  • Rule 14 fail.

  • OOOF LOL

  • ah - racers = stupid

  • The guy on the right had preference. The guy on the left is wrong. What a colision, poor nice yachts.

  • Now....its Miller time

  • .. Failboat

  • what about "port tack boat keep clear"????

  • wtf they had plenty of time to change course

  • The starboard tack boat is mine... But I wasn't on board! The insurance company of teh other vessel coughed up... Wish we'd had this footage when making the claim!!! Thanks for the footage!

  • I called the Royal Western Yacht club to see if anybody wanted the video but they never got back to me.

    Glad every body was O.K.

  • Just like "Andrea Doria" and "Stockholm" back in the 50's, but with snailboats...

  • ok now do your 360s guys..and head to westmarine for new gelcoat...

  • 720's ;-]

  • So much for starboard tack boat having rights

  • Actually Starboard boats don't have the right, its a myth.

  • They do when the other is on a port tack or in the case when the other boat is also on a starboard tack .. in that case, the windward boat is burdened and the leeward boat is the stand - on vessel

  • You answered your own point, there is no right of way, just stand on which is totally different.

  • Look at rule 10..you might be a bit surprised

"When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat."

  • That's called 'stand on' not right of way. If the port boat doesn't give way the starboard must and if you have the opportunity to but don't the insurance company won't pay out. You simply can't ram a port boat when you could have avoid and say afterwards 'starboard' as if justifies it. Both boats are obliged to avoid a crash.

An example is the port boat may have problems so be unable to tack. The starboard boat is obliged to avoid a crash if able to do so if the port boat doesn't.

  • These boats are racing, so Racing Rules of sailing apply. Rule 10

"When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of

    a starboard-tack boat."

And the preface to this section says,

"A boat has right of way when another boat is required to keep clear

    of her"

    Rule 14

"A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if reasonably possible. However, a right-of-way boat need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other boat is not keeping clear"

  • Only a Pom would say "brilliant" as a crash is about to happen. Twat.

  • Americans would yell 'yee haw' and high 5 everyone.

I agree the commentator is a twat though.

  • Oh come one, anyone would be pleased to catch something like that on film. The only twatiness is the silly repeating of the crash in the video.

  • I was filming from the R.F.A. ship. I hope all your crew are o.k.

  • Yes thank you!

  • My dad owns Waterjet and i do bow. This was the main sheet guys fail. We were all flat out with just the helm watching the luff leaving the main sheet man to watch for boats!

The boat that hit us has hit many boats before and doesnt no any rules of sailing. He should of missed us and asked for redress!!!

  • That's so sad...

  • Whoa! Thought for sure the third boat was due for a hit as well.

  • That was like a slow motion dream. Oww!

  • "I got it on film" ....Hope the boat owners get to see this too.

  • Two boats really in the wrong, but especially in the center... should have dropped back evasively, but if it weren't there the other port boat would have been on a collision course too... Moreover, starboard was in the right to stand-on, but really should have made a last minute maneuver. Shame on all of them.... That's as long as your UK rules are the same as the US... or is it backward, like driving? ;)

  • Cheers for the comment Christopher.

One thing I do know that is backward is the iala buoyage system in the States . . it's the wrong way around to us!!

We have Iala A That is when you come into a port red is left and green on the right. This system is used Worldwide except in the Americas. When entering a port you guys have Green to port.

    Happy sailing,

    Barry.

  • nice yeah first view
