I'm not surprised some people still don't get it. If you played the game you should though. It's like this, you get through the game without say... "completing the game 100%" which doesn't give you the real ending "Nagisa and Ushio dying" Then you are given a chance to go back, via save point and collect the orbs to unlock the real ending (happy)
Tomoya had another chance or something like that.. he had another chance after Ushio died. Thats what I think, He went back to 5 years ago when Nagisa was giving birth to Ushio and that time she lived.
It's like near the end of "It's A Wonderful Life". George Bailey realizes that no matter how bad things were, he still wouldn't want to change a thing. But in this case because Tomoya came to the same conclusion, things did change for the better! OK, that may not be exactly right; but as long as Nagisa and Ushio don't die do you really care?
oh my god i haven't seen this part in a while but it is still so sad both nagisa and ushio's death i cried so much i fell asleep and when i woke up i cried again.... i guess it just goes to show tht anime is very powerful depending on the story behind it don't you agree...*sniffles*
So Tomoya was the robot/doll in the hidden wirld, Ushio was the girl. In that city where Tomoya, Nagisa and everybody else lived, was that tale (what Yukine Miyazawa told in episode.. 8? I'm not sure). Tale was that when the happiness in the city exist, if you make some guy happy, (well it's maybe not so simple..) you get that light orb, and get your wish. Tomoya got his final wish when he apologizes to his father.. And when Ushio dies, he said 'Someone, someone save Ushio', and got his wish. (:
this anime is so sad and happy at the same time, in fact its so happy and sad that it will make the toughest guy cry, in know i did and im usually really cold and serious and not moved by things so if you don't feel anything from watching CLANNAD you are not human

@mjfanripluv well, you are wrong. That is what tomoya remembers from all the thimes she have died. Now, in this timeline, he just have this vauge feeling that she was realy sick, but survived. In the timeline of the last episode of clannad - afterstory ushio is alive. But that is a different timeline then the one you have been following throughout season 1 and most of season 2. In that timeline, the one clannad started with, ushio did die.
@MegaWolfchild2 ofcourse they are dead, and have died several times on other timelines. Tomoya and ushio works through several timelines to cellect the "happiness" needed to undo nagisas death, and that is the final timeline that is shown to us in the anime.
Clannad deals with several timelines. as far as we know, nagisa and ushio is only alive in a single one, whereas they are dead in countless others.
In my opinion, the whole story, about the robot and the girl, it was proving to Tomoya that Ushio didn't only need him, he needed her too, and when he finally realized that, he was sent back to restart his life, but only because of all the people he'd made happy, everyone Nagisa and himself had helped,

Not exactly... It's never fully explained, but here's what I think happened: Tomoya; he existed in both the real world and the 'secret' world. It's told to us many times that the 'lights' in the Secret World represnent happiness. Well, since Tomoya existed in both worlds, I believe that his 'happiness' was trying to balance between the two, but it couldn't. So the 'happiness' was stuck in a void. But when Tomoya 'died' after Ushio's death, the happiness rushed to the other and he got his wish.

the orb thing and tomoya's ability to go to the past is because of his ability to collect orbs after what really happened ( nagisa's death and raising ushio alone), he confronted his dad and some other things happened which made him more of an adult and he collected more orbs, which made him able to go back to the time when nagisa was still giving birth
Let me het this straight. Tomoya was given one wish, which he wad going to use to stop ever meeting with Nagisa. He regreted it and wishes to be with her and she lives, right?

I cried a lot in this scene ... He already lost Nagisa and now Ushio, thats what I thought but then again its like he was given another chance ... he went back to past 5 years ago when Ushio was born and there Nagisa lived and also Ushio lived a healthy life ... I'm really happy !!! =) My favorite moment is when Tomoya and Nagisa sang a lullaby for Ushio "Big Dango Family", was the title right ??? O_o ...

actually the light touched okazaki and the power of the light grants wishes so he get back in time and nagisa lives just like allyno said. at the end of the story they lived all together and have a picknick and fuko is in their to (this is the number 1 anime i love this)

I finished this anime today and man, I was in tears. This is so much more emotional than the first. I love that both Nagisa and Ushio were alive in the end - Nagisa's death was so hard on Tomoyo to begin with and then his daughter.. Well, it most-likely would have destroyed him. Things like this often confuse me, and I had to read an episode guide to understand it. But I love this anime - definately a favorite. <3
This is showing what it WOULD have been like, if Nagisa and Ushio had never died. Apperently Tomoya had a dream, where Nagisa came to him and showed him what it would have been like. But in the last ep, Ushio--The grown Ushio that hung out with the Robot(Tomoya)-- was found by Fuko passed out under a tree by the hospital. So other than the information I just gave, I don't know anything about what happened next, or how things turned out.
im pretty sure they did die, but it has something to do with that other worlds thing theory that Kotomi's parents studied about and about how the different world are connected somehow

You see... Clannad comes from an eroge (erotic game) and so it had many endings, one of them, the worst one, is the first shown in the anime, in which both ushio and nagisa die, the other one shown is the good ending, in which both nagisa and ushio live, hope i cleared some doubts :)

Unfortunately, it appears they've used the tired old deus ex machina "They came back to life. Deal with it." I wish that when people died, they stayed dead, like in real life, so that it could realistically reflect on tragedy that could happen and probably is happening somewhere.
In that case wacth Clannad Movie ,in there they rnt magicly resurected , btw its not clear if they rly died or if it was just Tomoyas dream he got from being afraid bout Nagisas conditions :P

@Greenmarthy I freaking love anime, and Clannad is my third favorite of all time. I love unreal things, life is boring. But I am annoyed from not how, but THAT Nagisa came back to life. And, from pure logic, you can dismiss the "it's a dream" explanation. Because, if that were true, then that means he wakes up while his wife is in the middle of a very dangerous case of childbirth. That means he must have fallen asleep while his wife was undergoing childbirth, and has fallen asleep on his knees.

Dues ex machina? I suppose that's like saying how the story built up to that ending didn't matter.
And yes, we've already seen how Tomoya 'dealt' with the deaths so there's nothing wrong with having a happy ending. Clannad has always since the beginning been set on making people happy.

the orb thing and tomoya's ability to go to the past is because of his ability to collect orbs after what really happened ( nagisa's death and raising ushio alone), he confronted his dad and some other things happened which made him more of an adult and he collected more orbs, which made him able to go back to the time when nagisa was still giving birth

I cried a lot in this scene ... He already lost Nagisa and now Ushio, thats what I thought but then again its like he was given another chance ... he went back to past 5 years ago when Ushio was born and there Nagisa lived and also Ushio lived a healthy life ... I'm really happy !!! =) My favorite moment is when Tomoya and Nagisa sang a lullaby for Ushio "Big Dango Family", was the title right ??? O_o ...

actually the light touched okazaki and the power of the light grants wishes so he get back in time and nagisa lives just like allyno said. at the end of the story they lived all together and have a picknick and fuko is in their to (this is the number 1 anime i love this)

Its like he was given another chance ... he went back five years in the past when Ushio was born and there both Nagisa and Ushio live ... but also other said that the light grant his wish ... "When you get hold of this light your wishes will come true" they said ... so I guess that's the reason ! =)

I finished this anime today and man, I was in tears. This is so much more emotional than the first. I love that both Nagisa and Ushio were alive in the end - Nagisa's death was so hard on Tomoyo to begin with and then his daughter.. Well, it most-likely would have destroyed him. Things like this often confuse me, and I had to read an episode guide to understand it. But I love this anime - definately a favorite. <3

This is showing what it WOULD have been like, if Nagisa and Ushio had never died. Apperently Tomoya had a dream, where Nagisa came to him and showed him what it would have been like. But in the last ep, Ushio--The grown Ushio that hung out with the Robot(Tomoya)-- was found by Fuko passed out under a tree by the hospital. So other than the information I just gave, I don't know anything about what happened next, or how things turned out.

You see... Clannad comes from an eroge (erotic game) and so it had many endings, one of them, the worst one, is the first shown in the anime, in which both ushio and nagisa die, the other one shown is the good ending, in which both nagisa and ushio live, hope i cleared some doubts :)

@maximopetar clannad wasn't an eroge, but the spinoff was (Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life).
SPOILER WARNING!:
In the game, it is a prerequisite to pass the arc where Nagisa dies, or you won't get the Naoyuki story arc (which in turn will give you the last needed light orb for you to achieve the good ending). In other words, you have to play Clannad multiple times to get the After Story unlockable arc.

Unfortunately, it appears they've used the tired old deus ex machina "They came back to life. Deal with it." I wish that when people died, they stayed dead, like in real life, so that it could realistically reflect on tragedy that could happen and probably is happening somewhere.

@Greenmarthy I freaking love anime, and Clannad is my third favorite of all time. I love unreal things, life is boring. But I am annoyed from not how, but THAT Nagisa came back to life. And, from pure logic, you can dismiss the "it's a dream" explanation. Because, if that were true, then that means he wakes up while his wife is in the middle of a very dangerous case of childbirth. That means he must have fallen asleep while his wife was undergoing childbirth, and has fallen asleep on his knees.

Something like too much presure on his mind which caused him to space out and to imagine things.. or its been miracle coz city wanted to keep its inhabitants happy haha . Result is the same i love Clannad so much, there r only 2 animes i rated as Master pieces at animenewsnetwork one of them is Clannad AF.

i wouldnt say that. Entire anime was about slice of life,school life, family,growing up. Im happy with the fact it was miracle. U got problem with it not me... 1st u said those miracles there disturb realistic efect...., so i gave u another point of view and u gave me back it was miracle other way it would made anime pointless. haha u have to chose one way wich u prefer instead of just saying "anything said by someone else is bad" . Dues ex machina? I suppose that's like saying how the story built up to that ending didn't matter.
And yes, we've already seen how Tomoya 'dealt' with the deaths so there's nothing wrong with having a happy ending. Clannad has always since the beginning been set on making people happy.
