I love this movie, it's a classic. I saw this for the first time when I was 9, and fell in love with it now (16) I watched this every chance I get on tv
One of my FAVORITE parts of the movie........I used to sing this song with them, and pretend I was there with Christopher Plummer........LOLOL! He's still a very handsome man...........
Since it was just Rodgers, no Hammerstein, they seem to have 'undersold' this one in the film itself. No need for that -- it's still one of the high points of TSOM, and was definitely included in the most recent stage version of the play in my hometown...
@dawngoth20 well, actually, if the historians are right - Hammerstein lived until 1960 and "Something Good" was commissioned for the film version only, in 1965 - and so done by Rodgers alone. It is often cited as an example of Rodgers' singular talent and lack of need for a collaborator (although I feel that 'Something Good' could have been 'Something even better' with a little help from Oscar H.)
00:36 may be one of the greatest moments in all of the history of film making. When you can take a moment that everyone knows is coming and using lighting, and shadow and timing and an incredible edit to create a moment of drama that will live forever; that is art. " You can't marry someone.....(huge dramatic pause, spin and cut top close-up) ...when your in love with someone else." I wonder if they realized at that moment what they had just created?
@Junimondi Perhaps I can explan it though it's only what I think: this was a extremly hard scene to do (they did over 30 times) because they were tired (one of the last scene they did), a bit out of focus because they had to talk and sing so close to each other, and because the thing to make to moonlight made weird noises. Well, all this gave them the giggle. Julie said it was so hard to look in Chris eyes suriously with the ridiculous noise that would happen at any moment.
"The Sound of Music" followed me around my military service in the 1960s including a year in RVN. This song always brings tears to my eyes. By the way, Christopher Plummer just accepted me as a "Friend" on Facebook this morning! :)
My friend and I love Sound of Music so much, particularly the Austrian maid Frau Schmidt, that we made a parody of the musical told from Frau's perspective. It's a comedy that we both wrote. If you're interested in seeing it yourself, youtube "Sound of Frau" and click on the version with the best quality! :D
In the original Broadway version of 'The Sound of Music" (1959), Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel sang "An Ordinary Couple" to demonstrate their love for each other. When the movie was being planned, Richard Rodgers decided it sounded too "operatic" for Julie and Christopher {his singing voice was actually dubbed by Bill Lee} to sing, and wrote this one instead. In recent years, "Something Good" has often replaced "An Ordinary Couple" in amateur and Off-Broadway revivals of the musical.
I was very lucky. Our local store had the Sound of Music DVD on special. Fortunately DVDs are very hard to wear out. I have watched it in access of 100 times. It is a most beautiful musical.
I just love that movie and that scene... ♥ ♥ ♥ They were so confused in this scene, and then finally realize they love each other... ♥ ♥ ♥ The sound of music 4ever...
I have the album (yes, the big black round thing), but the album version (used here) is nowhere near as beautiful as the film version. I actually went so far as to create an audio file of the film to include on my mp3 player. Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever and one of the most beautiful moments of the screen.
Wow, I've seriously listened to this about 4 times now, and I don't wanna stop yet. lol I love this song, so so much....This musical is just one of the greatest.
@leginewol The way they look at each other is love defined. My favorite scene from my favorite movie...and yes, I am all man.
My only wish is that someone post the whole scene. The best part is when he explains he can't marry someone when he's in love with another. Crushes me every time I see it! I am all about that scene...
When I saw the movie as a kid in the 60's and on TV afterwards I never paid any attention to this song. But how our tastes change over the years. Now it's my favorite song in the movie.
Oh my gosh! :O Ohh! I was looking EVERYWHERE on YouTube for this one song.. the original version from Sound Of Music...-sigh- you have truly made my day!! Thank you sooooooooo very much for putting this up! its AMAZING! <3 C:
I sang this song n a solo competition back in 1995. :-)
