What's interesting is how many American directors have been influenced by Malick but refuse to acknowledge it. I think his insight into nature--human and otherwise--is acute to the point of intimidating colleagues. If you look at the actors who tried to get on board with The Thin Red Line, you get a sense of how much respect this guy commands. He's the real article. I don't care who else knows it. I know it. And that's enough.
@mulkurul85 you think you have a monopoly on knowing it? Well you shouldn't have blabbed your big mouth cos now I know it and I'm gonna tell everyone.
@FREAKSmoviereviews The version of this 16th century song in True Romance was heavily modified by Hans Zimmer. But as that film is essentially a homage to Badlands, they're supposed to sound the same.
@waddyprocess Actually, True Romance and Natural Born Killers are two pieces of a very long script Tarantino wrote pre-Reservoir Dogs. True Romance is very faithful to the original material, while Natural Born Killers was heavily modified by Oliver Stone. So Tarantino didn't actually write Natural Born Killers; he simply has a "story by" credit in that film.
A young, innocent Love Story; in untouched nature, beautiful music of a classical composer, wonderful pictures; Nostalgia; a girl like Snow White and a boy with beautiful hair; fighting their hostile enviroment; Modern Adam and Eve in Paradise. Maybe an allusion to America ?
Besides all this, that masterpiece also shows us, how manipulation can work. Thank you, Mr. Malick.
In real live Kit would have killed her the first time, she would have bored him.
I am glad that someone recognized the thematic , representative "moment" of this movie. It's this very sequence that stays with you forever after seeing this movie.
@LondonPride25 yes, this is certaily one of the greats......to you does this stack up to "To kill a mockingbird", "In Cold Blood" or "In the Heat of the Night"......i think it does......by the way if you have not seen the afore mentioned films you have to see them....they are a must for those that love American Films
I saw this for the first time last night. There is something mysteriously entrancing about this film and I think this scene encapsulates that feeling very well for a moment.

@SachinStyle I think Natural Born Killers, which was written by Tarantino, was very influenced by Badlands, too.

Yeah, True Romance referenced this. It's called an "homage."

@willerror or a rip-off.
Semantics.

Yeah, the True Romance composers ripped this movie. I don't mind though. Tis a great movie.
