  • My favorite guitar teacher! Long May You Run Nils!

  • Saw him on Friday in Bradford. Gets better each time I see him.... if that's possible. The best acoustic guitar player in my humble opinion. Great show as always. Seeing him again in Sheffield on Thursday. And still might go to York too. Worth every penny.

  • Is he joking when he says "intermediate"? Kind of bragging without bragging? That was pretty darn awesome.

  • When he goes into the long instrumental it sounds like 2 guitars. His progressions sound like classical music. This man is a guitar god among men.

  • I wish I could play this

  • i can play this but nowhere near as good as nils

  • Electric American Creol, at its best !

  • Intermediate?!?!!

  • @hardmebite I have wondered many times how this can be intermediate. It seems advanced to me.

  • @hardmebite Even the hardest pieces of music would be intermediate For Nils.

  • hes actually my friends uncle, and i ve met and talked to him a handful of times. hes a pretty cool guy

  • @zeppelinkid200 i've met him aswell! one of the most modest guys in the world!

  • To be fair mate'mm

  • Incredible, crystal clear, acoustic virtuosity is displayed, continuing to unfold, building beautifully into harmonic bell-tones. Outstanding!

  • Watching this makes me happy that I no longer pretend to play guitar. What we do naturaly we do without effort. Nils and the guitar are one being.

  • This man ... takes a just a few moments to completely skin my own self ..leavin bones and shit and what not in the wake of his genius... I cry moon tears.

  • one of the best guitar playing i've heard LUV IT!! please tell me/us if there is a complete tabulature for this song. I found one tab for it but it's not the whole thing and lot's of stuff missing in it so please tell if you know any tab somewhere with the whole song. Really wanna learn it =D if no tab then maybe download the lesson for 20 dollars or something but i guess that would be worth it ;)

  • 5:26 IT'S GOD THAT PLAYS

  • You all should hear this on audiophile CD - "DALI Stereo Demonstration CD ".... amazing...

  • Feeling proud to be a relative to this phenomenon... Amazing! =)

  • seen him twice. once with springsteen at roundhay park leeds 1985 (70000 people?) then at newark palace theatre uk(maybe 500 people)

my jaw dropped the second time

    fuck this man is good

  • @alsmed I've seen him twice aswell, only preforming once though. First I saw him with Springsteen, and the other time on the streets of Manhattan actually, after Ringo Starrs 70th Birthday consert, I shouted "Nils, you rock!" and he turned back towards me and shouted "Thanks man!".

This guy is truly an amazing musician

  • @MatteSweden heh...great story...as a guitar player for 30 years...this is an intermediate lesson?....sorry....I'm not even fucking close....I actually got to see him play with his brother Tom in Wilkes Barre PA....and partied with his band afterwards....he is an amazing guitar player....and the most underrated of all time..but I don't think he cares?

  • the middle part of this

    Nils

    makes time stand still

  • @dawnvoid heh...awesome statement dawnvoid...it's true

  • @dawnvoid Then, why does the middle part end?

  • a stunning example

you could practice a 100 years

    staring this video down

    piece by piece

    and never come close

    a

  • @woodecurry I'd rather learn the Chinese language....at least they would say "you shitty guitarist....and your Chinese suckee..."

  • @woodecurry 1000 YEARS!

  • @woodecurry you are 100% right, this music is awesome, and a great audiophile test.

  • @monkeyguitarist does he explain well? :)

  • @qwerrik

Oh, yes. Chords, fingers placements, frets and strings numbers explicited.

Solo also is in the program. : )

Just need practice like crazy and you can play this. Great lesson.

  • @monkeyguitarist :), I was thinking of buyin some lessons :). Do you have them on mp3 or somethin or have to watch from the site after buyin them?

  • @qwerrik

Just buy them on his website, then you can download teaching videos.

All is writen on his website man.

  • @monkeyguitarist merci :)

  • @qwerrik wot? you recon he don't deserve to be paid?

  • anyone knows any often used scales in lofgrens playin??

  • 'eh close enough for rock n roll' <3 you Nils

  • What a Mint Tune, I llove it <3

  • Niels Lofgrenn can you remake "keith don,t go" acoustic?

I' am looking for It but I don't find

  • @krellcusio you can find it in his album "Acoustic Live", it's an high quality album (.flac)

  • Alright Nils ?

  • very moving, has Keith ever responded to it, in print or personally to Nils?...according to his autobiography just out he did take the advice, and has been off the heroin for 30 years now...

  • Nils played this in gateshead on the 25th Oct and was even better live. Awesome.

  • i think its more to advance playing.

  • @jdmarcus59 ya think? lol he's a pisser..intermediate my ass

  • Had this playing full blast in the car as I arrived in Monaghan for the Blues Festival in 2007 -(The Festival had been dead and buried for six long years and it was the rise of the Phoenix for me!)

The song has a very special place in my heart, as a result, quite apart from the fact that it's just so brilliant.

Saw Nils perform it live in Belfast a year or so later -- awesome!

Someone shouted from the back-- "Who needs Bruce Springteen?"-- Nils responded-- "The E-Street band!"

  • The wonderful Nils will be in the UK touring shortly, I'm going to see him again at he Sage, Gateshead, looking forward to it so much!

  • A maestro

  • "It's tuned to four four" - what kinda tuning is that?

  • I´ve heard so many acoustic versions of this song over the years and each one truly is a gift to mankind. Nils makes this world a better place!

  • Amazing! I lost my "in concert" version of this, so thank you for YouTube!

  • that guitar sounds amazing

  • God

  • one of my favourite song for the time, but I also like Black book alot

  • amazing

  • Intimate moments and lessons with guitar virtuoso Nils Lofgren

  • @6.47

he's just like " This isn't so hard, I'll just put my guitar right first"

    LOL

  • sorta intermediate until the 3:50 mark :) that said i likely couldn't play the first bit either

  • Absolutely brilliant!

My new favourite acoustic player; why haven't I heard of him before?!

  • @HoodedSword He's had quite the career first playing w/ Neil Young and then fronting his own band, Grin. Been a member of Springsteen's E Street Band since 1984. Check out his solo at the end of the song Youngstown from Springsteen Live in NYC

  • @mapender Cool, thanks :)

  • Buy it download it and learn it from Nils San..

Terrific tune,,, stun your all friends into silence..

  • ''alright, so that's the tune...''

  • this is acoustic guitar at its best !! "nils legend"

  • Comment removed

  • Humbling...

  • Intermediate????? right Nils ill be back in 50 years when i have it sussed!

  • Somehow, I have copied that 'close enough for rock 'n roll' whenever I can't get my guitar tuned...

Damn good performance, I love how none of them are 100% the same but it's still undeniable the same song. If I EVER get to Nils' level of handling my guitar, I'll be one goddamn happy person ;)

  • I know the world is crazy when Miley Cirus last single (I did not knew who she was until a friend with bad music taste told me to check her) has more than 98 000 000 views and this TREMENDOUS-WONDEFUL-ATOMIC-BOMB performance has less than 200 000 views after 4 years. LOL, WHATEVER ??? NILS FOR EVER !

  • @pigasusteinbeck i agree bubblegum pop music is shit.

  • What a phenominal guitar player !

  • hi mate i have just listened to the live album and i think its really good

  • Excellent. :)

Everyone should aspire to this standard.

    Love it..

  • Nils is remarkable as an artist and musician! My 7 year old son listens to him every day now!

  • @SpinDoctorSpin

I've been a fan since 1971. The double lead guitar on See What Love Can Do (Grin, 1971) is something The Allman Brothers could only aspire to. And I used to drive my parents to distraction playing Nils' piano riffs on Neil Young's "Southern Man".

  • love Lofgren! always have, Lofgren moves theory into ART ,AND THATS THE POINT OF IT ALL . he communicates right where it matters.

  • very well done!

  • You didn't learn that playin on the TRANS Album. Wholly Shit. I may never touch my Guitar again. After seeing that, what's the point.

  • God Almighty this recording is splendid in every sense of the word. How can Nils get any better? The answer to that question is IMPOSSIBLE!!!

  • Tell me ONE guitarist who can play it like Nils, only one.

Ah, ah ... Nobody. But tell Nils to play like SRV, Steve Vai or Clapton, sure he can get very close.

Then we should wonder why we pay so much attention to these previous guys so called "Gods" of guitar.

  • nils is one of the most important figures in rock n roll. From 75-89

he changed rock music, few people have followed his lead , a complete spiritual path like a shaolin monk! -piano , guitar, singing and totally into the body, gymnastcs, kung fu etc not to mention the writing, oh the writing !completley unique music continuing the tradion of the stones but with the classical training theres simply 'more' in it , in terms of substance.!

  • Man, that was comic genius. A 7 and a a half minute long epic song that you have pretty much no hope of learning from watching this, and 'so that's the basic tune...' at the end. I love dry humour.

  • Thanks, It's great. I really enjoy this...

  • Close enough for Rock n Roll. About time someone gets it.

  • the E street band blows away crazyhorse any time any day and by the way crazyhorse is a damn good band

  • He really kicks ass on the guitar, I'm willing to go out on a limb and say he's the best when it comes to guitar in the Estreet Band even better then the Boss! That wasn't easy for me to say but its true Nils is just great.

  • intermediate? you smug bastard...

  • not a great songwriter ? should have stayed in crazyhorse?cant agree, perhaps not the lyricist that neil young or bruce springsteen is, but he is a deeper musical talent than the two of them put together .

no offence but the best of nils is mightily impressive in a way springsteen or neil young cant match.

as an aside i think nils is a totally different kettle of fish to springsteen and young ,just because he's played for them dosnt make the music similer.

  • yup i have to i agree. i've been listening alot to the live acoustic album i have.... and it have blown me away in a wonderfull direction. :)

  • @90byork right ,man

  • What tune is playing with? dont really undestand that 4/40 or whatever he says :b

  • I think he just means standard open tuning E,A,D,G,B,E

  • @AlexVitus 440 refers to tuning - A-440 - means A is 440 Hz tone ... search A440 on Wiki for more information ...

  • That doesn't suck

  • He plays great but sings even better... gotta love "the Nils"!

  • Ive been into Brooce (and Nils ) for along time now. And yeah I think Pre Born in the USA was his best but hes done some excellent stuff since. I dont like that he has to play at being Bruce but alot of his fans like the same old sets and stories. But he has always had a change of style from his early Steel Mill days and I rate Nebraska up with his best.

As for Nils, what more can you say, listen to the geezer, Hes the bolocks!!!

  • one guitarist to another, does anybody know what kind of effects he is using?

  • When Nils joined Bruce it was a great day for me! Bruce is one of my faves and so was Nils; although not well known. He is one of the most under-rated guitarists in R&R. Incidentally, Bruce's guitar playing has greatly improved since Nils joined. Of course, not up to Nils' level. By the way, you don't need to bash someone just to make your idol look better. Bruce didn't get so big because he was a bad songwriter. Let's be mature about this. Nils and Bruce, what a combo!

  • hmm i'm not sure if bruce's guitar playing really got better? i mean he was at his peak in 1978 in my opinion

  • I saw a couple of vids of him doing some pretty awesome solos, dated within the last 5 years or so. I suppose it's difficult to compare. Maybe you're right. He did most all the guitar work on Born to Run, if I'm not mistaken.

  • no you're wrong on that one. he joined bruce and the e street band in 1984 and born to run was released in 1975

  • Yup, Nils is a truly scandinavian; talented but lazy..

Choosed the safe way with Bruce. Reminds me of a plummer I know. Still playing in a lowkey scandinavian band, but he's one of the best slideguitarist I've ever heard, and I've heard most of them.

Nils, don't be completly "nils" (in norwegain aka insane), start a new band and... "free fallin'.. ."

  • i tend to agree nils is lazy.not in a bad way

but i just feel he's very talented all round ,some areas have improved while others have slipped..a potentially phenomenal musician ,and most importantly a great songwriter from 75-89

the last few 5 studio albums have not been good enough by the standards he set in those years IMO. the neil young/b springsteen thing is controversial.

  • @inomawthanu 'lazy' (which I also do not see as a put down)doesn't take into account how incredibly hard, & sometimes impossible, it is to push your way thru THE MULTIPLE BARRIERS to the upper tiers in the music INDUSTRY if they are not welcoming you as a pop hit maker , or the next big thing. With WONDERLAND Nils clearly gave them everything they needed to promote him as a fantastic solo artist & it didn't really happen. After that, it looks like they only saw him as Bruce's side man

  • Wow! I'm a Springsteen fan, and I've even though I love Nils in E Street Band concerts, I've only just thought to look for him on You Tube. I'm so stupid! He's wonderful!

  • sidensvans67,

who's comment were you replying on?

  • By God, that's good guitar! Great going!

  • Bruce can fill stadiums because he's got Nils fans too. :)

  • Very true.

  • what's the song about/context please?

    an excellent peice of music!!!!

just wondering what the lyrics are about...

  • Keith Richard's drug bust in Toronto, back in the Seventies.

He was telling " Keef " to give up drugs.

Nils wanted to join the Stones, Keef was his hero, as Nils is mine.

  • its about keith richards leaving the rolling stones

  • Keith Richards

  • What a massive talent. I have seen the E-Street Band many times. Bruce has always introduced him the same way, "The great Nils Lofgren." There is no other way to describe him.

  • nils is the best

  • I can't argue with you there.

I was very lucky to see and meet him in my theatre in Llandudno North Wales three years ago getting his autograph aswell.

A simply incredible concert but the lead guitarist a New Zealander who is part of the Peter Green Splinter group was just as mind blowing.

This month (Nov 2009) i'm going to see Joe Bonamassa.

Now i hear he is quite usefull but i would certainly love to see Nils once again.

  • Woah this is incredible! I'm clearly incredulous. That "intermediate stuff" comment was some smug bullshit, though.

  • I have some Martin Logan summits and they sound awfully good on this music. (the summits are speakers)

  • Excellent..

  • 3:45 cool!!!

i´m learning it from my guitar teacher, but that´s a bit other version...

  • Off the cuff and real. Keep rockin Nils.

  • just awesome, this is one of the greatest songs on acoustic guitar i have ever heard, the solo is so amazing original and beautifull, GREAT

    Nils don't go :-)

  • Nils is da man !!!

  • what ever happend to the bridge school fund concert video of him playing this?

    somebody get and upload it

  • nils your fucking badass!!! your a great guy and so is your wife. sorry you have that for a step son =]

  • "Kinda intermediate stuff.."

    Yeah Nils...

  • ATTN GUITAR PLAYERS!! What does Nils mean, it's tuned to 4/4?? (Four Four)

  • He means 440 hz i.e. standard tuning in concert pitch.

  • Just before he play Nils said "it's close enough for rock n'roll"

So he wanna say that his guitar is not really in tune, but that's ok for playing rock

  • Superb!!

Nils came out of the womb with an acoustic guitar in his hand!!

  • A very VERY talented man. Compliments Bruce's fantastic songs and lyrics wonderfully well but a great artist in his own right. Search out Nils' magnificent live solo at the end of the full E Street Band version of 'Youngstown'. I consider myself very privileged to have seen that live!! A true meeting of HUGE talents.

  • Gee thats got more soul than any thing I've ever heard from Preston Reed's playing. Thanks ripbang1 for uploading.

  • Nils is the best thing about Springsteen

  • I true musician!

  • Intermediate for Steve Vai, maybe.

  • who needs his boss?i don´t

  • Don't get me wrong I think Nils is brilliant, but I love his boss too :-)

  • out of this world

  • Thats really awasome an brilliabt i hear a cd of him every evening ;)

  • This is a right-away letter, I've got to mail it today

Straight to my main inspirer, says urgent from the USA

Its got this heart inside it, the postage is my soul

Contains msg 4m millions, says Keith don't go

10000 guitars wailin', but it ain't quite the sameYou've got a knack for sailin', and it's stamped with your own brand name

We's all sailors, as captain you must knowKeith don't go; Don't take my fun

    We miss our father

  • Brilliant! I wish I could play like that haha Would never stop playing my guitar

his album acoustic live 1997 is also a masterpiece!

  • the reason he can play like that is because he doesnt ! stop playing his guitar ha ha.

  • Incredible!

  • heh....lesson 1...try to keep up kids...lol....
