  • im from switzerland to (zuric) and we laught at the berns because the speek so slowly^^

  • Without wanting to sound pedantic, Bern is not in fact the 'biggest state or canton in Switzerland', Graubünden is!

  • Röaschtigraba xD . Ächt guet gmacht! Really good!

  • but: Züridüütsch is the only real Swiss german...because we are the elite of Switzerland unlike the Farmers from Berne and the rest of the country...nope, thats not Zürich arrogance, just the truth *g*

  • That is so well done. You really have mastered the Bärndütsch dialect. Merci viumau für üs das z'eige. Viely Grür\ess vo Ouschtralie.

  • Very good job! Sehr guet gmacht!

  • Ich habe Hochdeutsch für sieben Jahre gelernt, aber ich kann noch nicht EIN Wort auf Schweizerdeutsch verstehen D:

  • Sorry grandma, the biggest "state" if you want to call it like that, ist Graubünden (Grisons) in the very east of Switzerland.

  • this is ace :D your pronounciation isnt bad either. schööne tag no! Hoff das de wider moll in unsers schööne land kunsch.

  • We make fun of the Bern people, because they're speaking very slowly

  • Merci vieumauu! Very nice of you, everyone. It's just plain fun for this grandma!

  • I'm really impressed ! Usually we hear that American people really don't get Swiss culture at all, why are there 3 different languages ? What, you don't even understand each other ?? Why are there so many dialects in such a small country ?

It's touching to see that there are people who are interested in our small country's culture and languages, even if swiss german is hell to learn and the french speaking swiss people fear it, actually. So bravo to you ! Guet gmacht :)

  • WOW! That's amazing, an American lady who speaks Swiss German. You are doing it really good!!

  • chkääääs chkueeeche :D hahaha finds aber toll wie du schwizerdütsch redsch :D respekt !!

    wo/wie hesches glernt?

  • Everyone laughs, because people from Bern are said to be VERY slow

  • bern isn't the biggest city of switzerland - its just the capitol city.

    ;)

    (biggest one is zurich)

  • swiss german is different from german or is it the same thing

  • @Maidenfairy12 there is three widespread varieties of german: that of austria, of germany and of switzerland, with the one from germany being the most widespread and from switzerland the least. when written one can find only minor differences, but when spoken you can clearly hear where the respective speaker is coming from, going as far as two german native speakers, one from northern germany and the other from switzerland, cannot understand each other at all.

  • @musiclover911000 Dafür gibts ja Hochdeutsch, oder ?

  • well done :) vieli Grüess from the zurich-area of switzerland

  • i recently moved to Swiss this is very helpful >< thank you!!!!!

  • @TeamJusBieberYT

  • I actually dated a guy from Romanshorn Switzerland, I think the canton was Thurgau(?) and this is so true.. .with certain words he always sounded like he was hacking up a hairball. Kinda hot though. We still talk , and this video made it even better :)

  • Comment removed

  • very well explained! Your Swiss German is actually better than your German! funny. The Germans wouldn't understand you anymore (expcept in the South). Greetz from Switzerland (Luzern)

    ps. ever tried Walliserdütsch?

  • Shit my nigguh!

  • I know that swiss german speakers make up the majority of switzerland´s population but for the life of me I could have never lived in any swiss german speaking canton, city etc.I spent three years living near Lausanne and thus speak excellent french and I also feel very comfortable visiting Ticino due to the fact that I speak italian also but swiss germans do not speak german! They speak among hundreds and hundreds of different dialects which tend to differ tremendously from one place to another!

  • @SLADODET

But in Germany they have also tons of different dialects...In Italy too....Go to England etc....Just the french ppl have accents but lost their dialects...almost n.o. speaks franco-provençal anymore....dommage...

  • I know you Swiss Germans make up the majority of Switzerland´s population but for the life of me I could never live in your parts of the country period!Give me La Romandie(I spent three years living near Lausanne and thus speak great french!) or Ticino(I also know italian!) but under no circumstances would I want to live in a predominately swiss german speaking canton or area simply due to the fact of language! You dont dont speak german at all!German is absolutely to difficult to learn also!

  • chääs... chääs chuächä.. :)

haha.. sie machet das supper..! witer soH..!

    really good!

  • omfg you made my day!! :D super gmacht! ;)

  • I'll be taking German for 3 semesters at Grand Valley State University. Should i just kill myself now?

  • I found out recently that my family is from thurgau, I'm trying to learn a bit about it, first question would be how do I pronounce my last name? Böhi? is it like bowie or bow he orrrr

  • @NemanorTheAlmighty

It' s almost impossible to explain as the true Ö sound doesn't exist in english. I wrecked my brain and if you pronounce "further" with a redicuously over the top english accent, the u sounds almost like the right Ö sound. Then, depending on the dialect, add "he" like in english with a short e, or add the english ee sound with a silent H. In both cases the accentuation is on the Ö. Does that make sense at all? :) Lovely language, eh? Tschau.

Bö-hi....the ö is like the sound e in Herman

I love it, when English people try to speak Swiss German.. It's really sweet! And not too bad!!! But it's a very hard language. Every Swiss understand it, when other people can't speak our language!

  • its so hilarious!

  • I notice that you pronounce the word "deutsche" somewhat differently than in high-german. Is this how the Swiss pronounce it?

  • in swiss german, 'deutsch' is pronounced as 'düütsch' (stress on the first syllable)

  • but there is only one syllable?

  • @nissanka

    deutsche in dialect is dütsche

  • "ann becomes annie in AMERICAN"??? 2:29

i'm not going to make a fuss about it but us canadians say annie too. i'm sure the brits and aussies do too

  • @MrMunari77 I worked as a dishwasher at the Burestübli :)

  • I thought I was the only one that noticed the mixing of High German, French and Italian in Swiss German! Thanks for validating it!

I am hoping to learn Swiss German because my mother-in-law is from Switzerland. I want my two children to know some words.
