I recently discovered that this song was actually some kind of a note-for-note imitation of one of Muddy Waters' song...Combined with Robert Johnson's lyrics...I think we can all agree this is a one of a kind mix it just fits perfectly...Oh yeah by the way I love this song it's a very nice blues. Thanks for posting!
tough to pull off with 1 instrument, aint none like mr. clapton, most are either pickerz or singers, very few are both.giutar players reconize THIS,he is a badass player and sanger
This is, in my opinion, one of the best Clapton's versions of Robert Johnson. A simple yet beautiful slide work abd a great interpretation of the lyrics. No need to compare Johnson's and Clapton's versions, both are indeed awesome songs.
I dunno, I wouldn't automatically say EC's guitar is better than RJ. RJ seriously took acoustic blues further than I imagined was possible. If he had access to an electric... man, that's something to ponder.
Robert Johnson is almost too intimidating to try to emulate. I can get my head 'round Clapton more easily. So yeah, in a way Eric is more of a role model for my guitar playing...
you know this is just a cover right? this was written by Robert Johnson. possibly the greatest blues man who ever walked the earth, and who also started the 27 Club.
I haven't read the older comments before I wrote mine. Some people already said the same thing (about Rory Gallagher). Too much is boring! But I'm a woman and I love Rory more than Clapton although Eric is perhaps the better musician. However, I'm mad about blues.
hey thats a pretty good comment, i think. he does kinda look like bill gates. and i like eric clapton, but its a little presumptous to call him one of the "best in the world." i mean hes got good blues chops, but there are plenty of less-famous virtuosos who could blow clapton outta the water.
His voice has gotten better and better as he's gotten older. More soulful, more depth, more humanity. His playing has become less flashy; more soulful, too. It gives hope to humanity.
First time i heard this was in a pool hall in Chicago. Hadn't heard it in years, and I found this. I must have listened to it 100 times by now, and It never gets old.
its a resonator acoustic, im not sure of the brand. it might be a Dobro since they specialize in resonators, but i doubt it. It might be an old martin, but im not sure.
Absolutely gorgeous, I've loved this song since i first heard it, luvd it so much I sang it for my vce exams, with this song I pushed through my improvisation and I wanna pik up the guitar!
thats completely ridiculous. upon that basis, jimi hendrix is ALSO an albert king copy. do you know just how many riffs Hendrix "borrowed" from albert king? this is the BLUES man. SRV isn't copying albert king, because albert king didnt write most of those riffs either. borrowing and trading riffs is a tradition in the blues. going all the way back to robert johnson. you think Johnson came up with even half those riffs? its all traditional.
Clapton is a realy good player, technical perfect,... But he had no emotions in this song. Rory Gallagher wasn't a perfect player, but he had the sound and the emotion. So I think Rory was the best player in his time
I'm sorry but this may be the most off the wall statement I ever heard. I listened to the Gallagher versions and they can't touch this with a 10 foot pole.
This song requires alot of practice to get it sounding just right. This is why Clapton is so accomplished, he can play electric, acoustic, Nylon or Dobro with a pick, botleneck or fingerstyle.
When did music become a competition? Both Rory and Clapton do their own INTERPRETATIONS of a Robert Johnson song, no one version is better then the other because each person has a different view of the song.
Rory doesn't know Delta Blues technique. His version is what I would expect at the local Guitar Center-- you know right before you laugh and walk away... Delta blues style is about economy of motion and no "wasted" notes. His singing has something less to be desired. He sounds like my uncle singing in the bathtub.
Djeez man at least show some respect for Rory. He was a real bluesman compared to Clapton... Rory was the best Delta blues player of his generation. I don't even know why I am replying to your shitty comment... Rory was the best !
Clapton's unplugged version of this song was meant to be a dedication to the works of both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. That is why the song sounds similar two both artists style's. The Guitar is a Dobro F60 model. If you think that's cool check out the one Doyle Bramhall II is playing on "Terraplane Blues" with Clapton.

I'll give ya this--Clapton's got balls to even play this knowing Rory Gallagher's version is out there for all to see..........................who the BEST IS Guys, it ain't even close......
agreed, i hate eric clapton but he does a good job here. Everyone else butcher r.j. terribly. Even eric clapton missed the boat but at least this sounds like a blues song
I don't care what anybody says, that is a great version of Walkin Blues. I usually don't bring race into it, but if Son House, Robert Johnson, and Muddy Waters were sitting around jamming, and they decided to let a white guy play, it would probably be Eric Clapton. He's not always the flashiest or even the most low down, but he gets it. And that vid there shows it.
hm, hard to say for 2 simple reasons, first of all gallagher plays it more a standard accoustic blues while this one is much more the delta blues, then claptons version is much much nearer to the original recording by robert johnson
for me this one is leagues better, even if the singing might have been a bit more powerful, but well clapton is not buddy guy^^
not only that, Clapton's got his own blues. Check out his lifestory man, he's gone through some tough stuff. But he took the energy required to pout, and learned to play the blues.
This song is not from EC neither from Robert Johnson. The original version is from Son House, and then Johnson done his version. It is a pity that you have Johnson as the best, but Son House blows him a way with just one note.
