That's an interesting question. I always ask myself, which company might have created the "inflight maps". And there are lots of different names for them: inflight map, flight map, air show,... So which one is correct? Every airline uses a different term. Does anybody know exactly?
Yes, the wind was blowing us to Hong Kong with 198 km/h... The pilot caught a good gust of wind... However the true airspeed is still around 900 km/h, whitch the speed of sound is compared to! So no matter how fast the Boeing 747 is flying on the ground speed, it will never exeed the speed of sound!
The cruising speed of a B747 is about 918 km/h, although I used a A340 to Hong Kong (Pacific way). I got a nasty Head Wind of around 130 km/h+. Somehow I still arrived on time, but the Ground Speed was around 810 km/h.
The pilots are, as far as I know, able to variate the crusing speed in case of head- or tailwind! On the way back to London we had around 200 km/h headwind, and the flight took around 12 hours and 40 minutes! At this flight the plane arrived 90 minutes ahead of time, due to the strong tailwind, I saw it once at around 255 km/h! And the airline was Cathay pPacific!
Sorry if I may be disturbing you too much. The flight I took was CX 0829 from YYZ to ANC to HKG (Chek Lap Kok). It took a total of 10½+6½ hours. However, CX 0826 from Hong Kong direct to Toronto only took 14:23, but it was a disappointment to find no Ground Speed and Head/ Tail Wind display on the way back.
Yearh no tailwind sucks, specially when there was headwind on the way out! It's like riding a bike in headwind and then on the way back no wind is to be found... OMG 14.23 is looong time to be on a flight... Find it hard myself to cope with a 10 hours flight... Btw on the way back from Hong Kong i counted like 7 or 8 planes within a period of 2-3 hours going to London... That's a hell lot of pax...
To answer your question on who makes the maps, it's Rockwell Collins.

1,096 km/h? That was a whopping fast speed. You are about 139 km/h short of the speed of sound.
