I'd say that legged design is not effective. Its complicatet and delicate, and for more tracked (or sometimes even wheeled) chassis give similar mobility plus greater speed.
They need to make a real Tachikoma it would actualy work for military but they wouldnt be able to take to many hits unless the military some how makes force fields in the next few years lol
Just putting this out there; If I had Tachi's in combat, I'd deploy them in tight situations that require a small-arm, versatile vehicle since they're better at talking to humans and reconnaissance than packing on the fire power xD... ya' know what I mean?
A real tachikoma would be EXTREMELY hard to maintain.
With military equipment, every single moving object, joint, cog and pretty much 90% of the piece of equipment must be in top condition.
Not only this, but many unforeseen obstacles lurk when developing advanced mechanical equipment, such as limits in control software, ammunition storage, the joins would have to be sturdy enough to actually withstand the weight of the vehicle.
@reptilionsarehere ....you have no idea how the military or it's hardware works, nor do you understand energy and the concept of the "force field". This is obviously some poorly thought out weeaboo fantasy of yours.
@LighthammerStudios Didnt say they were or are just saying they should and i made it perfectly clear that force fields arent going to be invented anytime soon....
@magistorikus lol, though have you heard of the Robot that is "self-aware". Not self-consciousness, but self aware as in it's aware of it's body and it's constituent parts. Unlike it's brethren, if it breaks a leg it's not entirely incapacitated, it simply thinks of a new way to move and move accordingly. the guys who came up with it are Hod Lipson and Victor Zykov of Cornell University. so 10-20 years seems to be an accurate estimation.
@Shatteredworld ill' be 75 so hopefully a little before that...or if I can afford it I can just go total prosthetic when I am 75. =o] I think a 21 year old body which doesn't age could be rather cool =o]
@reptilionsarehere they were never really able to take many hits in the cartoon anyways. They got destroyed by practically everything. But they were really smart and could dodge most things. That's why they were called "think[ing] tanks" in the end of GITS:SAC season 1.
sucks they had to die.

Although the design is fun to entertain, in the end its not effective. A jet or a plain tank could take one out in a single shot.

And they don't actually have a use.

@reptilionsarehere do you know anything about robots and artificial intelligence?
it will be a very long time before we have anything like a tachikoma, and even longer before we develop shield tech
right now, our AIs are maybe as smart as mice....doubtful
and our robots, hell we cant even get one that can walk on its own without our support, let alone speed down a high way or up a building
it will be another 10-20 years before we have anything remotly similiar to a tachikoma
