People who have trouble with the combo-box - It is greyed out for any version of windows that is Windows-vista or later (For some reason windows doesn't allow anyone to record music that is being played on their computer anymore)

@MissRock1996 If you're using windows vista or W7: Go into your control panel , open up "SOUND". Click on the RECORDING Tab. Now usually you'll only have one, maybe 2 things in this list, heres what you do: Right click anywhere in the white area of this list, a sub menu appears:Click on "Show Disabled Devices". Now the list allows you to select "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix". You must select the disabled "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix" and right click on it to select "Enable". That's it.

how come when i record a clean part and then want to lay a distorted solo over it. the signal cuts out. the clean part souns fine but the distorted part sounds like shit. is it audacity or my crappy lap top microphone.

then right click stereo mix, then click use as default. then u can begin recording

Just gonna add that if you don't have option to make it default, then just disable the current one you are using, and stereo mix will automatically become default.

I figured out how. If you have Windows XP then go into Edit/Preferences... and change the Recording Device to Back Line in/Mic, Front Line in. And then also change the Playback Device to Microsoft sound mapper. i'm not sure if its called that since I have a french computer :P.

For those of you using Vista whose box is greyed out, here's what I did to get it to work. Go to the folder where you have Audacity installed, right click on the audacity.exe file, go to the Compatibility tab, check the box that says "Run this program in compatibilty mode for:" and select Windows XP SP2.
