I never thought the movie was completely about drugs. Drugs are a big part of it, but I thinker the bigger picture is how fast your life can crumble down around you when you hardly realize it's happening. It leaves you wondering how things got so horrible so quickly.

@DarkPepson thats exactly what its about. it tells the story of 4 people racing to get fixes for their addictions, and the resulting end of their constant downfall. powerful movie, and a must see for anyone

My grandmother had shock treatment, for her schizophrenia. That's when it was so widely used, in the 40's and 50's. They'd give patients this type of treatment for just about anything. This is a fantastic movie, and they don't seem to make enough movies that really cause you to "cringe". My ex couldn't even watch it, said it gave him severe anxiety lol. Phenomenal acting.
