@903harman i agree about the first thing you said, anyway the space elevator has remained only a theory, due to the fact that there is no such material (yet) that is capable of undergo an enormous amount of weight, and being elastic aswell. In my opinion we will begin to see some projects (if they agree to do researches about it) in 20 years at least. NASA is quite busy at the moment with Mars exploration
