Dear Splinter: you cannot do that with a sharp edged knife, bolo...you'll get cut! During the years of transition from sharp weapons to sticks, many things got lost by fake escrima masters...you can affort things with a stick, which you cannot do with a bolo...train more, read more, think for yourself, be critical with an open mind...

yeah, the escrima is supposed to represent a bolo or machete. You can't grab those in the middle or on both ends like that.

I pray to God that these students won't be put in harms way by handling the stick like that and opening your hands while doing that fancy twirling. Against an experienced Eskrimador, Arnisador or Kalista he would be disarmed in a blink of an eye.

we nevetr open our hands either but i think its for exercise to get one whole with the stick like jedi sword..anyway .. i do avcı escrima.. yes never let the stick go but sometimes u can drill like this to soften your tired muscles.

I also practice eskrima but in our system we do not let go of the stick, we do not twirl it in such a way that the hand releases the stick.

Was he Twirling in the application demo at the end? No.

Twirling serves several purposes, lossening the wrist in warm up, developes figure 8 patterns for empty hand/disarms, reversing short blades, etc..

You can get away with somuch talk on Youtube, its silly.
