As a huge Priest and Rob fan, I always thought Rob sounded really bad on this one song. I'm not *huge* on the vocals here either but they're a lot more...fitting than Rob's here IMO, and they're pretty good as stands. xD
Why should it matter on the sexuality of a bands singer? When I started listening to Judas Priest, I didn't know that Rob was gay and when I found out he was it didn't change my view on the band or Rob at all.
Like the guy on the top comments said, just enjoy the great music. Although I must say, Halford is THE, one and only, metal God, and no one gets close. But yeah, stop arguing...>.>
This version is better than Judas Priest's. The vocal are clearer and more agressive, and the melody is actually distinguishable, unlike the Halford one, where it sounds as Halford is kinda out of tune(he is not). The heavier distortion and drums and let's face it, Barlow's vocals, just make this tune perfect. The best tune of the album, besides Black Sabbath and Number of the Beast.
@imperialwizard123 A lot of "poser" fans care about the image the same way pop music fans care about image. They don;t listen to metal because they like metal, a big part of the scene for them is the image................which is really gay in itself. I love metal, I don't really give a rats ass about these musicians personal lives.
I think Mr. Luciferion should go back and listen to Halford in his prime (Sad Wings or even British Steel) and realize why he is the Metal God. Of course 2010 Barlow > 2010 Halford. Halford's been singing Painkiller multiple times a year for 20 fucking years, tell me your voice would sound the same after that shit.
@DavidKinner He didn't sing it great at 40 in '91, But at about 50 in 2002 he was doing it perfectly. Look up Halford Painkiller live Disney House of Blues 2002.
@cubby3o5 I know what you mean, but I meant in the studio because to be honest other than Halford I really don't think anyone else could possibly sing painkiller perfect in a studio even. Chuck Shuldiner had his own version, but not the same.Maybe Eric Adams could that is about it though. I have not heard Barlow in his youth do anything as impressive as say Victim of Changes, although he is amazing too in his own way.
@MrLuciferion just so you know ive nvr heard someone call Tim Ripper Owens the god of metal and he was in judas priest so that just disproves your theory u fucking retard
Actually, I do like this singer for this song better. No offense but Halford's voice is just too high when he sings this one. It kind of hurts my ears...which is odd since I love the start of All Guns Blazing where I think he is even a higher pitch.
i see all these comments saying 'Halford is metal god' or 'Barlow is better than Halford'. come on, at least appreciate that we have lots of incredible metal vocalists and that a band which has one covers a song by a band who have another. stop all this hatred. metal isn't dead but all this fighting and arguing among us isn't really helping it that much
@borumir just listen rob halford live and listen to barlow...halford is called metal god because he somehow started metal if barlow was in judas priest then he would called metal god....so shut the fuck up...
@Querin1: I hear Halford fucking up and having a much raspier and damaged voice than he has in studio. Barlow's voice is much cleaner live than Halford's.
That was a fail at showing someone up.
Get over your fanboying. If Priest wasn't as recognized as they are, you wouldn't be spouting such nonsense.
I love Priest, don't get me wrong. But these are human beings, and none of them are infallible. The Classics are only better because they're classics, but not because they're actually better.
@CallingCrowe I don't know what you're talking about with Halford fucking up live, he sounded amazing, better in fact, than the studio versions when I saw him.
@xParasiticx: My main issue is that he doesn't hold notes for nearly as long as he should, and he has a habit of underpowering his vocals. Don't get me wrong, I love Judas Priest and Rob is the shit, but I just don't think his live performance is up to par compared to, say, Barlow or Khan.
@CallingCrowe Oh, at first I'm not a big priest fanboy, but I like Halford's voice more than Barlow. Its my opinion. Both are good singers but metal god is metal god.
Even Pavarotti has mentioned Halford is the world's best singer. That's Pavarotti's opinion, but I bet its great honor for Halford. So let's stop this stupid fightning ^^
I wonder how IE would sound if they had Ralf Scheppers from Primal Fear.
To me I like Judas Priest but love Primal Fear. Schep sounds more powerful in the recordings than Halford. Dont get me wrong Halford rules, but Scheppers sounds fucking awesome.
dude your comparing a cover to JUDAS PRIEST that doesnt seem all too fair seeing as Judas Priest is basicly another word for what you get when you take a group of gods and have them play music.
zmfire youre a dumbass, it takes quite a bit of talent to even play a song like this, even if you dont like it, you have no business trashing IE's homage to metal gods, so go fuck yourself
Really anyone who comes here to talk shit about Iced Earth can fuck off this really lives up to the original and what the fuck don't you idiot's get about"TRIBUTE TO THE GODS"duh dumb asses it's a tribute there not trying to be better than any of the band's there covering.
@ZMfire: Cover songs are (for the most part) done as a tribute to the original band, not to compete. Iced Earth was showing respect to JP (and yes, I am a fan of both bands). You obviously don't listen to IE, but the sound of this song sounds like IE, which is the entire point of a cover song; to make the song in your style.
Okay ZMfire they still did good job and IE was inspired by judas priest its a sign of respect its better then most people could ever dream of covering.
it would have been cool if Ripper Owens sung this song instead of Barlow since he was in Priest. i think this was the last album barlow did then ripper took his place
That was Tim the Ripper Owens, and he wasnt in IE for long, the main vocalist and the vocals in this song are by Matt Barlow. And he kicks anyones ass!! Awesome!!
I love Iced Earth, and this album is great, but Barlow's voice just can't match up to Halford's on this song. Especially in the beginning, from 0:05-0:09, it sounds out of place, almost as if he's bored.
its a covers album people. Loser band? matthew barlow may not be halford, but... uh he can still do the scream.. halford no longer can.. pay attention.. this band will bite u on the asses.. great band
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what the hell is this what a loser band they have to fill a whole album with other peoples song and get money for it cheap skates leave screaming for veneance to the metal gods judas priest!!!
I'm a huge Judas fan...only just started listening to some Iced Earth, let me just say i am VERY impressed with this cover version..... Like a good cover should should be.. Stay true to the original, but put enough of your own bands influence into it.... ACE ;-) I love it ;-)
The original is awesome, but I've got a thing for Iced Earth (love Schaffer's riffs and Barlow's voice) and I really like the downtuned, fat-distortion guitars they use on this version, so I'll give this one the edge. :)
wow. Iced Earth has taken a great song and made a pretty decent cover. It is unlike many "covers" where they are almost completely different (like Killswitch engayge's dio cover). They made a pretty accurate cover to what the original was, but added a kind of thrash sound to it. Good job, IE!
Personally I like it when bands cover the song in their own style regardless of the original. I mean that's why I'm hearing the cover, so I can compare the two. KSE's cover of Holy Diver may be controversial but in my minds it is actually better than the original (and yes I'm a huge Dio fan).
But on topic I like Iced Earth and I loved this album. Giving their due to the classic rock/metal bands they grew up on.
Iced Earth did a great job on this one. But Judas Priest did the original, which is better in comparison. Not to say this isn't good, because it still kicks ass. Just, Judas Priest kicks a little more ass. Still, great tribute
i like with these guys but i think that like halford no one will be halford rules he is the bes heavy metal singer he deserves all the respect of every one of ours thanks
Great cover indeed. I think that all of Iced Earth's members did a good job on it.
And, to all the guys saying that this version sucks, or who are putting "thumbs down" to the ones who like this cover... why are you even coming to watch this vid ?
BOTH versions kick some major ass. I do like the bass on this one better though.
And Ripper does have a range more suited for this, since he can hold out the shrieks so long. But Barlow has such intense growls, I wish he used them more.
I find it funny how whenever a video of a cover of a song is put onto youtube, the comments section breaks out into an original version vs. cover version argument...
oh shut the fuck up anyone who thinks this cover sucks its amazing really lives up to the original and besides WHAT THE FUCK DONT YOU IDIOTS GET "TRIBUTE TO THE GODS" duh dumbasses its a TRIBUTE their not trying to be better than any of the bands their covering LOSERS!!!
pretty decent cover (not best than the original IMO) ... i enjoyed matt barlow's vocals, is kinda refreshin to listen to the song with another version of the vocals...
It's a good cover, but doesn't come close to Priest. I'm sure this is more appealing to kids getting into heavy metal because of the sound of it. But it sounds uninspired and muddy.
Halford's vocal range is D2-G#6, which is phenomenally wide and rivalled only by Freddy Mercury. Bullshit to your other comment about Barlow being able to go lower, though Halford never actually sings as low as d2 on recordings that I have seen, that doesn't mean he can't, as shown in the above vocal range.
ive always loved iced earths covers, of all sogns they chose its not the most famous to cover which is kool i find the best covers are of well known bands least known songs
Better than the original my fucking ass, oh, to a 13 year old this sounds "heavier" or whatever I'm sure. The production is muddy and the vocals don't touch Halford's and never will.
Fucking bullshit. Judas Priest rapes Iced Earth up the ass repeatedly without lubrication. In the case of Rob Halford, this may actually be true, its hard to say. Nonetheless, the cover is perhaps ok, but shit in comparison, especially the vocals.
No offense but you know Barlow has a great voice. You can't even say the vocals suck. He actualyl can go lower than halford. He's not even a high singer. Sry Barlow owns, especially owns halford's ass now that he's old. So does the ripper, face it and stop crying. You're pissed cus you know Halford can be whiney just like James Labrie.
As a huge Priest and Rob fan, I always thought Rob sounded really bad on this one song. I'm not *huge* on the vocals here either but they're a lot more...fitting than Rob's here IMO, and they're pretty good as stands. xD

This is my fav version! no attempt to disrespect Judas, but i love Iced Earth :D
Lordofducks631 3 years ago 6
Great cover indeed. I think that all of Iced Earth's members did a good job on it.
And, to all the guys saying that this version sucks, or who are putting "thumbs down" to the ones who like this cover... why are you even coming to watch this vid ?

fucking awful.

BOTH versions kick some major ass. I do like the bass on this one better though.
And Ripper does have a range more suited for this, since he can hold out the shrieks so long. But Barlow has such intense growls, I wish he used them more.

Iced Earth is good.
But Halford & Priest are the Metal Gods.

I find it funny how whenever a video of a cover of a song is put onto youtube, the comments section breaks out into an original version vs. cover version argument...
CrimsonBlaziken 3 years ago 3
i think they actualy do this pretty well
letspaint 3 years ago 10
oh shut the fuck up anyone who thinks this cover sucks its amazing really lives up to the original and besides WHAT THE FUCK DONT YOU IDIOTS GET "TRIBUTE TO THE GODS" duh dumbasses its a TRIBUTE their not trying to be better than any of the bands their covering LOSERS!!!
xXEchoWolfXx 3 years ago 10
pretty decent cover (not best than the original IMO) ... i enjoyed matt barlow's vocals, is kinda refreshin to listen to the song with another version of the vocals...

It's a good cover, but doesn't come close to Priest. I'm sure this is more appealing to kids getting into heavy metal because of the sound of it. But it sounds uninspired and muddy.
kkdannysk 3 years ago
Oh give me a break. This cover sounds awesome. You can't say its "uninspired" and "muddy". They put a lot of work into this album.
Ninjamonkeys18 3 years ago 8
no offense dude, but I like Halford but Barlow has a better voice. It's all in taste. Personally barlow sings this song less whiney, but I like both.
undericesinger 3 years ago
Halford's vocal range is D2-G#6, which is phenomenally wide and rivalled only by Freddy Mercury. Bullshit to your other comment about Barlow being able to go lower, though Halford never actually sings as low as d2 on recordings that I have seen, that doesn't mean he can't, as shown in the above vocal range.

King Diamond's vocals range is way higher than halford's one
godofm60 3 years ago
no, but he is a close second
fireemblem555 3 years ago
and nobody's voice is "way" higher than halfords, the world record male is about 1 and a half octaves higher than halfords, and is not King Diamond
fireemblem555 3 years ago
halford has a more dynamic voice and much more power though.
nexusofthecrisis 3 years ago 6
Im not soo sure

in your fucking dream man barlow as so much power in his voice especially in live he is so awsome
Violator6996 3 years ago 3
Not now, not ever. Rob Halford is the metal god. :)

Ive been listening to metal for 20 years, and Ive been an iced earth fan for nearly that long, and i think this is a a damn good cover.
omgnomorebacon 3 years ago 2
man this good cover
ive always loved iced earths covers, of all sogns they chose its not the most famous to cover which is kool i find the best covers are of well known bands least known songs
gota love Eb tuning covers of standard stuff
mrsquiggles9 3 years ago
Fucking purists...
They aren't attempting to be better than Judas Priest or any other band that they have covered. What part of 'tribute' don't you people understand? >>
I, for one, think the cover is great. Lives up to the original.
deadpisser88 3 years ago 2
Better than the original my fucking ass, oh, to a 13 year old this sounds "heavier" or whatever I'm sure. The production is muddy and the vocals don't touch Halford's and never will.

great fuckin cover much beter than the original
shaynecob 3 years ago
Fucking bullshit. Judas Priest rapes Iced Earth up the ass repeatedly without lubrication. In the case of Rob Halford, this may actually be true, its hard to say. Nonetheless, the cover is perhaps ok, but shit in comparison, especially the vocals.
fireemblem555 3 years ago 3
I think this cover its beter than the original and halford just only know how to screa
Violator6996 3 years ago
No offense but you know Barlow has a great voice. You can't even say the vocals suck. He actualyl can go lower than halford. He's not even a high singer. Sry Barlow owns, especially owns halford's ass now that he's old. So does the ripper, face it and stop crying. You're pissed cus you know Halford can be whiney just like James Labrie.
undericesinger 3 years ago
It should be against the law to attempt to sing Judas Priest, The Gods of metal
SeymoreButts6t432 3 years ago
Mat Barlow is a fucking great singer. Only he could have pulled off a cover this good.
