Personally I think terminators can be reprogram to do so, meaning the terminator here and the terminator in terminator 3 are different. John Connor probably reprogrammed the terminator, thus allowing it to self-terminate in terminator 3.

People argue that 1 terminator cant do what another can but then argue that they all cannot self terminate just because 1 model said it couldn't in 1 film, its completely possible that the hydrogen celled models were programmed with this capability, maybe its something they do to ensure if they fall they can take out the enemy with them, just a thought, i mean killing the tx may have been to save john but it still self terminated when it could have thrown the cell

well, that was funny, but it's not possible. The terminator in T1 was T-800. The Terminator in T3 was T-850. It's T-850's design structure that when its body gets damaged by a certain much, then its body part heats up and explodes. T-800 doesn't have that.

The T-800 ran on a mini nuclear reactor in a sense. The T-850 ran on dual Hydrogen Fuel cells. The models are programmed to not self-terminate. This would be impossible but hilarious if it did happen. A big fuck you to the time line! roflmao

T800 Model 101 can't self terminate. He will try to reach his goal even if he lose most of his body. T850s(Terminator 3) had more advanced CPU and were reprogrammed to be able kill them selfs in order to complete the mission.
