so damn funny!!! I hate it how everyone thinks we speak with really posh accents....I moved form England to Australia and I want my Accent back, and everyone who was trying to imitate me was saying 'oh dont do thot! poss me a gloss!'...Grrr...but this is so funny and true
I appreciate your perspective on it. The only way to learn and accent is to listen to authentic people speak it. If you have the ability to emulate it (and not everyone does) then congratulations. Learning it from someone who learned it from someone else only serves to 'water it down' and it comes out badly. Kudos to you for setting it straight. (I'm a Canadian trying to perfect that "silver spoon" snooty accent for a stage play)
This crazy Goodwin video that you're using is just too stupid sounding. It sounds like she's from Minnesota or in the northern New England region of the US. And Goodwin sounds like some kind of high school drama "expert". I have created my own British accent and it sounds convincing-- enough so that a native British English speaker asked if I was from Sussex-- and I told her Wisconsin (back in my native American English tongue). We had a good laugh over that one...
No offense, but I think it weird that you are offended by how she attempted an English accent, and yet your attempt at an American accent was equally bad.
Goodnight! It's 1:42AM so I'm going to sing one song then go to sleep. Btw I'm trying real hard to learn an english accent. I'm from America, but I love England.
Good deal girl I like the way you handled that,, and I'm from the u.s.a born raised in the deep south lol they don't get the way we talk erther,, that's why we run them back up north lol
I've been searching for some help doing a British accent for a short play, and you were a LOT more help. Thank you :) My one criticism : your comparison between US & Brit accents. Not all American's speak with a southern accent - Only in the south ;) I live in NY, and sound NOTHING like that when I talk. I know you never claimed to have expertise in an American accents. But, it could come across as VERY offensive to Americans.
This practically completely mirrors the butchering and misconceptions about the American Southern accent. You really have to laugh at Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds or that chick from The Closer when they try and fail to play it right.
Love..love your video. Thanks for clearing up so many us Yanks conceived notions of how to speak the British accent correctly. There are so many terrible "How to"tutorials, but after reading a lot of comments by other Brits. Please keep in mind most of us Yanks aren't trying to learn the British accent to poke fun or to tease, but rather are fascinated with the accent. Just as many are fascinated by our New York accents. Thanks for posting such an informative video.
I really like you. Believe me. I am native German and learned English on several different school from teachers of different nationalities. I learned it all my life so I can speak it almost perfectly. So at some point I realized that some words I pronounce American and some British. I was hitting my face onto the keyboard of my computer when I heard what she was saying and how right you were. Even I knew how to pronounce anything that it sounds more British but that women has simply
Look I'm American and That video was perfect(even though I already have a perfect British accent) she's right and the Americans(not including me) should stop making fun of British people.
@TheToxicGrimling there isnt such thing as a STANDARD british accent e.g. in scotland there is an accent called doric and in london there is an accent called cockney
If your going to try to make Ur accent sound better or whatever and your getting mad/upset about it.... Well stop because Americans don't talk like that. We talk like the "people up north" or whatever you were talking about. So before you get upset about an American teaching the British accent wrong u need to chill because YOUR teaching the American accent wrong. Basically I'm just say SHUT UP!
Funny Video. But actually I still hear People use RP/ BBC accent, mostly in older people(especially actor) some still learn RP accent to get rid of accent like say 'Yam Yam'.My uncle speaks with a kinda RP(BBC) accent mixed with a sort of Estuary with hint of Welsh and 'Sheffield' (he was Born in Cardiff He's Half English Half Welsh) He was learned to Speak in RP in school when he was young in London. His son however learned RP as to not sound like his Father's "mixed ...accent".
Thank you for this video! I'm actually a student and just learned some little English. But even I knew that 'fast' doesn't become to 'fost'! And this is one of the most hilarious things! Lol ;)
I just want to point out that some people who are actress or a cosplayer who are american or any other nationality just needed help playing a role thats why I clicked on this. But I agree that woman doesn't know what shes talking about this is very funny I love your sense of humor :D

I will visite the UK next summer because of her classes!!!

The only people that should be using a British accent when in England are spies and the fugitives who obtained a fake British passport in Malaysia. Other then that be who you are. I'm American and I'll speak how I speak where ever I'm at.
This was great!! I appreciate your humour in teaching the correct changes. That being said....I am going to use the word "gastric" in a sentence next time I'm in London!! hahahaha

She's absolutely correct about this woman. She's rubbish. But, her imitation of the woman's accent is a little ridiculous. Apparently all Americans sound southern.
It is true that her attempt at a 'standard' British accent was a failure. However, your interpretation of how she said the words with an American accent was as bad as her interpretation of a 'standard' British accent. Not that you were trying to, but if you could properly identify the Standard American English accent, you'd notice it sounds just like the 'northern' accent you used. whenever i have to do a British accent for theater i watch a lot of British television. my accent is not annoying and exaggerated. my friends say i talk like Mat Smith. so i am happy with that
