  • Oh, okay. What I meant was groove and SMOOTH :) Thanks to dukeuke1

  • Ooooooh, I so luv this... since I was a kid. What a beautiful blend of sounds. I didn't realize back then I loved the combination of jazz and.....

  • This was number one on the radio the week I was born back in the Spring of 1956. That year Elvis and Gogi Grant dominated the airwaves.

  • I have the CD soundtrack for this movie; this is the CBS orchestra....

  • Magical!!

  • I get goosebumps every time I see Kim Novak and William Holden dancing to this tune.

  • beautiful <3

  • SIZZLING Solid Grove Here & One of my Band`s FAV. TOON`s to do ! SOLID Grove & SMOOTH.

  • When I was about 8 years old I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle in Strawberry Hill

and when ever I went to the cinema they would allways play this in the interval.Great memories.Thank you texpaco for posting it

  • Fantastic arrangement from a fantastic movie (Picnic) and this is the music from the scene where Kim Novak & William Holden dance together - sensuality and illicit romance at it's best.

  • Longing for the good ol days!

  • It was actually number one for a week. This is truly amazing since Elvis had a number one song every week in 1956.

  • When the 'Picnic' theme comes in, I get goose-bumps. It was everything I hoped would happen. Romantic promise. . . .

  • Morris and the orchestra hit #2 in Billboard, 5-26-56. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week!

  • Can any of you fans help me--I have a Morris Stoloff recording of the main theme from the film 'FANNY' the one starring leslie caron and Maurice Chevalier etc. from about 1960. It's on a 7'' 45 rpm. But I can't find it. and was hoping to hear it on Youtube. But Nothing on the entire web at all about this recording--any ideas ?

  • Gosh this is music!!!!!!

  • One of the best arrangements of all time--and unique that it combined two songs into one--genius!--and did it with verve, elan and romantic sensitivity. No wonder it was a hit--and perfectly captured the romance of the film.

  • Every July 4th I think of this song and play it just to remind me of this scene and those violins in the middle.....goosebumps!!!!!!

  • I found that this scene had the most erotic statement. tI was sensual. The thought of William as a college buddy was hard to swallow but this scene embodied the point of no return for the couple and show the world what was really in their mind.

  • The Decca soundtrack LP album was a real breakthrough for Decca. Their pressings were of low quality of a long time. It was only the superior A&R folks at the label that made records sell. Hard to turn down a Bing Crosby record. Also Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock LP put Decca in the forefront.

  • Morris Stoloff made a brief appearance in the movie "Jolson Sings Again". the sequal to "The Jolson Story". he is seen directing the orchestra while Jolson is making a recording. he did a great job in both pictures with the music & i think this is great also

  • I love this tune - it always reminds me of the dance scene in the movie, which I also like a lot.

  • IT SAID SEX WITHOUT PUTTING IT IN YOUR FACE LIKE MOVIES DO NOW

  • AH, how I love this song. William Holden and Kim Novak dance to this song in the movie PICNIC. It has to be the most romantic, sensual scene in cinema.

I don't think it would work today. The world has changed.

  • What a wonderful music , those 5 dislikes are deaf , or are out of their mind poor people , que maravilla de musica

  • This piece of music is beautiful , 1 of my many favourites , thanks for posting .

  • LOVE THIS, so much!

  • Don't me why but I think the best NOTE out of the entire tune is at 1:34...Superb tune overall.

  • They don't do stuff like this anymore.......sob.

  • @Katie6512 Heaven help Hollywood if they try to remake this classic. Who would they cast today?

  • This music is beautiful and will be beautiful 50 more years. Anything played today will be around that long? I think not!

  • I remember when I heard this song for the first time. I was around 7 and me and Mom were in the kitchen making dinner. I knew Moonglow 'cause Pop used to play it on piano but Picnic was new. I remember thinking how cool it was that they strung two songs together like that. And, to this day, it never fails to move me. The sign of a good song and perhaps a good memory.

  • This was also played in the beginning of the movie Casino, with DeNiro and Pesce

  • George Cates also did an arrangement of Moonglow/Picnic during that same time and was well known for it....Cates is known for Lawrence Welk.

  • One of the 2-3 best non-vocals of all-time.

  • The original inspiration to use "Moonglow" came from Josh Logan's stage version of "Picnic," which originated before the movie. Quoting from Josh Logan's autobiography "Josh," he relates that Marshall Jamison came up with a version for student soloists with only rhythm and harmony, the melody left out. It was Stoloff & Duning that blended the "Picnic" love theme to it.

  • one of the best written and orchestrated , arranged an d written pieces of music ''ever'' written---- 'ever!'

  • This song reminds me of my mom. I never realized how beautiful and special it was until she was gone. Thanks for posting this.

  • @Abbeysums THX , IT REMINDS ME OF ONE SPECIAL SUMMER WITH MY PARENTS AND OF MOM SPECIALLY ALSO, THIS IS ONE BEAURIFUL SONG AS WAS SHE ONE SPECIAL BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ,, MISS HER SOOO

  • Splendido motivo che ho sempre amato!

    Grazie :o)

  • Oh, yeah......holden & novak's dance scene from the movie.....magic!

  • Just so we have this straight... this selection contains two combined melodies. The jazz combo (with the piano) is playing "Moonglow", by Eddie DeLange, Irving Mills (publisher) and Will Hudson. Then the strings come in with the "Theme from Picnic" by George Duning. This recording is by the Columbia Pictures Orchestra, conducted by Morris Stoloff.

  • @wahoo76 Thanks for the information... I believe it's musical genius to combine two basically incompatible songs into one glorious and unforgettable smash hit.

  • @biglongcadillac You put my thoughts into words beautifully. Thank you!

  • The strings make me melt!

  • Kim Novack + William Holden+ this song in the background! Need I say more?

  • Steve Allen set beautiful lyrics to Duning's music: On a picnic morning, without a warning, I looked at you and somehow I knew, On a day for singing, my heart went winging, A picnic grove was our rendezvous. You and I in the sunshine, We roamed the fields and farms, At the last light of evening, I held you in my arms! Now when days grow stormy And lonely for me, I just recall picnic time with you.
  • @dwsingrs How In The World Do Guy's Come Up With Such Beautiful WORDS.......

I Keep Trying But NOTHING Like THAT !!!

    Tucson Tom....motretsuc74@aol.com

  • @dwsingrs: Thanks for the lyrics. They are beatiful!! :)

  • Dreamy music , at it's very best. Great dance tune !!! love it !!!

  • there sure are a lotta' comments.. if u happen to notice THIS ONE PA-LEASE send this song to me as a file or something! I'd right here give you an e-mail BUT I don't wanna get trolled forever & ever.. THANYOU FOR UPLOADING =]

  • @ToroTheIllusionist : You can buy the CD sountrack to the film PICNIC and get this piece of music as well as the theme title of the film.

  • I remember seeing this movie when it just came out Wonderful music...a great composer The man was a genius

  • Classy!

  • I was six or seven when this movie came out. But I watched it first in the mid 1960's as a teenager. I have loved it and the music since then. I have always also remembered the guitar style. Watching Steve Allen and his jazz groups on the Tonight show also inspired me to learn music, first saxophone, then electric bass and guitar which I still continue with and teach part-time today. Who was the guitarist? Was that a Gibson ES-175 he was playing?

  • I loved this since I was a child. It's very soothing.

  • I love it. Nothing like it now.

  • I don't know who played the piano for this song, but he takes all the other jazz pianists I have heard to school. He probably got a couple hours wages, a atta boy, and a couple beer bar gigs out of it. Seems old Morris wasn't throwing his name out there much. Maybe he did but I just didn't catch it.

  • It doesn't get any better than this. Although Kim Novak and William Holden were wonderful in the 'dance scene'. It's not them; it's the song! The arrangement is amazing.

  • This is one of my all-time favorites.

  • Morris Stoloff out did himself on this one, and I was 14 years old at the time.

God, where did the time go?

  • I never saw the dance. Listening to this.......I didn't have too.

  • wonderful memories ,so long ago,:(

  • Heard this song on the radio today but didn't know the name. Thank goodness the announcer gave the name and I'm enjoying this on you tube. Will continue to do so for a long while. Thanks to the creators for this timeless masterpiece.

  • Beautiful!! Thanks !

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a timeless and beautiful masterpiece. Just wonderful!! Thanks for posting.

  • This was a work of art, combining both songs for 'Picnic" I remember seeing the movie, but i think i was in Iceland and saw it at the theatre on base. Yes i do play piano, love all these great tunes, and played with bands between Iceland, Cape Cod . I just got this computer, never had You-Tube before, but son said "dad, you're in the 21's century" I'll go practice/play a few of these later on. I'm glad to see all those enjoying the great songs.

  • Man, this makes me wish I could play piano. People would love your ass if you could play this song.

  • Par excellence! A+++

  • One of my absolute all time favorites.

  • This is the best arrangement of the song "Moonglow" and one of my favorite pieces of music scored in film. Absolutely beautiful. Made me a fan of Morris Stoloff forever!!!

  • Just too smooth for words. Love it. Thanks for the post.

  • Those of you who would like to see a recreation of this on Dancing with the Stars, raise your hand.

  • One of the prettiest songs ever written.

  • I LOVE THIS SON.... it reminds me of a time when all was good and it had the sexiest dance scene ever. I'm so nostalgic for these type of movies... Kim Novak and William Holden were so fabulous... what a special time in our history. I'm sad those "good old days" are gone forever. Lovely, lovely.....

  • When this film was made, in the '50s, they didn't have the camera technology that they have today so what you're suggesting doesn't seem doable to me. Even a guy, who can't dance, can manage the few steps that Holden did in this scene and we witness this sequence at weddings all the time.....K

  • If arranger's and composer's, nowadays, could only score music to pictures like this one. Jesus, what happened to film and music...(???)

  • I was 16 years old when this came out. At 16 everything was dreamy and impressionable. This has been my favorite for over 50 years. This song will live on forever.

  • I was 14 when this song peaked on the charts, it was the most popular version on the radio stations in Kansas, where the movie was filmed.

  • No words will ever describe this arrangement. Can't top this. Thanks for sharing this....brings back the best of music and the best of times.

  • Sensual and rhythimic ... a devolve into the experience.

  • OMG I love this song and I haven't heard it for over 40 years!!!! TenStarsplus !!!! I never got to see the movie becaus my whole family was sick with the flu when it was playing!!! I was 13 years old at the time in 1956 !!! Thank you so much for posting this !!!!!

  • OMG love it!!! One of my favorite movies and the dance scene on the dock is definitely the most romantic and sexiest in movie history. Perfect!

  • oh its just soo smooth

  • The William Holden and Kim Novak dance scene, on the lake pier, was one of the best in movie history. Harrison Ford and the Amish girl tried to top it, in the dance scene in the barn loft in the movie Witness, but didn't quite beat Picnic.....K

  • @kaymcclain1

William Holden couldn't dance, didn't know how. Only the camera and Novak actually moved. Great camera work to make audience think the two were dancing.

  • @POLLUXAKS4 God, but the look into each others eyes. The dance scene in picnic with this song playing in the background, the fire coming off the screen is probably the most erotic in the history of all American cinema!

  • I am just so crazy about this tune played in the movie, PIcnic. Very unique the way it was composed. Nony Sablay North Lass Vegas Nv.

  • In Bradley Beach there was a pavillon and on the weekends it was sort of a juke box Saturday night. I remeber watching my two cousins dancing with these two dummies from New York to this. They eventually married them and have been happily married ever since. Great song, great memories. Thanks for posting it.

  • This Baby Swings !

  • So very beautiful and bittersweet....

  • What's the chance of a tune of this ilk being successful today? Zilch.

But, alas, we do have cRAP to tide us over. Where did we go wrong?

  • Frankieheartsful, you wrote: "What's the chance of a tune of this ilk being successful today? Zilch."

And my reply... " There is no possibility of this quality of music returning, no more then there is an opportunity for us to recapture who we were back then either. Perhaps in the next life!"

  • AMEN!

  • @amalfi348 Kudos to YouTube for giving a forum to recall the great past. Nowadays it's zillions of clones of Star Bores music that's called sound track music. This analog record with its nicks scratches is far off galaxies ahead of the Star Bore clone-ish music.

Don't bring in the clones. :)

  • This was the kind of popular instrumental music of the early and mid '50's. I was nine thru twelve and loved this. This one is my favorite, nothing can touch it. Then early rock and roll for white folks in summer 1955..... then March of 1956 Elvis exploded on mainstream radio..... But then we still had rhythm, melody, nice, innocent lyrics, if somewhat silly at times

  • Well said

  • You are sooooo right!

  • Sensuality exudes from every musical note, and oh the feeling that warms the veins to our heart!

  • We are on the same wave length. I immerse myself into every note.

  • One of the best instrumentals ever!

  • I agree with all of the above comments. A terrific piece of music. I too wish I had someone special to dance with to Moonglow!

  • Me too,

  • Hats off to Mr. Stoloff. An absolute genius.

  • We love to dance to this, even when I am using crutches.

  • I've never forgotten the dance scene from Picnic. That beautiful music and the obvious sexual tension between Bill Holden and Kim Novak made me feel warm all over!

    MrMaddawgg

  • I am in absolute heaven when I hear this song I can't get enough of it. I didn't hurt to have Bill Holden & Kim Novak who well paired in movie. I just wish I had soeone to dance with to that song

  • great piece of jazz..........timeless even after all these years.

  • What isn't well know is that Steve Allen, the first "Tonight Show" host wrote the words to "The Theme from Picnic."

  • Many moons since I saw this flick and I still get goosebumps

    I'm just an old hippie

  • God, old analog recording is SO much better for this kind of music..you would never hear that string tone with digital.

  • Incredible piece of music ... blend of jazz and Picnic ... "That moonglow gave me you."

On a picnic morning without a warning, I looked at you and somehow I knew ... :)

  • The trio (piano, bass and drums) was Waldo de los Rios.

  • @EdGomide Waldo de los Rios didn't come to the United States till 1958. What did Morris Stoloff do, go to Brazil so Waldo could make the record? Get real.

  • @russellrvr - I read that information on the back cover of the album years ago, before I -unfortunally- get rid of all my LPs. Let's hope someone who still have this album may confirm(or not) this information. By the way, Waldo was not from Brazil, but from Argentina. That's all I know, but I may be wrong.

  • @EdGomide Man, you better go back and read Waldo do los Rios' bio. He wasn't even in this country when this film was made. I'm sure he made a cover, like every other band in the world,

  • Realmente EXCELENTE

  • i definitely like this :)

  • What a great piece of music!

  • @CFMD28 You said it. I heard this during my growing up years. (Uh-uh, I won't tell my age, though it kind of gives me away, LOLOLOLOL. I am 21-plus).

  • @Juliaflo Yes, LOL ! I'm 21 plus also. That's a good way to put it. Hey just remember, The older the violin, the sweeter the music.

  • morris stoloff, and moonglowwow he is just superb.just love this theme from picnic one of my favorites.they sure could play the guitar and piano in this.

  • Is that Eddy Heywood on the Piano, it sounds like him...

  • listen to the snare drums, perfect accompaniment. great!

  • Oh yes, especially touch at end of first go. I paid $27 for the Instrumental Classics CD jus to have this.

  • Absolutely...beautiful...........reminds me of a very special time, with all of my loved ones around me...thank you...

  • me, too...recalling some nice memories

  • Takes me back to my twenties, it was such a romantic time. a truly lovely era.

  • This was Morris's only chart hit, in fact, he isn't even credited with its flip side! Great record, though, thanks for posting.
