@1234534lukas D3000 and d60 are both ok, the d3000 is probably better because it has faster features but the best thing to get now is the nikon d3100 which has a huge improvement in image quality.
I still love my D40 to bits. The D60 is rubbish! I bought one and I sold it after 6 Months. I also have a D90. The D90 is also a cracking little machine also ( You can use non-moterised lenses on the D90 also)
I now how 3 DSLR cameras.. A D40 D90 and the all new D3100.
I carry a "Back up" camera at all times it is a 14MP point and shoot. However it is not a patch on my 6 megapixel D40.
Megapixels mean JACK SHIT! once you get over the 6 megapixel mark!
The D80 is still excellent, I love mine. The D80 is much, much better than the d40 and d40x. The D80 is one of the best deals of all the 1st gen digital, if not the best. I fully agree though about not buying one at the time this video was made.
What would you consider if you were on the school yearbook/newspaper, and are taking pictures of football games, bball games, and other stuff. but still presenting nature pictures?
no, what camera should I use if I want good sport pictures, while taking great nature picks? I was thinking D60, but then again, im no expert. what would you do?
Depends on your budget. The d60 is good but it is a pretty slow camera in terms of frame rate and processing speed. I would save for a d90 which is much faster for sports and also great for landscape.
better noise control, better image quality (not because of the pixels), much better menu with amazing picture control settings (same as the pro cmaeras), dust reduction, active d-lighting, vega lcd with four times the resolution of the nikon d80s lcd, video (not great but it is there), faster frame rate, quicker prossesing, better view finder, better auto focus (can track), hdmi, there are probably more but that is most of them.
ahh man... its just im now working and i want to buy nikon d80 d90, but a used d80 is cheaper and some even have a waranty!!!, but a d90 has something that i dont like for example video, why i need it in a fotocamera, btw its gonna be my first DLSR :P and im not going to buy a d40.
How long does the battery on the d40 last? Also is it a rechargable, or is it just AA or AAA batteries etc? Also, does the d40 come with any internal memory or a memory card.
J40d- did you stop to think maybe you're in the category he mention about better autofocus or using different lens. that was his whole point. don't buy the d40 or d60 if your planning on buying different lens.
That was an amazing presentation, thank you so much. I know that e1 seems to be saying the same thing but you really did help me out with picking out my first camera. I do have a question for you though. Since watching your videos I have noticed that you said the D80 doesn't have a self cleaner, and I was under the impression that anything from the D60 and over did. because I know that for beginners that is going to make a big difference too. thanks again. great work.
Another reason to choose D80 or D90 that you did not mention in your review: The others do not have the second lcd screen on the right hand side to show shooting info. In cheaper models these are shown on the main screen, which is a major inconvenience for serious photo enthusiasts.
thank you for the great review. i am planning on taking photography as a hobby and was still wondering if i should go with the d40 or d60. i guess i will start with the 40 and make my way up
in some ways. The d60 is lighter cheaper has better features and is much easier to control. the d80 on the other hand has a better auto focus system and bigger viewfinder.
QQQQcon, I have a question. You recommend the d40 over the d60, but say I wanted to get the same kit lens but with VR. Trying to buy the d40 body with the VR 18-55 mm lens turns out to be the same as buying a d60 with the 18-55 mm lens VR anyways. Is VR actually going to make a difference (in my later development as a photographer)or should i just get the D40 kit without the VR lens? Thanks!
i am also thinking about the d60 or the d80, i was in a shop and the viewfinder felt much better on the d80 so did the feel of the dslr when holding it in your hands. Since the d90 came the d80s dropped in price, almost same as d60. So for me its an easy chooice, but thats because i have big hands and fingers, i think that if you concidering between d60 or d80 go with the camera that feels best when holding it and looking threw the viewfinder. also d60 has wb and iso in the menu.
also i am looking at a D80 i am an amateur photographer that knows what he is doing, shoots on manual most of the tiime and looking to get my own digital slr, but i do not have the money to spend on a d300 or even d90 but still would like a decent serious amateur camera
thats is not true auto focus systems can be more accurate and if its fast it means it better, thats pretty obvious. and there are alot of people who dont know whether they should get the d60 and d80.
i got a question..i got a d80.and imma start doing self portraits..or fashion photagraphy..what lense would you use..i hears telephoto is a good kind ..Help
I'm thinking about buying a D60 but I don't want the kit lense. What do you think about the Sigma 17-70mm F2,8-4,5? (there is a new hsm version for d40/d60) Is it better than the Nikon 18-70?
Well, I feel that if you get a Nikon DSLR, you should use the Nikkor lenses, especially the 18-200mm by Nikkor. Try 'w w w . c a m e r a a d d i c t . c o m' they have extremely good prices.

Unless you print pictures larger than 20 x 30 inch you wont see much of a difference.

umm what about d80, its the same as d90, and because d90 is newer i would buy a used d80 for half the shop price and also with waranty !!

they are not the same at all. the d90 has a ton more to offer.

should have a 3rd point:
D80 can do CLS internally. D40/60 needs the SU800 to do CLS

QQQQcon, your the Bomb. Last question:
Beginner photographer,
Option 1: D40 with standard NON-VR lens kit
Option 2: D60 with standard VR lens kit
*note option 2 is approx. $130 US/CAN dollars more expensive
What would you choose, and what would I be missing out on if I choose option 2? Thanks for your awesome help!

AwkwardLe 3 years ago
vr is not super important in wide angle lenses unless you are going to be shooting in really low light situations without a tripod and at low iso.

chsjumper11 3 years ago
unless you have lenses that dont work on the d60 I would get the d60 over the d80.
QQQQcon 3 years ago
The D80 also has a better grip and sturdier build-quality. Not to mention that it has a wider zooming 18-135mm kit lens.
ParadoxlnABox 3 years ago
ok so the d60 is cheaper for a beginning photographer, but the d60 doesn't even have a real shutter curtain and uses an electronic one
what impact if any does this have compared to a real shutter curtain with a back up electronic one
chsjumper11 3 years ago
no impact what so ever. the d60 is a better camera unless you use lenses that will not work on the d60.
QQQQcon 3 years ago
the d40 and d60 is not the same, with the 60 new lens were introduced and are an improvement than the lenses offered when the d40 came out
doesn't his guy know when you want a good slr you need to look ant the lenses, the lenses make the picture.
godscuttingyoudown 3 years ago
this review is about cameras not lenses. seems to me you just want to pick a fight.
QQQQcon 3 years ago
Round One?
godscuttingyoudown 3 years ago
theirs no comparison between the d60 and d80
when i decided to buy a new basic d-slr i added up the expenses including accessories i would buy with the camera
D60 with 8 acessory pieces = 1100$
D80 with 8 of equivalent acessory peices = 1450$
also there's no such thin as "better focusing" when comparing focus between cameras
what your looking for is the time the camera takes to auto focus
the d60 auto focus is in the lens, the d80 is in the body, so the d80 will focus faster
godscuttingyoudown 3 years ago
thats is not true auto focus systems can be more accurate and if its fast it means it better, thats pretty obvious. and there are alot of people who dont know whether they should get the d60 and d80.
