Just don't fall into the trap of being so not-superficial that you become superficial. You can be an intellectual and enjoy doing your hair and make up too. Just be you and don't care what other people make of it, mainstream, hipster, what ever.
That realization happened to me last year, when I joined middle school after being homeschooled for a very long time. I just chilled with the least popular people, like an obsessive gamer, insecure adopted girl I knew from back in kindergarten, this guy that everyone called fat, and a italian/mexican kid. oh and the goth/punks were pretty chill, like my suicidal friend. and as to your normalcy, honestly I would say if anything you are excellent :D
@98donkeydude you are lucky though, they are the enemy I can assure you. Every friend I have or ever did have I saw bullied, called fat, emo, whore, slut, faggot... I was bullied every day. But the enemy got their arms bent at unusual angles many a good, painful time :D
"In his often densely worded prose, Bourdieu discusses how those in power define aesthetic concepts such as taste. Referring to surveys of French citizens from different economic and educational backgrounds, he shows how social class tends to determine a person's likes and interests, and how distinctions based on social class get reinforced in daily life."- from Wikipedia page on "La Distinction", a book by Pierre Bourdieu.
I differenciate myself from other people and from the world by obsessively criticizing everyone and everything. That is because I see in all aspects of society that which results the most familiar and similar to myself. Like all critical theory, it all eventually degrades into a game of ontopolitics. I relate deeply to the sentiment you expressed in this video, but you must see the contradiction in your words; a contradiction I must also face.
"The narcissism of small differences, is the obsession of differenciating oneself from that which results the most familiar and similar." -Sigmund Freud
This is an extension of the process of creating an identity for the self, of which crucial parts occur during childhood and adolescence, although it continues throughout the entire life of the individual. Both of you difference yourselves by the same means, the crafting of your outward appearance via conspicuous consumerism.
i call people weird all the time. but i think of it as a compliment. why would anyone want to be like everyone else, or even like anyone else. it would be a miserable life, not wanting to be yourself.
7:34 What happened there... "but... but", and the video got more pixelated.
And hey, what do you mean it doesn't make sense? That's the only part that doesn't make sense, you knocking yourself. Oh, and don't try to be different just to be different. Just do what you like, and don't try to group yourself under anything, nor other people too. People are people, they like what they like for their own reasons.
Detached from the mainstream? Try not having a TV for a few years. People stop talking about TV shows around you because you constantly ask what the show is about! When they describe it, you comment that it doesn't sound very interesting then bring up the most recent book you have read to blank confused looks.
I'm not a "normal" guy. I never was. My HS girlfriend was "normal" and all of her friends were "normal." They were certainly annoying at times, but I found out as time went by that the reason they were "normal" is because they had nothing interesting going on for them. There wasn't a lot of depth there, and, so far as I can tell, that's still the case with most of them. They're leading bland, predictable lives.
I've since married that girl. She's normalized me a little, and I've helped her spread her wings. It was good for both of us. I guess what I'm saying is that there is some hope for "normal" people to become interesting members of society. But that's not the case for all of them. A lot of normalcy is determined by environment. These normal girls probably have a boring, bland and predictable environment. IF they're brave enough someday, they'll knock that shit off and turn into a real human.
U were so funny in this 1, I think that chick was trying to bond withe u.
The more u learn the more u differentiate urself from the herd, so careful ppl it's very alienating to push it far. I'm so damn disconnected from normies it ain't healthy, but if u use ur avant-garde understanding for the good u can tug the sheeple civilzation in the right direction and that makes it all worth the estrangement
You have natural beauty. You don't need to do those things to make yourself attractive. When you do decide to do the the hair, make up and jewelery thing, you'll do it with a lot more taste and style. ... :-)
Glad to see you don't cake your face with goo to feel pretty, what's your opinion on hair product in men?
Also: I found it peculiar that you first said this video was not about being bullied, only to continue completely bashing a girl who was doing her hair. Some could see that as bullying. Even though you probably didn't mean to. Think about what Jebus supposedly said: "Do unto others as you would.. wait, who drank all the wine?"
p.s. Could anyone explain what a 'prep' party is?
I was 14 when The Breakfast Club came out, and it was the first film my generation had that dealt with these differences between me and my fellow teens. I remember it all so well. It's those obvious differences in dress, etc, that are revealed as superficial to most people as time goes on. We all end up with the same things to deal with (work, bills, family...) and mutual empathy makes those obvious differences less and less important. Some though.. ..some *never* get it. But no-one likes those!
Okay, take this or leave it. These A-lister preppies are so phony and pretentious. I was a teacher for 27 years, and I never cared for them. To hell with "mainstream." To hell with piercings and tattoos and all the other faddish garbage teenagers feel they have to conform to in order to be "cool," whatever the HELL that is.
You are a NATURAL girl. That's much better than being "normal" in a society like ours. Consider yourself liberated from all that vanity and self-consciousness.
ha, i have 2 twitter accounts :P both of which i only used once and forgot the password for. oh, and as for an 'ask autumn' series if you do it on a regular basis, perhaps have people ask questions both in the comment section and/or through twitter?
you are definitely exactly like everyone else who claims they arent "normal"... grow up. no one cares... oh, and by the way, its normal to claim to not be normal
probably get this alot but you are super cute XD seriously though, i subscribed because your videos on atheism but you make good vids in general, keep up the good work
The typical stereotype for a girl is to be obsessed with fashion and cosmetics. What really interests me is the question: is there some instinct that leads most women more toward the aesthetic than the functional, or is it to do with upbringing and what's taught and expected by society?
ps. I'd say just be yourself in terms of looks. If it's what you're comfortable with and it identifies you as who you are, then people who see you won't go into a friendship thinking you're something you're not.
Your a tomboy for the most part awesome stay that way lols tats and percings meh if you want them cool it doesent matter much and well your detatched cuz your smarter then the most part you think about far more then they do most of the time. At least thats what I felt when I was in highschool hell I don't have a twitter, fuck twitter.
What I have against this video is that you're kind of praising yourself for liking "different" things. Just because you don't like make-up and you like video games, that doesn't make you the unique person. A LOT of girls are like you. Also just because you like something doesn't mean you're better or worse than someone else. Especially when you were talking about piercings. You're completely normal. Please don't take this as a personal attack.
Generally speaking, the less makeup and the fewer piercings, the more interesting and appealing women are. Women who wear lots of makeup make me wonder "What does she really look like?" .
It's interesting; you labeled yourself as the "anti-social nerd", how you're so anti-mainstream; but you readily and easily labeled yourself. The act of assigning labels to yourself/anyone is mainstream. I'm wondering if you did that purposefully to familiarize yourself with the concept of mainstream, or if you did that automatically? Not trying to be difficult or come across as such; I like your videos. I just like noticing people's behaviors and self-contradictions; it's telling.
There should be more "not normal" people like you. There are girls at my school who think that I am weird because I don't every use makeup or wear anything girly. And in general, I find that "not normal" people are usually more interesting and fun to be with.
People should learn to find comfort in your own originality, in the way you look and how you feel. Learn not fall into the negative traps of social acceptance and never forgetting who you used to be and who you will become. Learn to be Yourself and you will be remembered.
I truly believe that if more people think for themselves and create things for themselves rather than trying to validate their own sense of self-worth, the world would be a better, less greedy and vastly more interesting place

I find it very interesting how, off the top of your head, the thing you grasp for as a prime example of what sets you apart from other girls is the aesthetics of your clothing. It's just a mild, random curiosity that occurred to me when you started listing off how you are meaningfully different. I too am odd, yet I describe myself as being different with my choice of clothing as a single variable along the full gamut.
So, it just struck me, how you chose something so unimportant to focus on ^_^
