"Do I Scare You?" wasn't Billy last recording, it was recorded in 1994, before most of the stuff on Transmission Impossible. His last recording was "Pain in Any Language" with Apollo 440, recorded in November 1996.
this is a beautiful song, and Billy sings it nicely, but if you want the version which is guaranteed to break your heart, listen to the version by Nina Simone.
HI Cinemar, if you have everything of the fab Billy maybe you can help me if you dont mind. I heard a ballad with Billy and Sinead O conner about garden roses or bury the roses. Does that ring any bells with you. Im trying to track this down but cannot find anything and driving me nuts. Billy forever!!!! thank for your time anyway even if you cannot assist.
Hmmm no sorry sjors that doesn't ring a bell at all. Billy wasn't really known for doing duets with anyone. Are you sure you've got the right info on this? Apart from working with Appollo 440 and Yello I'm not aware of any other artists he appeared on the same song with at the same time? The word Roses doesn't conjure up any songs I've heard of his either. Sorry I couldn't be of any help :)
Have never come across a Sinead O Connor duet, though I can imagine that working really well. He did record a song called "Do I Scare You?" with Siobhan Fahey/Shakespear's Sister, which I understand to be the last recording he ever made. It appears on Shakespear's Sister's Best Of. The only other duet I'm aware of is "The Best Of You" with Eddi Reader (originally recorded with Annie Lennox).
Thank you so much for uploading this song. Wish a record company would release a rarities CD/DVD!
@cinemar Okay here is an incomplete list of other bands and artists Billy MacKenzie recorded and releaseed records with... Strange News, British Electric Foundation, The Skids, Orbidoig, Stephen Emmer, Uno, Holger Hiller, Yello, Audiopeach, Loom, Gina X, Barry Adamson, Apollo 440, Paul Haig, Steve Aungle and Shakespeare's Sister.. Billy's entire career was built on his collaborations with other artists and the evolving line up of his band of Associates. Go look! You'll love what you find!
@Lanarker Thanks for that. Much appreciated. Im still hunting the song about the roses that I heard on student radio in NZ. Frustrating as it was unreckonisable Billy's voice......
Cut Here is about Robert Smiths last ever meeting with Billy, hence the lines like "to much rush to talk to Billy" and Roberts feeling of guilt for not going for a drink as Billy died a few weeks later.
Thats also why he used an annagram of The Cure as the title of the song as a homage to Billy
Rest in peace "The voice of velvet"
You've brought much, much joy to many and I thank you
i agree the song is so moving by robert smith. I read an article a few years ago in which he spoke about billy and how much he loved billy as a friend also how lifes trivia got in the way and how he wished he had spent more time with him. Billy was and still is one of my heroes love him ..
i love the song by the cure which is about billy it is a song of regret for not being there for billy before he took his life the song is called (cut here)
Indeed. I'd never before thought that an overweight man with badly applied lipstick could make me cry, but the tears were streaming down my face when I first watched the video for that song. It's a beautiful, moving tribute.
I offer this prayer (spiritual mind treatment) for Billy.I pray Billy rest in peace. Nam myoho Renge Kyo! We are so blessed. Love is eternal. And so it is. Lisa in KCMO:
this is undoubtedly a touching tribute to the genius of mackenzie's vocal talent(which should never be underestimated). but, at the same time, i am unsure whether his true accumen is portrayed without the influence of alan rankine. this is a lovely cover but billy mac was brought to life by mr. rankine- no?
Actually, no - in my humble opinion. Billy, as well as being a superlative singer, was a crimininally underrated song writer in his own right. Many of my favorite songs of his were entirely self penned by him.
Much as I admire Alan, Billy oozed talent aplenty, without his assistance.
Listen to "Just Can't Say Goodbye", "Empires of the Heart", and "In Windows All", e.g., for proof of this.
Do not fool yourself that Billy was merely " a voice" - that is so untrue!
was released as part of a limited edition 4 track ep on ROL records I think..
pretty rare but occasional see them on ebay

Thanks for posting this, Billy really does justice to the song here, truly sublime vocal as usual.
Anyone know if the recording is available anywhere?

Billy had a great foil in alan rankine but his almost supernatural voice transcended any lack of a close musical collaborater.

I haven't heard this version before. I have a different version sung by Billy. The vocal is probably the same one, but the backing differs.
Both are absolutely beautiful. If only Billy knew how much he is still loved.

I've always loved this song, and Billy gave it an ethereal feel that I never imagined before. Beautiful, simply beautiful.
