Fantastic arrangement from a fantastic movie (Picnic) and this is the music from the scene where Kim Novak & William Holden dance together - sensuality and illicit romance at it's best.
Can any of you fans help me--I have a Morris Stoloff recording of the main theme from the film 'FANNY' the one starring leslie caron and Maurice Chevalier etc. from about 1960. It's on a 7'' 45 rpm. But I can't find it. and was hoping to hear it on Youtube. But Nothing on the entire web at all about this recording--any ideas ?
One of the best arrangements of all time--and unique that it combined two songs into one--genius!--and did it with verve, elan and romantic sensitivity. No wonder it was a hit--and perfectly captured the romance of the film.
I found that this scene had the most erotic statement. tI was sensual. The thought of William as a college buddy was hard to swallow but this scene embodied the point of no return for the couple and show the world what was really in their mind.
The Decca soundtrack LP album was a real breakthrough for Decca. Their pressings were of low quality of a long time. It was only the superior A&R folks at the label that made records sell. Hard to turn down a Bing Crosby record. Also Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock LP put Decca in the forefront.
Morris Stoloff made a brief appearance in the movie "Jolson Sings Again". the sequal to "The Jolson Story". he is seen directing the orchestra while Jolson is making a recording. he did a great job in both pictures with the music & i think this is great also
Love this song. We watched parts of the movie being made in Halsted & Hutchinson, Kansas. We lived in Newton & drove over. Saw the scene for this song & it wa shot on a creek in the park in Halsted. Never will forget that summer & have seen the movie about 11 times & still love it. TheBW1313
AH, how I love this song. William Holden and Kim Novak dance to this song in the movie PICNIC. It has to be the most romantic, sensual scene in cinema.
I don't think it would work today. The world has changed.
I remember when I heard this song for the first time. I was around 7 and me and Mom were in the kitchen making dinner. I knew Moonglow 'cause Pop used to play it on piano but Picnic was new. I remember thinking how cool it was that they strung two songs together like that. And, to this day, it never fails to move me. The sign of a good song and perhaps a good memory.
The original inspiration to use "Moonglow" came from Josh Logan's stage version of "Picnic," which originated before the movie. Quoting from Josh Logan's autobiography "Josh," he relates that Marshall Jamison came up with a version for student soloists with only rhythm and harmony, the melody left out. It was Stoloff & Duning that blended the "Picnic" love theme to it.
@Abbeysums THX , IT REMINDS ME OF ONE SPECIAL SUMMER WITH MY PARENTS AND OF MOM SPECIALLY ALSO, THIS IS ONE BEAURIFUL SONG AS WAS SHE ONE SPECIAL BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ,, MISS HER SOOO
Just so we have this straight... this selection contains two combined melodies. The jazz combo (with the piano) is playing "Moonglow", by Eddie DeLange, Irving Mills (publisher) and Will Hudson. Then the strings come in with the "Theme from Picnic" by George Duning. This recording is by the Columbia Pictures Orchestra, conducted by Morris Stoloff.
@wahoo76 Thanks for the information... I believe it's musical genius to combine two basically incompatible songs into one glorious and unforgettable smash hit.
Steve Allen set beautiful lyrics to Duning's music: On a picnic morning, without a warning, I looked at you and somehow I knew, On a day for singing, my heart went winging, A picnic grove was our rendezvous. You and I in the sunshine, We roamed the fields and farms, At the last light of evening, I held you in my arms! Now when days grow stormy And lonely for me, I just recall picnic time with you.
there sure are a lotta' comments.. if u happen to notice THIS ONE PA-LEASE send this song to me as a file or something! I'd right here give you an e-mail BUT I don't wanna get trolled forever & ever.. THANYOU FOR UPLOADING =]
I was six or seven when this movie came out. But I watched it first in the mid 1960's as a teenager. I have loved it and the music since then. I have always also remembered the guitar style. Watching Steve Allen and his jazz groups on the Tonight show also inspired me to learn music, first saxophone, then electric bass and guitar which I still continue with and teach part-time today. Who was the guitarist? Was that a Gibson ES-175 he was playing?
I don't know who played the piano for this song, but he takes all the other jazz pianists I have heard to school. He probably got a couple hours wages, a atta boy, and a couple beer bar gigs out of it. Seems old Morris wasn't throwing his name out there much. Maybe he did but I just didn't catch it.
It doesn't get any better than this. Although Kim Novak and William Holden were wonderful in the 'dance scene'. It's not them; it's the song! The arrangement is amazing.
Heard this song on the radio today but didn't know the name. Thank goodness the announcer gave the name and I'm enjoying this on you tube. Will continue to do so for a long while. Thanks to the creators for this timeless masterpiece.
This was a work of art, combining both songs for 'Picnic" I remember seeing the movie, but i think i was in Iceland and saw it at the theatre on base. Yes i do play piano, love all these great tunes, and played with bands between Iceland, Cape Cod . I just got this computer, never had You-Tube before, but son said "dad, you're in the 21's century" I'll go practice/play a few of these later on. I'm glad to see all those enjoying the great songs.
This is the best arrangement of the song "Moonglow" and one of my favorite pieces of music scored in film. Absolutely beautiful. Made me a fan of Morris Stoloff forever!!!
I LOVE THIS SON.... it reminds me of a time when all was good and it had the sexiest dance scene ever. I'm so nostalgic for these type of movies... Kim Novak and William Holden were so fabulous... what a special time in our history. I'm sad those "good old days" are gone forever. Lovely, lovely.....
When this film was made, in the '50s, they didn't have the camera technology that they have today so what you're suggesting doesn't seem doable to me. Even a guy, who can't dance, can manage the few steps that Holden did in this scene and we witness this sequence at weddings all the time.....K
I was 16 years old when this came out. At 16 everything was dreamy and impressionable. This has been my favorite for over 50 years. This song will live on forever.
OMG I love this song and I haven't heard it for over 40 years!!!! TenStarsplus !!!! I never got to see the movie becaus my whole family was sick with the flu when it was playing!!! I was 13 years old at the time in 1956 !!! Thank you so much for posting this !!!!!
The William Holden and Kim Novak dance scene, on the lake pier, was one of the best in movie history. Harrison Ford and the Amish girl tried to top it, in the dance scene in the barn loft in the movie Witness, but didn't quite beat Picnic.....K
William Holden couldn't dance, didn't know how. Only the camera and Novak actually moved. Great camera work to make audience think the two were dancing.
@POLLUXAKS4 God, but the look into each others eyes. The dance scene in picnic with this song playing in the background, the fire coming off the screen is probably the most erotic in the history of all American cinema!
In Bradley Beach there was a pavillon and on the weekends it was sort of a juke box Saturday night. I remeber watching my two cousins dancing with these two dummies from New York to this. They eventually married them and have been happily married ever since. Great song, great memories. Thanks for posting it.
Frankieheartsful, you wrote: "What's the chance of a tune of this ilk being successful today? Zilch."
And my reply... " There is no possibility of this quality of music returning, no more then there is an opportunity for us to recapture who we were back then either. Perhaps in the next life!"
@amalfi348 Kudos to YouTube for giving a forum to recall the great past. Nowadays it's zillions of clones of Star Bores music that's called sound track music. This analog record with its nicks scratches is far off galaxies ahead of the Star Bore clone-ish music.
This was the kind of popular instrumental music of the early and mid '50's. I was nine thru twelve and loved this. This one is my favorite, nothing can touch it. Then early rock and roll for white folks in summer 1955..... then March of 1956 Elvis exploded on mainstream radio..... But then we still had rhythm, melody, nice, innocent lyrics, if somewhat silly at times
I've never forgotten the dance scene from Picnic. That beautiful music and the obvious sexual tension between Bill Holden and Kim Novak made me feel warm all over!
I am in absolute heaven when I hear this song I can't get enough of it. I didn't hurt to have Bill Holden & Kim Novak who well paired in movie. I just wish I had soeone to dance with to that song
@EdGomide Waldo de los Rios didn't come to the United States till 1958. What did Morris Stoloff do, go to Brazil so Waldo could make the record? Get real.
