  • If they did a modern version of this play Kasem G (the guy who plays Borat) would be PERFECT for the role of the police chief.

  • @laughingwarlock Do you mean Sascha Baron Cohen?

  • So for the annual musical my school choir does on of my bestfriends (girl) got the police sergeant

  • INCREDIBLE!

  • This is THE best performance of this tune!

  • @molliecoyle hes soo cool

  • Wow just read all the comments & how nice that Tony was so well appreciated. I never knew he died in the 90's so that was a shock to read & I feel really sad as he had exciting plans for his future. I'm the short cop on the left behind him as we made our entrance through the avenue of trees. He was smashing to work with for nearly 5 months (I think) at Shepperton & wish I'd gone to New York before he died to visit him. Yours Frankie Cull

  • the sergant seems to be made of jelly :)

  • A very enthusiastic and athletic performance (from USA?). As someone who has been 'reared' on the native D'Oyley Carte productions I must say that there is native natural restraint missing that in fact adds to the humour. Trying too hard takes away some of it. Check out some of the UK versions of G&S. Compliments anyway for an interesting post.

  • @oakwoodbank Lol, yea, this was an American movie made back in like 1983. It's my favorite version recorded.

  • For the folks not familiar, it would have been nice in the subtitles to have included both the police and girls partner songs for learning purposes :) (from 3:39 to 4:17ish)

  • I could never ges that he plays mr Addams

  • Very different from my school's play! Lots of extra dancing, and an extra verse! Good thing I won't be doing THAT... LOL

I still can't belive I'm playing the part of the Police Sergant! (a guy by the way... LOL. At least I'm singing normaly, but the guy who sings the police sergant part is talented!

I'm going to be running out of characters soon... LOL.

  • <3 u mr vee

  • It was great! #Tarantara,Tarantara,Tarantara!

    LOVED IT! =D

  • my school is doing this play and i really wanted to be mabel but i got a policeMAN! quote on "man"! lol

  • @themandevilles

From one actor to another: don't let it get to you! In my college's Shakespeare Festival I played a pirate in Act 1 and a policeman in Act 2, and there's a lot of fun to be had in that role. You'll have a great time!

  • @E2theSamps Cool! I'm playing a pirate in act one and Police sergeant in act 2 in our school's production of this! :D

  • @zBoOnerAwSoMeStPeEps My schools Gilbert and Sullivans club has yet to do this play, im making it happen this year.

  • If you can't sing, shout louder.

  • Haha I'm playing a policeman in this musical next week but it would never EVER be as good as this! I love it!

  • I first saw this on cable TV at about 2am. It was highly entertaining and upbeat. I love it! Musically, it's not the traditional Gilbert & Sullivan & the singers are trained in a more Broadway type of singing, but it works, nothing has been radically changed; it makes the operetta very enjoyable, relatable, makes for more interesting personalities, etc. Very great song here, very anti-war too!

  • This is so great, I swear the police are made out of otters in this or something, 4:40

  • @SegaCD What a wonderful image - policemen made of otters! You're exactly right.

  • God, this is awful. I enjoyed this version as a kid, but as an adult I can't stand the bad synth, the non-operatic vocal style, the campy dance routines, and the silliness of the characters. The events in the plot are silly, yes, but the lion's share of the humour stems from the absurd seriousness with which the characters treat those events. These characters behave as though they know they're in a "comedy", and it doesn't work.

  • @kidduffah Good grief. don't hold back, tell us what you *really* think! I mean honestly! I prefer this version to almost every other one I've heard. The whole point of G&S stuff is that it's *Corny* it's supposed to be silly, that what makes it G&S. This version is priceless. Chill.

  • @kidduffah have you ever listened to any of the lyrics? G&S were complete clowns and we love them for it....*most* of us that is. I have never seen a character behave as though they were in a "serious play" and it wouldn't work. A lot of G&S's work was parodies of famous operas. For most of this movie version, except for the song from rudigore is directly from G&S. I'd *love* to see your version of this comedic opera or any other G&S production...it would be a riot.

  • Ah, it was so fun to be a cop in Pirates. XD I loved it so much, but we only had three shows, so I still can't get over it!

  • Tony Azito adds a perfect hint of sophistication and intelligence to this role I havent seen any one else match. Typically the policeman are goofish and embarrassingly stupid. Star quality here for sure! Compare all the other clips of P of P here on youtube and you'll see. Especially the Australian company (dumb policemen dance) . Choreography here though is superb.. Tony was amazing dancer and had a nice singing voice that had to be sillied up considerably for this role. Still the best!

  • As many times as Ive seen Pirates of Penzance, I must say I like Tony Azito's characterization here the best. He presents the sargent with a certain mount of silly, yes, but still intelligent rather than a bumbling akward goofish character. I know it's sattire, but Ive seen the policemen embarrassingly stupid. Check out the dancing in some of the other presentations here on youtube, specificially the out of place clown like dancing in the Australian company. A bit too over done.

  • Haha I love this song, it's my favorite... from my favorite version. I remember singing this and doing the Sergeant's dance when I was little. xD I still do. :P

  • in my school production im the major general and my friends are fredric and the seargeant

  • Sub titles need some attention!

  • @thepitchfinder I don't go to school, it's an activity that I take.

  • im doing this on june 14th... im fredric :3

  • @UchihaManClan good luck on your show

  • @UchihaManClan good luck on your show, i just finished playing the show, i was the sergeant, it was so hard to be funny :P This video is better

  • @bennopian LOL, I JUST DID IT!

  • @thepitchfinder Us too, were doing it in november too! This year too!

  • @SonnierGirls9801 WOAHHH thats trippy! It's like we go to the SAME SCHOOOL!

  • I searched this up, because my acting is doing pirates of penzance in the fall, so I just wanna get a glance of what I'm going to be doing.

  • @SonnierGirls9801 same here! :D our schools putting it on this november

  • In which theatre was that taken?

  • @MrScott8 It wasn't in a theatre. It was filmed as a moive. Google shop it. Its only $8.

  • I remember watching this for the first time and thinking that Frederick might be better off taking the girls!

  • Queen Victoria ordered a cammand performance of what she considered Sullivans masterpiece he thought she meant Ivanhoe and prepared for it when the Queen said to him "I have always loved The Mikado"

  • Lol, I don't think they wanted to go!

  • @GamingMasterErnest That's the idea. They enter brave and pompous and then the daughters manage to scare them to the point of regretting joining the police force.

  • I laughed so hard at 4:41

I just love this play :)

  • @ErikaGOfficial4

AHAHAHA I've seen this at least 10 times, and I've never seen that. Thanks for pointing it out XD

  • This scene is like the inspiration of my life! i love it!

  • i don't understand... i'm the Sergeant in the Opera at my highschool... why is it that MY PART sings base, very deep, but this version sounds like Waluigi? o.O

  • @shadowtrainer92 That was how the role was originally written, for a bass voice.

  • this is what my school is doing for the annual musical and i got cast as a police along with like 5 or 6 other girls....this will be interesting :)

  • Tim Tyler from the 1994 Essgee production tried too hard to be the irreplaceable Tony Azito.

  • @vonnycav You can't compare both of them. I don't think TT was trying to be another TA. He was good in his way but I must admit that TA is better. Still, I enjoyed TT. :))

  • Haha I loved performing this musical. It was fun. ^_^

  • Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, bravo to all the cast, men and women but especially the sergeant Tony Azito. Just rubberman.

  • we did this at school as our play and we sung this song. we're all girls so it sounded well different. we were the police in it lol! tht was in Yr 5. our acting was hilaious aswell!

  • I love Tony Azito's dancing!

  • can i buy this on dvd

  • @BOOBMIT Yep! Just came out in September! Go to Amazon, and Search 'The Pirates of Penzance Kevin Kline'

  • I'm doing this for my Junior High play, I'm a policeman!

  • The Satire in Gilbert and Sullivan is awsome. I love it.

  • the cops just wrecked shit in that song

  • the cops are actually chicks...most of them.

  • We did this play at our Middle School XD

    I loved working there

  • at 1:41 the leader dude puts his hand to stable himself!! FAIL.

  • @leya10089 I think they meant for the Sergeant to do that. He's a bumbling character, it would be fitting.

  • @MagnificentBurger maybe but it's kinda iffy ha

  • @leya10089 Yeah, it could go either way. Hahaha

  • This song is so epic!!!

  • The chief of police is amazing - how does he dance with rubber legs and arms???

  • @ExpertExpat Sergeant, not Chief.

  • video by? video by the movie thank you very much

  • Taran-Taran-Taraaa!

  • Does anyone else think the policemen are drunk?

  • i prefer the song being sung wayyy lower and bassy, but this is gooooodo :)

  • it really bugs me how stanley says lion haerted

  • @ProdigyStepper And dreaded. I had to help my friend over and over by saying Dread Dod, Dread dod, dread dod xP

  • It's like they're made of rubber! Especially the leader!

  • love this movie!!!!!!

  • the policeman sounds like he has a squeaky voice

  • genius hilarity! 'yes but you don't go' omg that's so funny.. lol.. funny cops, hey? haha

  • But they don't go! :)

  • My favorite part is "Damn it! Theyre still here!"

  • @actorstar101 hahahahaa mine toooo.

  • @actorstar101 my favorite part is at 0:00. i keep going back to it after the video is done

  • I LOVE this song! Defiantly one of my favs....:)

  • Got to sing this song as the Sergeant in PIrates last week!!

  • For some reason.. Those officers remind me of the Penguins from Merry Poppins. O.o

  • I played a bobbie. This musical was so much fun.

  • I love it when the girl comes out and sings back to them, rhapsodizing about the horrible death she thinks they'll suffer! HAAHA!

  • fun song, but what a horrible voice Dx

  • Ahh i'm singing this song for both mabel and edith.m ( Choir)

  • The Sergeant.....is THE definition of creepy. I would not be trusting him to protect MY daughters....if I had any.

  • 4:43, didn't notice that until just now, freakin' CLASSIC haha.

  • R.I.P. Tony Azito and George Rose. :(

  • LOVE the way the General says: "Dammit, they don't go". Wish I could be that role.

  • @TheMarkPettitShow Yeah, now he's got an infestation of singing cops on his lawn with no sign of them stopping.

  • i'm one of these in my school's play and this is the exact coreogrophe that we do

  • @jikgds213 the seargent even jumps into the air like that? that`s my favorite part

  • I absolutely LOVE the choreography and the way the words are so cleverly woven together! Great song!

  • I am rather fond of this song! I am a college student in Minnesota and we will be performing this musical in 2 weeks. I am a policeman and I am rather excited to see how everything turns out!!

  • Oh my god, this brings back memories, I too played a policeman and a pirate. It wasn't that cool to be in the school play so we were a bit short. I think our director was Gwen Nyman. It was great fun and will be something to recall when ever life gets complicated. Ah for those wonderful school days

  • got to admit, for an old school rock singer, Linda Ronstadt definitely nailed the role of a soprano... ;)

  • Watching this video: awesome. Writing an assignment about it: best way to make school fun EVER.

  • I honestly don't think I'd mind being caught by these policemen. I'd be laughing too much to resist arrest.

  • My university is doing a version of this operetta right now it is going to be awesome the police are so adorable!!

  • that & the magor modern General are my favorite parts so far!!!!

i'm watching this in music class & this is as far as we have gotten.

  • i was casted a part in the local play pplz.... ;) as bobby of course.!

  • favorite song in the operetta by far. just love the energy of the policemen.

  • I like how the officer keeps telling that the encouragement the daughters are giving is not helping

  • My friend is a cop!! And the seargent.... does sweet dancing!!!!!

  • I GOT THE PART OF A COP :D

  • Where'd you get the widescreen version of this? I checked my VHS and it cuts out a whole lot, downloaded 3 different torrents as well and they were same.

  • @Aelphais my school is doing this musical and I am part of the police as well

    good luck with the part

    xxtarantara

  • Jr version is better :D

  • Also, I'm loving the moves at 4:41

  • I think the Police and the Sergeant are the best people in the Pirates of Penzance lool

  • the problem is, the general gets to sing modern major general, the pirates get to sing with cat like tread, and the cop gets to sing foeman and felon its not easy to decide

  • Comment removed

  • Lol, my 7th grade english teacher's brother in law played the lead cop.

  • FAVORITE SCENE

  • This is not G & S

  • Tony Azito's dancing is AMAZING

  • Tony Azito is great but it's too bad they didn't re-shoot the part where he puts his hand down as Linda Ronstadt is coming in with "Go ye heroes, go to glory." It mars what is otherwise a perfect performance. Also whoever posted this video has recorded it slightly fast. Small but noticeable.

  • still sounds good though.

  • this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie :3

  • It's also one of the hardest to pull off because of all the dance technique involved. Try doing the routine like Tony Azito and singing the role simultaneously and you'll see what I mean.

  • You know, the Irony is that Arthur Sullivan, who wrote the music for these Operettas actually DIDN'T like the Operettas, he thought they were very silly and wanted to be remembered for his other, more serious works.

Ironically, he's remembered for his awesome Operettas!

  • This is very very good. You have every song from "The Pirates of Penzance," but you don't have "Hush, Hush, Not a Word" or "Sighing Softly to the River."

  • I'm in The Pirates of Penzance, but I'm just a pirate, but it's really fun. It's actually my first musical even though I've been in Show Choir and such for a long while.

  • First of all I don't know why "orchestration" is in quotes. And secondly that may be so, but they also made comedies. And when on stage comedies have to be extremely melodramatic. Both in the music and the actors.

  • Dude! Its just an opinion! And the reason orchestration is in quotes is that I, note that I said I, think its rediculous. But I do agree with what you've

  • Well that's because it should. This is the film adaptation of the Broadway adaptation of the actual opera.

  • I realise that. I don't think G&S would approve of this at all. If you want G&S look at th D'oyly carte company or Opera australia

  • The D'oyly carte recording of this is sung out of tune...

  • I think if I ever starred in Pirates of Penzance, I'd definitely want to be either the Sergeant or Pirate King...but most likely the Sergeant!

  • I love the way things are worded in Gilbert and Sullivan

  • The Sergeant is the best role in this play. Period, it is by far the most fun

  • I disagree. The General is the most fun to play.

  • the only time I saw ths, I was too young to remember. But just by listening to the songs, I can tell I want the sargent roll. If this is Tony Azito (I'm sorry, I remember names better than faces) then yes, he truly is a master, this would be my first-pick roll.

  • i just got the role of the sergent in my school play, wasn't sure if it was good until now :D

  • This is the best Penzance EVER! It is almost addicting. Tony Azito (RIP) is such a classic Keystone Kop Sergeant.... Someday I would like to play this part, but alas, there's no following Tony!

  • It is Ive watched this thousands of time (video and play)

  • One of our local operatic societies is doing Pirates of Penzance at Christmas - my mum is taking me to see it, I can't wait!

  • I love this song. It makes me smile because when the policemen enter. They look like penguins. Oh now I am going to have this stuck in my head.

  • I can't help but chuckle at this song it never fails to bring a smile to my face. The sarge looks like he want to break dance at certain points :P

  • 2:55 nazi girls lol

  • TARANTARA !!!!!!!!

  • This seargeant is pretty darn scary

  • GOD, I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • @martythetickler Who DOESN'T love this song?

  • What the heck is an "emeute?"

  • It means "an uprising or a riot"...

  • An emeute is like a coup or a riot or uprising etc.

Oh and I love the sergeant in this. Wonderful performer!!!!!

  • Tony Azito is God. :-p

  • @aladouche5 Tony Azito owned this role! No one, anywhere, did it better! Those rubbery arms and legs were hilarious and his characterization was incomparable.
