I will always treasure the memory of her recital at Portland's Lewis & Clark College back in the 70's. I had to catch the last bus back into town and was about to leave when she announced, as an encore, my favorite schubert lied. "Auf dem wasser zu singen" I would gladly have walked home rather than miss it; amazingly, the bus was delayed, so I didn't have to. She was one of the greatest of artists, and anyone posting here who asserts that she wasn't, clearly knows nothing about singing.
@goldenthroat86 I have never heard anything but praise for her singing and her recital work, nor have I ever heard a bad performance from her, either in recital or in oratorio, and I have often heard her live in both. She never ventured onto the operatic stage because she knew her limits, but pianists like Dalton Baldwin, who are used to working with the best, don't appear with jokes.
no, your are sheep. you think that if theres's Elly singing it's gotta be good. Well in my oppinion it's not. There are so many better singers and were at the time. Basta. My oppinion. You don't have to agree. right?
@mistatomsom You are welcome to your oppinion (sic), but I don't think calling those of us who appreciate her art sheep is called for. You don't have to agree with us, but I do expect you to deal with us with a modicum of respect. Ebbene, basta!
@mistatomsom I don't understand how you can say her performance is selfendulging. She is simply standing there and singing. She mad such a career because there were few who could sing Lieder and French Mélodie as well she could. You should listen to some of her recordings and you would understand.
Elly Ameling is and was known for her graciousness. Evidently you have not viewed the other videos of her here where she clearly, obviously and kindly acknowledges her accompanist, Dalton Baldwin.
@lmsubramaniam With all due respect, I have known Elly Ameling personally and have never observed what you declare. I would be interested in your sources...

This is how this should be played. <3 Baldwin.

I had no idea she was that petite - the piano comes up to her chest! I have always loved her singing. Baldwin is, as always, pretty much perfect.
VCDartay 1 year ago
@VCDartay I think the piano is lifted on rollers, so she's probably average height...

gosh, so I've made a few typos, so what?? Christ.
I cannot explain why i find her selfindulgent. I just do. art is not an exact science... I have worked with her too and she's not a nice lady.

I don't know how she made a career. I though she was a joke back then and time hasn't been kind to her reputation. What a mediocre voice!

Surely you are indujging in your own pea-brain opinion!

@mistatomsom you don't back up your argument. if anything is self-indulging it is your worthless opinion.
and indulge is spelled with an "i"

So sensitive and beautiful performance. Brava!

Absolutely lovely. Elly is a great example to follow in lieder and to know how put the voice on its right place :).
Bravissima, of course.

Extraordinary to think that Duparc's fame rests on twenty songs - but what songs they are!
And what a recital this was! Thank you for uploading it - really!

Actually only 17... 15 solo songs and 2 duets!

Really? I thought there were 20...thanks for letting me know.
