Good basic info! Not for the dude stranded at sea but maybe the guy stranded at home after an earth quake or some other act of nature where our water system is contaminated or not functioning. You could use a wood fire if gas was not available. My only concern is at higher temps in a pressure cooker other chemicals may be evaporating off and into your water. Although heavy metals and salts will be left behind! And this will kill any bacteria or parasites.
If your on an island making a sun still would be a lot smarter, and likely possible, where your idea, is likely not possible and a stupid plan for survival. Are you fucking surviving as a rich man in the city? Or a dude who is ship wrecked some where... because if your best friend is a soccer ball, then you need to know how to make a sun still not a stainless steal pipe dream that you don't have the tools or materials to make.
@kushasaures i think you're the one with pipe dreams kushtard. between 1990 and 2008 close to 2 percent of Denali National Park visitors required search and rescue operations. This video is not about island survival or shipwrecks or rich men that live in cities.
I have a set up like your pressure cooker stainless steel coil and the water is coming through, but when I measure the ppm it is showing 111 ppm and my sink water is 112. I also put a filter on the end of the coil where the water is coming through it was giving me a reading of 28. what am I doing wrong? Distilled water should measure 00 correct. please help if you have any idea on what I am doing wrong.
The restriction of the outlet means the boiling point is higher then 100deg, so you're getting steam + whatever else is in there with a boiling point above 100deg. A reflux column allows for fine control where these just pump out anything that will boil at whatever temp the pressurised container is forced up to.
@tippo747 its the same here in kuwait, we dont have a drinkable water source and all we have is the sea, our tap water is distilled water and is drinkable, + tap water is really really cheap like RAELLY cheap
Even though distilled water doesn't have minerals, it is still OK to drink. Plus, you don't need to get your minerals from water. You get them from food. Do you know you would have to drink 650 cups of water just to reach the daily requirement for calcium? It is perfectly fine to drink distilled water and I've been doing so for years. I actually recommend it. it's the cleanest water there is.
@allayna82 - there may be some terminology confusion. distilled as in 'boiled it and recollected steam without salts etc condensed back into water' should be safe to use but it's not nearly as healthy as natural fresh water. ideally you'd want to energise it in some way after distilling it, to try to revive it's structure and vitality.
@Tagard1995 Heavy water is still H2O. H2O2 is peroxide. There are multiple 'heavy water' compositions, but they are all H2O. Isotopes differ in weight b/c of neutron count. The isotopes of H and O can be somewhat lighter or significantly heavier.
'Heavy water' is found in every glass of water, but only in tiny amounts. This sort of distillation won't meaningfully select for it. In practice any particulate can be or collect radioactive material, so distillation should decrease rad exposure.
I learned that in boyscouts, we always said, Well if your stranded on an island and if all that is around is sea water good luck on finding a pot to boil water with :D
ya but the thing is the water will evaporate leaving only the solid behind. you need cools and a something cool to jacket the water vapor as it condenses again
I prefer the Dig a hole, use a tarp like material and put it over the whole w/ a cup in the middle of the bottom of the whole. Use rocks to secure the tarp into place, then place a rock in the middle of the tarp, over the cup at the bottom of the whole. Now dig about 10 of these holes (More if you can) and then every morning collect the moisture (Dew) droppings that have collected in your cup. Purified Water... W/ no worries anymore.. Thats the Natural way.
It would be easier to find a pot to boil in than ten tarps & all that work.
It would be better to just tie a clear plastic bag on a plant or tree branch. When the water condenses to the bottom corner of the bag tear off the corner & drink. Then tie a knot to seal the hole & return later for more. Just untie & drink. Plastic is better than dead.
Good vid for distilling though. I think I will use a canning jar pressure cooker & paint the outside black so I can use it in my solar oven. Thanks.
in the diagram at 0:44, I dont understand the part where it says "condenser", maybe you can add some words or other pictures to explain that part

lol only problem in the wild is: where the fuck are you getting the ice from to condense the gas into liquid again?
im sure you'll find an ice maker in the middle of no where.

I don't like these pressure cooker setups.

A very simple way to use seawater
leercoach 11 months ago
You can blow salt water in the rectum with a tube.
The colons function is onlo to absorb water.
This thechnique is rarely mentioned.
It is often used to hydrate patients in Africa.

most life rafts come with a solar still i wouldnt reccomend getting stranded at sea just to use it though lol

@tippo747 - yeah you can distill it and also you get salt to use too, or do the reverse osmosis thing.

yup..."Smart Water" is just distilled water and they charge a ton for it :)

@allayna82 reckon one could add a pinch of Himalayan Salt (supposed to have 82 minerals in it) to a gallon of distilled water.

i just read drinking distilled water for more than a few days is bad for you because it has no salt of minerals that you need to
absorb water so now i'm trying to search how to put that back in the distilled water good vid !
plasticspine 2 years ago
MIx it with weak Gatorade mix, that's what we do, to replace the electrolytes and minerals removed by distillation.
Distilled water is like "heavy water" or water in nuke plants after it has been used for power generation.
pshinspections 2 years ago
@pshinspections heavy water is actually h2o2 not h2o oxygen is heavier than hydrogen therefore it makes it heavier than h2o

@007ninja365 you can increase heavy water percentage byusing electrolysis. the heavy water will not separate.
jamesrgodfrey 1 year ago
@pshinspections Not exactly. Heavy water has been distilled a LOT more times. That is why it costs around $300 a gallon.
