Get some 80 grit sand paper and an orbital sander/DA works like a charm and takes off half the metal. Gouging with a grinding wheel.

I've also heard of guys using air filter oil to tack up their rims?

Actually earplugs and gloves is kinda handy too. But I only wear eye protection. He also forgot to mention that you don't apply a lot of force to your angle grinder.
