The Champs greatest race this one in my honest opinion had speedy dogs against him in Lisa King (ok mind of her own) and Jet Circle St Leger winner If i could take one sporting memory with me to my grave this would be it, absolute privilege to see this greyhound run
Unequivocally the greatest greyhound of all time... Anyone who argues otherwise is kidding themselves. I doubt there'll ever be another like him.. Super, super greyhound.
if i get to see another like him in my lifetime i will die a very happy man THATS HOW SPECIAL HE WAS and i am only 39 i have been wating since 1985 for another scurlogue champ to be born into the sport but it has NEVER happened !
scurlogue champ had a heart of a lion i saw him close up he was a truly handsome greyhound different from others and he knew it. Dukes trackcraft was brilliant and his racing style took your breath away, he was different in every way. People say there will never be another like him but its been a long time. Lets hope another scurlogue comes along it would be great for greyhound racing R.I.P. DUKE
i'm glad i lived to see such a great dog. I know nothing about greyhound racing but I know a "star" who made people happy when I see one. Even the people who backed against him wanted him to win. He still puts a smile on my face, pity there are no more like him.
Truely THE BEST this sport has ever seen. I saw him live once in the Sporting Life Marathon at Romford and the quality of dog he beat from a mile back was amazing. Watching these vids makes my eyes water. What a performer
This is the second Video i have seen of the Champ and i'm dumbfounded. How he won from that far behind is beyond me. Could someone please tell me if they think the Champ or Bob would have beaten the Hawk, i havn't looked up times and all that, would just like a personnal opinion.
The Hawk would probably beat Bob over four bends, Bob would probably beat the Hawk over six and Scurlogue would beat them both over eight bends but struggle over the shorter distances.
OK Clarkeben, it would have been interesting to see the Hawk over a longer trip though. I myself would have liked him to have taken on the fantasic Roxholme Girl in the TV Trophy, how do you think that might have gone? I have seen Cash For Kate come from along way behind to win, but have you seen anything come from as far off the pace the Champ?
Hawk wouldn't have got eight bends on a motorbike, he has too much speed for that. I would say that his limit would be around 640m and he could have been unbeatable at that distance. As it was he was pretty unbeatable over 480 but no way would he have got eight bends. No dog in the history of racing has come from as far off the pace as Scurlogue Champ and although Westmead Hawk has been compared to Scurlogue Champ with his last to first style he would have led in this race.
I think this was a race during Ballyregans record run of 32 consecutive victories betweeh 1985-86,in a way a far superior dog to Scurlogue but the champs exploits stick longer in the memory.
The race your refering to was a 4 dog race at wembley but was basically a match between Ballyregan Bob & Scurlogue the race was shown live on the bbc at teatime, BOB won & i think the Champ was tailed off & may not have even finished the race.
I seem to remember a showdown event between Bob and the Champ, with just two other dogs involved (a four-dog race), in which the Champ left it so late and dropped so far back that he lost interest and stopped? Is my memory playing tricks on me? Can anyone furnish me with any details? Or, better still, does anyone have a clip to upload?
Yes remember it well, pretty sure it was at Wembley, the race was live on the bbc there were four dogs in the race but it was basically a match between Ballyregan Bob & Scurlogue champ, this was to turn out to be a major dissapointment as Scurlogue never got into the race, though i cant remember if it finished tailed off or just stopped during the race.
You should contact Pat Peckham.I think she is still alive. Her husband was the trainer.Duke as he was called by the Peckhams was not bet on.They were paid a fee just to let him run.He was called the "peoples champion".He was a freak. There will never be one like him.
I remember him well, pretty weird, seemed to know when to make his run, i know of at least 2 races when he got tailed off so far he lost interest and stopped, the Ballyregan Bob race springs to mind, although Ballyregan Bob's trainer would'nt take on the Champ at his favoured distance, the Champ is certainly the best/most exciting dog i've ever seen.
theres probably a few veiwers out there that do not realise how good this dog was , as it was about 20 years ago . he was the best dog in the country over 6/8 bends and always came from a mile off the pace , the roars as he starts 2 motor down the back straight sends tingles all over me . any greyhound fan from 20 years+ ago will never forget the name scurlogue champ . simply the best !! , thanks again ben .
That dog was unbelievable, almost as if he knew when to hold back and then go for it on the back straight. I don't know how many times I've seen that clip and it still gives me goosebumps! A legend.
Wow what a dodgepot.Swear to god he did it deliberately, superb entertainment though.Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.Supernatural ability, weird!.
Extraordinary race.

Absolutely the greatest greyhound evr to race, ballyreagan bob and mick the miller were top class, Scurlogue champ was out of this world!!!

Agreed, but Westmead Hawk is up there too

Scurlogue champ and Bob were arguably the two greatest dogs ever. They didn't have to run in classics, they even invented races for them.

the champ did'nt lose interest he ran lame
kendray1 4 years ago
You're wrong. Scurlogue pulled out lame at the second bend but wasn't beaten by Bob.I also believe that Bob lost his first four races.
