She has a very very thin sopranovoice which coudln´t fit for example a great Verdi opera or a Wagner. Her voice has a typically sound for an Operette and the technique is not useful today. You must have much more of head and sound colomn, both at the bottom the middle and even on the high notes. She is particular! But only in what she is singing.I can´t imagine her as a Leonora in Il Torvatore for example. Good to hear anyway.
a Trovatore Leonora? lol Is that supposed to be an offense for her? that a Stratospheric Soprano Coloratura would not sing a good Trovatore Leonora?
She is first class singer of her Kind, which is that of the extremely highly tuned Coloratura Sopranos.
As for the sound column in the middle did Devia, Gruberova and Sills have one ? most definitely not and they sang Assoluta roles (Bolena) without having tomatoes thrown at them (as they should)
this is exactely why she didn't sing Verdi or Wagner - as far as I know, because her voice was best for other music. As a voice teacher I can tell you, that not every voice is able to sing any kind of music. You can't compare her with something that wouldn't fit her voice. - and don't forget that for a very long time, composers wrote their music for a special singer who had special abilities, like singing very high, very loud, very low... :-)
exactly, it would be like saying that Hallstein wasnt that good because she could never sing Brunhilde or Abigaile!!
And it is exactly because of the fact that she stayed in the repertoire that her voice was made for and didnt start singing the Assoluta roles (Norma, Bolena, Elisabetta etc) that makes me admire her so much. Besides all these pieces she sang so beautifully are almost unknown even to comitted opera fans.
@prince2000ful At least Hallstein did not need prove that she should do every role there is to prove she is great. Hallstein is intwelligent and sensitive that she made the most of what she has. She stayed true and in her trueness she shines. She interprets well but most of all er artistry and musicianship is natural. Leonore, Odabella, Armide and the other big roles are not the Only roles in opera. There are too many, thats the real beauty. Monopoly is bad, really bad. NOw look, are there any?
Beautiful voice, florid technique, deep musicality. She was one of very few singers, which included Victoria de Los Angeles, Fritz Wunderlich , who could express their personal joys of singing with great gift of communion.
Very delightful. The high notes being staccati it is difficult to say for sure if they are being sung full voice rather than simply being whistled. i remember something awhile back about Hallstein having a passagio somewhere around D so all her stratospheric high notes were whistles. Anyone know if this was true.
Something tells me Millocker never wrote a Bb into his operetta and Hallstein would have done just as well had she omitted them. It's interesting nonetheless.
Hallstein is very special because she can maintain the Transparency and Ethereal Texture of her sound but with a placement that is not Whistle and at the same time being able to sustain her tones without flutter and added to all this a Crystalline Surface reminding crystal bells. Her musicianship is also first class (of the level of christa ludwig) something extremely rare among coloraturas.
But what knocks me dead in Hallstein, is her Intonation. It is the Heaven of Intonation
@kgarmaker123 the thinner sound is a normal phenomenon for all instruments of very high pitch. Their sound becomes more and more slender as it goes up in pitch. It happens to violin and guitar strings, to bells to pianos, and yes to birds and other naturally occurring sounds. I personally fail to appreciate so many people's insistence that it should not happen to the human voice too, or that if it has happened, the singer must not be using true voice.
@Twisterjoe understood. That really wasn;t my point... I would agree with you , if it was.. The sound I am describing is of their lower and middle voices.. ( they are strange sounding to my ears.). Mado Robin for instance, is another example of this.. and so is this lady.
rarity is what is what we all seek - singing stratospheric notes is not that rare. Being able to climb up there with the entire body of the voice is extremely rare plus allows the singer to sing dramatic roles cause a voice that can maintain the thickness of sound column up there usually has a fascinating middle and bottom thus is able to sing the Assoluta Repertoire which Hallstein and her kind wouldnt never dream of singing and if do so become ridiculous (like Gruberova)
@LohengrinT To suggest: 1. that the most admired rarity is only size of instrument, is to reduce a fine art to the similar standards of pornography in which size of instrument is appropriately most important. 2: that charm and nuanced musicality are not a rarities themselves to be desired, is to cast out of the repertoire an entire volume of music for which those are precisely the appropriate approach.
Apt tone for the music being sung is an extreme rarity today, and most desired in a Fine Art.
Stunning voice, was enchanted long before the whistle. I am in love.

She has two qualities in abundance that all fine singers must have- a free tone and exquisite control. Brava Ingeborg Hallstein!

Her intonation is the purest and her voice is perfectly placed and beautiful on the highest notes as is in the middle.

indeed she has one of the most natural placements/flows of sound I have ever heard. She is a miracle of Nature
