I really do not think they want to equal Luke Kelly's version. They performed their own as a homage. It would be a nonsense if they tried to imitate Kelly's version. I think they took the right option. I prefer The Dubliners' version, but I really like this homage more than a bad imitation.

That's my long winded way of saying that comments saying this was not as good a version as Luke's are missing the point. I was 16 when I saw this on TV back when The Late Late was on Saturday nights and I used to hate that it clashed with Match of The Day but I didn't mind that night. I remember getting chills listening to it. It's not that it's a perfectly pitched vocal, he definitely missed quite a few notes and he actually sounded nervous faced with an audience of about 150, which might sound funny for a guy about to embark on a 12 month arena tour. Back in the fall of 1987 they played this at a concert in Buffalo, NY. Maybe because it was unknown to the crowd, you could have heard a pin drop in a place that held about 15, 000. It was amazing, the place was absolutely silent.
