did, because Letterman actually said to Pekar during the cut to commercial that (Harvey) "blew a good thing".
@Beck19781 Pekar sabotaged himself...Letterman gave him multiple chances time after time on the show. I wish Pekar had been tossed earlier. Rude blowhard.
@KellyGreen5555 I don't understand you people. Letterman invited Pekar on his show, and then complained when the guy was just being himself. Personally, I think Letterman liked the animosity. I think he secretly realized that this would provide good ratings, even if it made him uncomfortable personally. IPekar isn't rude. He objected to being treated like a clown, which is all that Letterman really wanted to do. So, Pekar looks like the bad guy just because he decided to not play the game.
@Beck19781 The last straw for Letterman (regarding Pekar) is when Pekar insulted the audience. It was not this show, but another. Letterman will not suffer it...I don't blame him.
@Beck19781 I used to dig Harvey and was very suprised at his behavior here and on the previous appearance. Harvey was invited to be on a show-- doesn't give him the license to be a jerk.
@Satchel334 Harvey looked like a working class hero who stuck up for the rights of writers and artists by simply asking why David Letterman, as an entertainer, sided with the executives instead of the talent. I think Dave looked like a jerk by calling Pekar's comic a dog and pony magazine, when in he has lauded Pekar's "Ameican Splendor" in previous shows.
@Beck19781 yeah the not-so lucrative day job is evidence for the lack of planning dave was refering to. You think it takes more planning to get a day job than become one of the most successful talk show hosts in the business?
Letterman wanted to provide a good experience for American viewers and Harvey was clearly making that impossible. Once in awhile, you just gotta show the little boys where they belong.
@bookguy12000 If you've gotta build from the ground up the way Harvey did then, yes, I would say it takes more planning. Even a cursory reading of Pekar's work reveals him to be a very complex person. Letterman treated him like a clown, and he objected to it. He simply wanted to represent himself on his own terms. I find no fault with that.
@Beck19781 Wonderful. Still doesn't excuse someone from being a rude and confrontational person when the host was merely asking him general questions.
If Harvey didn't want that, he shouldn't have come on the show. If he planned this, then good for him. No reason to make it seem like Letterman should have just allowed him to speak over him and argue about anything. Whether his claims are true or not is irrelevant. It's not about anything other than general manners.
harvey mentioned specifically in his writings that he didn't want to deal with people who would judge him for superficial things, such as his clothes, in which he takes a sort of pride in not making a huge deal about. letterman here exemplifies all of the qualities that harvey is against.
You've just witnessed one of the all time great expressions of personal conscience. I'm so glad Harvey Pekar documented his life - rarely have we gotten such a scathingly honest look into someone's psyche. The beauty part is that even though Harvey wanted to talk to all of us, but he didn't give a flying fuck whether any of us liked him or not.
This incident was just another example of the congenital truth telling that characterized Harvey's entire existence, and I thank him for it.
Letterman is such a dick, if youv'e ever watch his show all he does is insult his guests, god knows why anyone even goes on his show. he's a self important cock who thinks hes a god because he has an unfunny shit talk show
I hate Letterman but Harvey put him in an awkward position. GE is evil we know this, Cap and Trade ring a bell? But, Harvey was messing with Dave's bread and butter. Dave was in an uncomfortable situation. If he chimed in about GE he could've very well have lost his job. I think Harvey is entertaining too and I like him. But, he shouldn't have put Letterman in that postition
@Borgescope haha, letterman is far from a corporate douchebag.. He made jokes about GE all the time. He could do it, he was the host. He never went to NBC parties and was not very lojal at all.
It was not appropriate though for a guest, who obvioulsy had something to promote to go on air lieing about David, ofc he'd get annoyed.
@leppardsnake that just shows what i think why most tv show just sucks its that there are no real people on screen(like harvey).
all they need is another one hit wonder to promote his new shit, and have this incredibly shallow conversations about their carrier.nothing substantial going on in there
@leppardsnake that just shows what i think why most tv show just sucks its that there are no real people on screen(like harvey).
all they need is another one hit wonder to promote his new shit, and have this incredibly shallow conversations about their carrier.nothing substantial going on in there
Harvey asked for it, yeah Letterman's a douche, but Pekar should have known better, he got burned here, badly, it could easily have been avoided. The saddest thing about this is that Letterman was once a fan, look at his first appearance on the show, he gave Pekar a lot of respect, there's only so much abuse he's going to tolerate before going off on the guy.
Rest in peace and thanks for being yourself Harvey. Letterman was being a dick, as usual. He invited Harvey on the show knowing full well that he was a controversial figure, and then proceeds to make him into a goof. If you ask me, Letterman was the goof.
RIP Harvey. Harvey was a real person. Letterman's greatest moments are his awkward interviews. Andy Kaufman and Harvey Pekar started it. Crispin Glover, Harmony Korine, And Joaquin Phoenix have kept it going. But Harvey was the most honest of them all.

I actually missed all his appearances when I was an avid viewer, but Dave has to maintain the show's flow, he always wants control of his space when he's working. So in a way it's rude, but it's also turning into the VIEW when you think about it! haha
MetallicBill 1 year ago
@MetallicBill yeah but the proper way to maintain control isnt to berate the guest with smug insults every time he makes a comment, no class. you dont make fun of your guests to make them laugh, you make them laugh through dialogue, thats why hes so much less popular than the other guys. he always seems to jump to insulting the guest when backed into a corner.
ebottle2000 1 year ago
@ebottle2000 I agree, it's not good what is shown here, you have a guest on, they should stay away from touchy subjects, at least everyone being equally cordial
MetallicBill 1 year ago
@ebottle2000 Seriously, being insulting has always been Letterman's shtick, and it's the MAIN reason his talk show has been popular all these years. And if being Leno, a trite, bland humorless bore means greater success and popularity, then I'm glad Dave is missing those particular achievements.

if this was not planned than Harvey was a schitzo idiot and who cares
melly918 1 year ago
I think this was planned. He was not a douche, they rehearsed this. One dominant male against another
melly918 1 year ago
although i do disagree with letterman for going out of line with calling harvey's comics "mickey mousey", it's basically harvey himself who is causing trouble cuz he's getting the chance of a lifetime to show his work to a national audience and instead he uses it as a forum to lash out on the establishment which i can understand in some ways but in general won't really solve anything since he has to go through the establishment itself to get his work out there.....

"You never planned anything in your life Harvey!" Letterman is an idiot. The rich host picking on Peckar's wardrobe? Dave you are so much better dressed than the rest of us who have no value.
AVGP40 1 year ago
I have to agree with Ldale11. Harvey was being rude, interrupting the host, insulting the host. If it's cool for him to do that then it's cool for Dave to respond. Dave had no obligation to let him go on like that. Dave took a difficult situation and tried to bring levity to it but also seriously told Pekar where to get off. Bravo to Letterman.
rondimi 1 year ago
The only episodes Letterman isn't a dick to his guest is usually when Jim Carrey gets on and just runs around for 20 minutes then it's comercial.
I saw him with the politician and i saw Paris Hilton (who i dislike anyway).
But he is really being a Dickhead.
Filmzie 1 year ago
"Harvey, you never planned anything in your life....(We've given you a chance) to promote your little Mickey Mouse magazine here...." David Letterman was, is, and forever will be an asshole. Harvey never planned anything in his life?!? He self-published and wrote a groundbreaking comic book for 17 years, all at his own expense while he kept down a not-so lucrative day job. The Monday after this show was taped, Harvey had to go to work. Letterman went to the 21 club.
Beck19781 1 year ago 17
@Beck19781 And Letterman had a great time at the 21 club and went on to bang multiple, young, hot interns on his show and made hundred of millions of dollars while doing it and he's still on the air. And Harvey Pekar died dirt poor even though he lucked out having a ver good movie made about his life called American Splendor based on his comics. Harvey acted like a nutcase in this clip and just looked like a balding fool.
Satchel334 1 year ago 2
@Satchel334 Well, Letterman and his crew certainly made a concerted effort to depict Pekar this way. It seems an unfair and inaccurate reflection of the man if you ask me.
Beck19781 1 year ago
@Beck19781 There was more to Harvey than this clip, sure, but he was just acting dumb here. Sure, it is kind of funny by he just blew a good thing by screwing up his relationship with Letterman over something Dave had nothing to do with.
Satchel334 1 year ago
@Satchel334 I disagree. He didn't "blow" anything. And Dave had everything to "do with it." Dave set the parameters. He drew Harvey's character before Harvey even had a chance to (both literally and figuratively). Its interesting that you phrased it in the way you did, because Letterman actually said to Pekar during the cut to commercial that (Harvey) "blew a good thing".
Beck19781 1 year ago
@Beck19781 Pekar sabotaged himself...Letterman gave him multiple chances time after time on the show. I wish Pekar had been tossed earlier. Rude blowhard.
KellyGreen5555 11 months ago
@KellyGreen5555 I don't understand you people. Letterman invited Pekar on his show, and then complained when the guy was just being himself. Personally, I think Letterman liked the animosity. I think he secretly realized that this would provide good ratings, even if it made him uncomfortable personally. IPekar isn't rude. He objected to being treated like a clown, which is all that Letterman really wanted to do. So, Pekar looks like the bad guy just because he decided to not play the game.
Beck19781 11 months ago
@Beck19781 The last straw for Letterman (regarding Pekar) is when Pekar insulted the audience. It was not this show, but another. Letterman will not suffer it...I don't blame him.
KellyGreen5555 11 months ago 2
@Beck19781 I used to dig Harvey and was very suprised at his behavior here and on the previous appearance. Harvey was invited to be on a show-- doesn't give him the license to be a jerk.
sk8ites 11 months ago
@Satchel334 Harvey looked like a working class hero who stuck up for the rights of writers and artists by simply asking why David Letterman, as an entertainer, sided with the executives instead of the talent. I think Dave looked like a jerk by calling Pekar's comic a dog and pony magazine, when in he has lauded Pekar's "Ameican Splendor" in previous shows.
EliCashFly 1 year ago 3
@Beck19781 yeah the not-so lucrative day job is evidence for the lack of planning dave was refering to. You think it takes more planning to get a day job than become one of the most successful talk show hosts in the business?
Letterman wanted to provide a good experience for American viewers and Harvey was clearly making that impossible. Once in awhile, you just gotta show the little boys where they belong.
bookguy12000 1 year ago
@bookguy12000 If you've gotta build from the ground up the way Harvey did then, yes, I would say it takes more planning. Even a cursory reading of Pekar's work reveals him to be a very complex person. Letterman treated him like a clown, and he objected to it. He simply wanted to represent himself on his own terms. I find no fault with that.
Beck19781 1 year ago

RIP Harvey. Harvey was a real person. Letterman's greatest moments are his awkward interviews. Andy Kaufman and Harvey Pekar started it. Crispin Glover, Harmony Korine, And Joaquin Phoenix have kept it going. But Harvey was the most honest of them all.
