I think they were coming here to save us from ourselves. The earth was being destroyed by mans actions then they show up and give everyone everlasting life the alien rain brought forests back to where they were before. The child represents an unbiased perspective on life and he reacts with joy/elation cause he see them as pure goodness despite their unfamiliarity. The adults are afraid because life as they know it is ending and they react badly to the aliens.
