  • Good vid as always Mike, got a question for you. In my local woods there is a few large (12mx12m) pools, the water looks stagnent, I mean you can see some surface scum, not a lot just a thin layer, but ten meters to the left there is a tiny stream that goes on a while. Now could I filter that water through my millbank bag, boil it or purify it then drink it? Is stagnent okay basically?

  • never touch stagnant water mate, always use free flowing water. there are far too many bad things in stagnant water to prevent getting to you and making you ill. there are serious consequences to drinking unsafe water.

    mike

  • @wall2rockclimber Okay cheers Mike.

  • this is such a classic

some are using a Filter quality bag from brewer supply store and get true filter grade bags made to size you would like and be .1 or .2 micron filter. I would only put the ouside in the water source and scoop out of the clean inside for real hygenic water.

  • where can I get a millbank bag

  • try ebay mate, seems to have good prices

  • Hi mike. Thanks for the video.

I noticed that you used your crusader cup to top up the millbank with unfiltered water and to boil the filtered water. Is there an issue there? Could some harmful material stay on the cup and be ingested do you think? Or doesn't it matter that much.

    Cheers

  • thats the best comment i have had, well done!!

yes there could be a problem, the fact is that i sterilised the cup by putting it on the flames, then boiled the filtered water, so this is fine, but as you said people need to be aware of this!!

    thanks again

    mike

  • @wall2rockclimber so you used a separate mug to add water to the filter bag. Or does the mug and water all sterillie when on the cooker

  • @ilikebeertoo i put the metal cup over the flame first then fill it with water and boil it, as the outside may have contaminants on it.

  • No need to boil, once over 80c the bugs are dead but you can bring to a boil to make sure the whole pot is at 80c or more.

  • Great video on one of the most important elements of our skills/knowledge base.. There is no other way to ruin a trip quicker than to come down with something nasty when taking a simple drink!! Excellent stuff

    5 stars as usual

  • Great videos, thank you for your efforts.

    Greetings from Morocco.

  • PLEASE NOTE

3.And in the event of All Out Nuclear War Your better off dead,

    PLEASE no more silly comments

AND WE QUOTE 99.999% Because even i know of THERMOPHILE lifeforms.

  • tsaudiovisual: Good point m8. In the event of a nuclear war were all buggered either way as the water systems would all be contaminated. Ive heard so many different ways of how to boil water properly. So 3 mins boiling is the best way?

  • 3 mins will be ideal at sea level, and with every 1000 ft you climb add 1 min as a rough guide line, even with basic filtration eg a T shirt this method has worked for me since 1981, be safe and dont take chances.

  • nice ,,, 5/5

  • "more bubbles less troubles"

I'll have to remember that from now on.

    -thanks

  • Many Thanks.

  • the more bubbles less troubles is a myth. you only need to bring the water to a rolling boil. This is especially important in the desert where you dont want to boil your water off.

  • This is not a myth, its a saying used by the military so they remember to boil water enough to do the job, we left the lid off for the video, so you can see the water boiling, we would have a lid on and let it boil for no less than 3 mins.
