  • Exercising on an empty stomach in the morning means your body is still fasting...you'll burn fat for fuel.

  • Carbs for breakfast is good! Shouldn't advise against eating a banana for it's carb content. breakfast should contain the most carbs of the day.

  • I eat nothing but raw fruits and herbs all day. This is what is best for me and my body likes it that way. I don't have a set meal plan, I just eat when I'm hungry. Yes, my diet is completely against what Dr. Mercola says(fruits are bad and should only be eaten as an occasional treat), but it works for me and I'm healthy with it. I refuse to have my life being controlled by some doctor or dietitian.

  • Listen,, herbertthe heisser, there are many many whey products out there that are not quality, of course you can buy whey a bit cheaper, but to get quality, you pay a wee bit more.. excercising on an empty stomach does no harm at all..If you think Dr Mercola thinks yiu are all idiots, think again,, maybe you are??he is not here to make millions of pounds from us,, he always states it clearly that he doesnt care where you buy your stuff.. His krill oil is the best i can find.

  • Never exercise totally empty. At least intake some BCAAs or you will be catabolic as all hell(body is going to use your muscle tissue). A small amount of whey will work as well. This guy must also think that you all are idiots... Paying $100 for 6lbs of whey and claiming that you save 43%? I can get 10lbs of whey for $50 with macros as good or better than this stuff.

  • weird... he pretty much gave the recipe for my secretfantastichomemadesmoothierecipe...dayum!

  • @DiGiTaLdAzEDM You also wanna watch the frozen fruit concentrate... it contains alot of fructose which is giving american diabetes more than dextrose is. And Raw eggs are perfectly fine!

  • @DiGiTaLdAzEDM

You wanna stay away from that milk powder for two reasons. One, when skim milk, 1% and 2% milk have their fat removed, they have to add in powdered milk because the product of less fat is a very watery, tasteless product. The problem with this is powdered milk contains oxidized cholesterol. The second problem, as I said is the powdered milk. And in the first place, the fat in the milk is good for you!

  • I cant run in the morning on a empty stomach. I like the the All berry Whey protein.

  • to much fructose which is a poison, glucose(dextrose) is much better

  • PS... WELL SAID alfaandomegaagain ... u got that right !

  • exercising before bed has the potential to promote better sleep because your body temperature drops to a much lower level after being raised form the exercise... bodybuilders have been doing cardio at night and sleeping more restfully for years

  • @theAKtor You are so lucky. If i exercise after say 5pm I am so ramped up that my legs feel like I have restless leg syndrome and I can't sleep.

  • @hyylo

Hi there, if you feel uncertain about what to eat or have any health troubles, I would find a good nutritonist to work with, follow Mercola or read some books on nutriton from Weston Price org. These things helped me find what is best for me. Goodluck in Your Journey!

  • Jeesh you got a lot of time to make breakfast lol

  • I bet you do feel better as the good Dr. says that pasturized milk destroys all the healthy bacteria so you were basically drinking dead bacteria in your gut.

I'm blessed to live near Amish people who sell raw milk. It is illegal here in most of the states, but some sell it regardless (on a small time basis).

  • Yes, in some places you can get it, that's true. But personally (and this is my just my idea, I cannot prove it) I don't think it's very natural to keep drinking milk during our whole life, particularly milk from another mammal that is not one of our own specie. But this is my belief, again, I am not a scientist.

  • I understand what you are saying. It has helped me in regulating my hormones though, so for me it's been good.

  • The protein powder and coconut milk are great for you as someone who has the protein metabolic type, but you aren't gearing that breakfast for the carbohydrate types out there.

  • It would be better if you had raw milk as the "fat free" is pasturized which is terrible for your body. You need those healthy fats.

  • Technically the best time to exercise is after noon; blood vessels are tight and constricted until around noon and optimum athletic performance is midday or after.

An unappreciated (and little known) fact is that the vast majority of exercise-induced heart attacks happen in the early morning hours before noon.

  • Salmonella only occurs on egg shells, and most likely from chickens raised in unsanitary conditions, i.e. factory farms.

  • The drink sounds delicious, but I would recommend using pasteurized eggs in the drink instead of locally produced (which aren't much safer than other eggs). I might have to try this out if the price is right.

  • Do you mean pastured eggs? If pasteurized, do you really think that all the heat coagulated amino acids, depleted biotin, and omega 3s are better?

  • People choose local free range eggs for many reasons. They usually contain higher amounts of nutrients, they are produced cruelty free...also they tend to actually be safer since the hens are healthy and produce healthier eggs which contains the correct anti-bacterial anti-viral compounds to protect the embryo.

  • Ive heard there is no benefit from waking up earlier to workout. I get my best workouts at 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

  • I have also heard that psyllium fiber causes you to need it for normal function once you start to use it. Hemp fiber and protein is a much cleaner and more nutritious source for these applications than psyllium or whey.

  • Is exercising on an empty stomach healthy?

  • @dynamicwellness33 It depends on what you're training for. When you do cardio on an empty stomach, your body taps into your fat stores for energy right away because your glycogen stores have been burned during sleep. So for cardio, it's very good. But f you're weightlifting, you want to eat SOMETHING to give yourself energy.

  • @dynamicwellness33 yep, improved protein synthesis, greater lipolysis, message me I'lls end you studies for the increased protein synthesis.

  • Don't let people give you "weird looks" about bringing your egg's and protein shakes with you, I happen to live the lifestyle that does similar things, if my girlfriend makes me go with her to a house party, i've even been known to take a my protein shake pre-made there for later in the evening, if i know were going to be there all night and i wont be able to eat a regular dinner. Lol.

  • bowl of porridge oats for breakfast does me....

  • it's good to add coconut flakes, flax, sesame, sunflowers and other nuts/seeds to the mix, add some raw cream or raw coconut milk

  • It's possible. I've known anybody to get salmonella from eating a raw egg. I've heard about it from raw chicken plenty of times though.

I eat raw eggs in my protein shakes. I don't use protein powders as most of them are very bad for you. I use four eggs, an apple, and two tablespoons of nut butter. Makes a great shake and has ZERO processed foods.

  • Good advice.

  • I'm weight training so I need 6 small well balanced meals through out the day. I eat unprocessed food. I've always been puzzled about protein shakes. I know it's not a miracle drink, just a meal alternative. I quit eating dairy, and now I'm lactose intolerant. I've been using brown rice powder for my protein shakes. Is whey protein any better? I know it's supposed to be easily digestible, but I don't think it would be for as I do not have the necessary stomach bacteria.

  • Hmm, interesting. Back when you did eat dairy, was it digestible for you? If so, quitting dairy just may have changed your body composition so that you don't have those lactose enzymes that can break down sugar, but I'd estimate that if you DID start eating dairy again, then your body would adapt to that change after an extended period of time. Either that, or I guess you could try some digestive enzymes if they're available.

  • Thanks, I think you make a lot of sense.

  • Well, I'm not a doctor, so I can't say with definite certainty that that's the reason, but this is just a rough estimate from a health-conscious individual. Good luck to you.

  • I have been eating four raw eggs every day for years. Never once had a problem with salmonella. Salmonella is not inside the egg - it's on the shell, where it had contact with the inside of the hen. So to avoid salmonella, I just throw the shell away and only eat what's inside. That works for me.

  • You are so awesome! I'm so happy you're my virtual doctor. It's so nice to hear some who is so dialed in to nutrition and health.

  • Dr. Mercola,

I am a student living in a dorm with a dining hall that I pretty much have to eat at everyday. What should I do when they offer low quality food? (which is almost always)

  • you do not "have to" eat there.. go buy fresh fruits and veggies at the local farmers market or other store that offers locally grown food.. that is my suggestion. :)

  • @OntologicalQuandary same here man, I have adopted a raw food diet, and there is a local place with healthy choices. I never eat in the dining hall...if you want to message me you can I am trying to promote healthy eating in colleges.

  • @theAKtor the secret of a healthy life= aspartame is good, glucamate is good, coke is good, all monsanto poisoned foods and GM are good..FDA says,

poison is good..spend a lot of hours in from of your tv is good...MEDIA SAYS,

talk a lot (cellular ) is GOOD .t-mobile, spring, and others TRUSTED companies said...NOW YOU KNOW THE SECRET......SPREAD THE SECRET...:),,,joke:)

  • "the problems related to dairy"

Yes, plant-based proteins are better for people having problems with dairy proteins. ALL plant proteins are incomplete, and if they state they have a complete profile of amino acids then they were "added" to the hemp protein.

Hemp also doesn't have immune system building proteins like lactoferrin and MANY other subfractions with unique biological properties, only found in whey. Whey is always the BEST quality protein.

  • The only way I eat raw eggs is when they're blended in a drink.

My grandfather used to eat it right out of the shell.

It's difficult to do exercised immediately in the morning. No matter how early I plan on getting up, my 2-yr-old gets up earlier and finds it funny to jump on me while I'm on the floor.

So I get up, go downstairs and wait until my husband gets home from his third-shift-job. I just make sure I don't do anything that can't be interrupted.

  • Only weak people don't workout. Mentally and Physically .

  • Ditto! I've actually exercised on a morning schedule before and it does tend to energize BUT weight lifting, I do not think I could handle - only my Cardio.:)

  • Hemp protein is what is actually DEAD because it is an incomplete protein missing many amino acids.

This electrical charge nonsense is the latest BS hype the hemp protein distributors are pushing in order to sell their inferior product.

Whey protein isolate is made from the curds & whey of the dairy industry. The word "dead" doesn't even apply or make sense here because it IS the best protein source your body can use with a bioavailability over 120 - better than egg whites!

  • my current workout drink is coconut-banana flavored, and not nearly as nutritious. might have to give this a shot. thanks once again, dr. mercola.

  • I get faint if I exercise on empty. Doesn't work for me.

  • me neither, I like having a huge breakfast right after I wake up.

  • You know I had clients with that problem, and I always say to them to follow your intuition. some people their blood sugar is way to low to exercise on an empty stomach.

  • Probably because Americans tend to eat too heavy and it is not ideal to exercise with a full belly. Too much stress on the heart and digestive system.

However, a light breakfast might be better.

  • no but they have hash-browns, aha great vid!
