think some people forget this was before U2 were the band they are now.yeah they were well known but not near the same they are now..back in the days U2 actually had good songs.i remember watching this live at the time i still think they did a really good job,ill never be a huge fan but credit where its due..
I really do not think they want to equal Luke Kelly's version. They performed their own as a homage. It would be a nonsense if they tried to imitate Kelly's version. I think they took the right option. I prefer The Dubliners' version, but I really like this homage more than a bad imitation.
Fair play Bono..you might well be full of it of times.. but I reckon Luke would have appreciated the intent and your rendering of the song... dont understand the previous comment ..so no comment.. Bono is not, however, even half a singer of Luke Kelly or Ronny Drew..not even a quarter....... OMG this was 25 yrs ago !!!
... (continued) But The Dubliners were huge, and Luke Kelly was a brilliant artist, so Bono knew he had no business even trying to fill those shoes, hence the nervousness. That's my long winded way of saying that comments saying this was not as good a version as Luke's are missing the point. It was a tribute to Luke, and I think if he was there he would have been thrilled and would have been the first on his feet to applaud. Thanks for posting this, it brought back some great memories.
I was 16 when I saw this on TV back when The Late Late was on Saturday nights and I used to hate that it clashed with Match of The Day but I didn't mind that night. I remember getting chills listening to it. It's not that it's a perfectly pitched vocal, he definitely missed quite a few notes and he actually sounded nervous faced with an audience of about 150, which might sound funny for a guy about to embark on a 12 month arena tour. But The Dubliners were huge, and Luke Kelly was a brilliant a
U2 do their best, they could not, and never will beat the Luke Kelly version of this song. Even now that Bono thinks he's God, he still will never sing it like Luke.
My parents bought this on Video (Still have the tape!), and I remember being about 4/5 years old watching this and actually being scared of Bono. Don't ask me why lol
Back in the fall of 1987 they played this at a concert in Buffalo, NY. Maybe because it was unknown to the crowd, you could have heard a pin drop in a place that held about 15, 000. It was amazing, the place was absolutely silent.
Luke was a great singer, but Bono doea a great job here too. Hey I was born proud to be Irish. There's only one thing worse than being Irish, and that's ' Not ' being Irish.
u2 are something very special. 4 a band 2 be so good 4 so long it takes a lot of talent and hard work. makes me proud 2 be irish, keep flyin the flag 4 ireland boys.
Watched this on the late late show dubliners tribute yesterday.... Thought it was good enough to watch again. Milford06 and poolpig you guys watch too much South Park.

Infantile. Compared to Luke Kelly or Ewan McCall (who wrote it) this performance is just overwrought nonsense.
niallmac44 2 years ago
No one's going to measure up to Luke Kelly. But why compare them anyway?
One of the great things about Irish singers is their own passionate characteristic singing styles.
If you don't like Bono that's fine, but there's no reason to disrespect him.
F3YR3 2 years ago 3
Its not about liking or disliking Bono (mostly I like his singing0 its about this performance. Totally out of character.

This song was written by Peggy Seeger, with assistance from MacColl.
