  • Yeah, Trey destroys Clapton on this one. I feel sorry to say it too but he simply does.

Trey can't play with the emotion of Clapton? Trey bends up a minor third WHILE trilling. The emotion that evokes is greater (imo) than anything Clapton did with this solo.

  • holy shit its jerry

  • the reba from this night is gold also

  • This is what George Harrison meant.

  • Why would anyone even respond to the tool thats been talking all the shit, lol

  • WOW, I was blown away listening to this =) Love my Beatles but these guys did it right!!!!

  • Dude btw ,just ignore the jerkoff TopTen guy. He's been trolling this video for like at least a month, fuck man, what a fucking loser bahahahahah.... he's just trying to piss off people so ignore him. We know Phish is the bees knees so that's all that matters.

  • Jealous trolls are jealous. Rofl...

  • romantic

  • Soulless solo says who?

  • The best version of this song, ever.

  • Yea this is definitely better than the original! He murders that solo way harder!

  • @eazybleezy

    hahahahahahahahahahahaha nope.

  • Phish blows

  • @Alos21 are you nuts? well i guess theres no point in asking i feel bad for you

  • @VermontDays wow.. your level of immaturity is amazing! and anyways, if you dont like phish, why are you even watching this?

  • @Alos21 You blow

  • Comment removed

  • Never liked Phish until now. Amazing solo. I have to try to learn this version.

  • totally solid but simply isn't George and the Beatles with their own amazing magic....musically maybe its better, but its not the LADS!!

  • clearly he doesnt give a shit if he was wearing a shirt or a fuckin carpet with a hole through it, im sure Phish would read your comment laugh his ass off then hit up good will

  • Comment removed

  • @shaun3701 and your clearly a new generation kid that that thinks image goes before the music, go listen to fag beiber , queer

  • Comment removed

  • @shaun3701 32 years old and sitting on youtube making stupid ass comments

  • He came several times...

  • yeah rad! You nailed it!

    People have no idea anymore

  • Amazing!

  • i hate to say it but that was better than Clapton..

  • @TheSuperwest36 with music like this and the beatles and clapton, there are no comparisons of quality, only heart and soul as well as mutual respect. i think they do it different, but not necesarily better. But hey, it's Phish and it's kickass. can I get a thumbs

  • @TheSuperwest36

why would anybody hate saying that? trey mops the floor with clapton

  • @TheSuperwest36

You're a fucking stupid prick if you actually think that. I'd like to see these fucknobs actually write anything even remotely good on their own.

  • @TopTenCrew

Dirt, Farmhouse, Bug, Wading in The Velvet Sea. I could go on but I don't want to sound like a douchebag

  • @TheSuperwest36

I hate to say it but you're not even close to right.

  • its great, dont get me wrong, but nothing beats erics woman tone, weeping never sounded as weeping as when eric played it it on a gibson.

his woman tone was something to behold.

clapton from 66 to 68, from the bluesbreakers to cream, is the only guy who can stand side by side with 68 to 70 hendrix (before jimi did too much rely on studio solos, only in 68 he completely freed himself from them).

listen to any steppin out by cream from 66 or 67, klooks kleek london is prob my fave.

  • @TheSuperwest36 Why would you hate to say it? Clapton is like the most overrated guitarist ever

  • TREY THE GOD OF COVER SONGS!! THIS SHIT IS STUNNING <3 better than the original.

  • Best sleves ever? haha

  • @Hunsanity I could watch this video...no sound...and appreciate it just as much (more?)...those sleeves are epic.

  • trey shredded that solo into 13 different pieces, burned it and let its smoke rise up to heaven to let george witness its majesty. R.I.P. Harrison

  • This is butchered

  • @TopTenCrew Just like your musical sense.

  • @Luke139

No, sorry. This is just a shit cover. Phish can play their own shitty music- leave legends alone please.

  • @TopTenCrew You have to be either joking or trolling right now. If you think this is shit then you're an absolute retard.

    Can you play this better?

  • @Luke139

    Yes.

  • @TopTenCrew I really doubt that.

Care to record it and send it to me? I'd love to see.

  • @Luke139

No, not at all. You listen to Phish, I mean really. You don't know shit.

  • @TopTenCrew Phish has done more musically than any band in the last 30 years. You don't know shit about music. Goodnight.

  • @Luke139

    hahahahahah good joke.

seriously, phish is shit. nobody likes them. theyre in my top 100 worst artists of all time.

  • @TopTenCrew Yep, "nobody" could possibly like Phish if they're in YOUR 100 worst artists. In the description of your top ten best guitar leads video, you say that it's "Only my opinion. Don't flame if you don't agree, please." Well, your opinion is shit and you're not only a pretentious douchebag, but a hypocrite, too.

Comments on your profile show what a sweet life you've got. 98% chance that you're a 50 yr old guy living in his mother's basement surrounded by used kleenex and several cats.

  • @dhaselton

Right. But, still the fact remains- nobody likes Phish.

  • @TopTenCrew yup no one likes phish, they just manage to tour for 25 years selling out arenas like MSG every time.

  • @BillMonroeSt

Nah, that's a false statement. They've never sold out MSG, nor anywhere close to as big. Stop lying please, it's hurting this shitty band's rep even more.

  • @TopTenCrew Ummm...yeah, they have. 1994 - sold out both MSG and Boston Garden

  • @daytripper270

    Nope.

  • @TopTenCrew uhh, you're dumb?? can I get some tickets for 12/30 and 12/31 if it's not sold out please

  • @TopTenCrew Idk if youre actually serious or not but they sell out MSG every year...

  • @TopTenCrew what a fucking doosh you are! the biggest concert phish has ever played was to a crowd of 85000.

  • He's playing BOTH parts: Clapton & Harrison's part... very dank

  • Trey shreds on guitar,I love you Phish!

  • this is what reaffirms my belief that trey is a guitar god. his knowledge of scales and the fretboard is unbelievable.

  • this is great

  • my god what a shred

  • this is ridiculous; congrats to the beatles for the original, but dot dot dot

  • this is just..................MADE OF LOVE.

    NOT JUST WIN, BUT LOVE.

AND to all you haters and n00bs: dont like it, dont FUCKIN WATCH.

i can't stay mad with this song on! lol

  • you're out of your element jojo, you're out of your element. he shredded that solo so hard. best version of this song ever recorded. thank you.

  • @johnsandlisa. Do your homework buddy. You said Clapton never played with any soul or feeling. That solo WAS Eric Clapton himself. Trey is playing Eric's solo very well. Look it up. Harrison invited Clapton into the studio to lay down that track. Look it up

  • God Himself couldn't have played it this well!

  • Beautiful rendition of a classic! Thank you Trey!

  • The lead is incredible Trey channeled up The Beatles for this fascinating solo, live it Love it, Peace

  • such emotion, truly amazing, this is the best version, no matter what anyone else says

  • How can anybody say Phish sucks? Maybe its not there type of music or style or what ever but jesus come on Trey is regauded as the best guitarist of our generation!!

  • @ThePhish420 By who other than phish fans?

  • clapton is god... just kidding trey trey trey!

  • If I hear one more douche bag say "Clapton is God" , I'm gonna lose it. Trey pawns him here. Clapton has never played anything with that much feeling and emotion and dont let that stupid look on his face fool you. Clapton is the most overrated guitarist on the planet. Keep sucking clapton's dick, fanboys. It's amazing how a guy that puts out mediocre blues music and plays the same blues scales and riffs is considered a guitar legend. Trey can play like anybody, but nobody can play like Trey

  • @johnsandlisa Bro you make this statement about''sucking claptons dick"" it sure sounds like if you saw trey walking down the road and he came over to you and asked you to blow him on the spot you would not think twice. You sound like nothing more than a fucking blowhard trying to sound like you know music. And that line trey can play like anybody etc.etc. fuck you. And i am not saying that trey can't play what i am saying is you sound like a complete asshole.

  • @johnsandlisa

    amen

  • @jojojigaboo if they blow and have no talent why is Trey on the list of greatest guitar players ever?

  • fuck what people say.

this is one of my favorite solos ever.

and i dont even listen to phish.

  • these guys really blow

i tried listening to a few covers as well as their material and they are just lousy -

    mediocre at best

nothing original or unique about them at all.

    no talent hacks

  • @jojojigaboo hahahah i see you on every one of phish's videos talkin shit just admit your love for this band ounce and for all your deadhead friends actually like phish to their just to scared to show it

  • @jojojigaboo oh yeah whats wrong with it??? its sounds fucking spot on to me you music noob

  • and i jizzed in my pants.

  • gotta hand it to 'stash.....he is playin the harrison leads and the rythm and even some keyboard licks from the original beatles tune....their tunes are silly b ut i admire them as musicians

  • Perfect

  • This is in Trey's top 5 solos ever IMO... Anyone who thinks they butchered it doesn't know a thing about music or about Phish's approach to music.

  • Teared me up, goose bumps, art, love, why we exist and what being human is all about.

  • in the last solo, he takes the appearance of a demi-god, something of Hercules' level, and he rides the great white steed of fucking excellence into the pearly gates and fluffy white clouds of heaven as he shits on jesus himself and any person who attempts to pick up a guitar. aka, it blew my mind.

  • @anthonyBleakney blew my mind when i was blazed. good shit man.

  • @anthonyBleakney Bro trey has not seen his wife for a little while it sounds like you would give him that blowjob he needs. or maybe you already have. You do realize what an asshole you sound like don't you ? If not read it over a couple times and after you do you should feel like that asshole you are.

  • languendoc guitar + 2 tube screamers + ross compressor + fender blues delluxe = the best lead guitar tone in history

  • Damn! He is SMOKIN' during the end solo!

  • that solo busts my nuts.

  • In this and divided sky, treys overly large shirt and mushroom like hair almost make him look like some sort of mystical guitar playing creature that is not of this earth

  • trey nails it. insanely wel done.

  • mike drops bombs.

  • what a gem of a guitar solo...my favorite guitarist ever

  • He does a pretty sick interpretation of Clapton's solo.

  • way to rock it trey you always were the beatles fan....and the dead of course

  • Comment removed

  • Dude this is the best cover of any beatles song I have ever heard. Hands down...Phish never stops suprising me.

  • Does anyone know where i could get the tabs for the 2nd solo? its freakin amazing!

  • You could try praying to god, he MIGHT know like part of it...

  • @supergeek48 The tabs to that solo are inscribed upon the back of a locket that is placed gently in a box and buried deep beneath the roots of a tall tall tree that grows out of the MIND OF GOD

  • i love treys voice, it may not be the greatest but he is still a good singer, plus his guitar trumps all

  • yes. that version is AWESOME. prince tears it up!

  • Comment removed

  • WOW!!!--- While My Guitar Gently Weeps is one of my favorite Beatles songs, and to hear Phish play it!!! The 90's in my opinion, were the best Phish years. I have a recording of Phish covering the White Album but this is an awesome performance.

  • It just so happens that this is the same version.

  • Ok....It makes me so sad to see people saying this was butchered....Actually this solo is so driven and inspired he absolutely shreds this up, Not played note for note as harrison or clapton played it. This is awesome!!!! So to all of you newbs and to those haters, Please go back to your justin timberlake, shakira, miley cyrus, and leave the real music (phish) alone to us and also YOU JUST GOT pwned!!!!!!!!

  • @Veggiefried420 i see no where on the page where someone said this sucked... and your a total fag

  • @Veggiefried420 This is the greatest version of this song ever

  • @Veggiefried420 neh his timing is off multiple times throughout the song. So i give this a 6 at best. You cant compare to clapton and prince when you cover this shit.

  • @PinkFloyd793 / Look up the article where Clapton is aked how it feels to be the greatest guitar player in the world. Simple answer ask Trey from Phish

  • @Veggiefried420 ok talk all the shit you want about miley cyrus and justin timbberfake....but shakira. One of the hotttest fucking people alive man, take another look. her hips dont lie

  • @yoleonardyo lol

  • This version sounds more similar to the one on "Live in Japan". The vocals sound more Clapton then Harrison to me. Nonetheless, a worthy tribute.

  • What the hell are you talking about hes sick at singing live and this is a dynamite cover as are most every other one

  • Man...1994 - I was at this show, and it's a standout musical memory. When they started the White Album...indescribable...

Red Rocks, The Warfield, two complete Gamehendge saga shows, the Fox Theater in Atlanta, the New Years run...

Those of us who knew where to be in 1994 were at Phish shows as often as possible :)

    See y'all at Festy 8!

  • btw, best light shows ever (only pink floyd can compare) Ty Kurado

  • Phish doesn't do a cover unless they can nail it. And they nail it (in their phantastic way) everytime; their take always gives me insite on the original. You ever hear 'em do Prince or ZEP? Talking Heads? Their takes & twists are phantastic. How 'bout phish with jayZ. I hope they bring out a suprise guest in costume. I love this band. Anything they do will delight me. SO excited for festival 8.

(The musical nature & language of phish is universal! bring your costume :)

  • in trey we trust

  • phish will play an entire album front to back on Halloween sets, this being said if they don't do a perfect job on a particular album, who cares. If I hear a phish cover it's most likely not going to do the song any justice I would have loved to see them play this album, my favorite band playing an awesome beatles album.

  • of all the beatles albums to cover, the white album is the most impossible, especially vocally. and after watching all this videos, my ears are bleeding. as is my heart. phish should stick to their own songs instead of desecrating what could arguably be the greatest album of all time.

  • You know, I have to actually agree with you. Phish are awesome and have an insanely large repertoire, but their covers are often rather... bad. I love their original music, though. But live, Trey can't sing worth a darn.

  • "but live, trey can't sing worth a darn."

    newb!

  • evenin nighthawk!

Phish is awesome, i agree! I believe their covers are suberb! i LOVE WHAT THEY CHOOSE~

  • @Nighthawk551 except that hes harmonizing perfectly you dumbass

  • My God he makes it look so easy!

  • Talk about a great song by a great band!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • What I wouldnt give to be 16 again!

  • Good version ... liked it.

Just want to add to this conversation what is going on here, that Trey is shredding here... hmmmm .... no not really.

He is mostly playing pentatonic scale all the time here.

And only player who i consider shredder in pentatonics is J McLaughlin.

And i like to add that i really liked Treys solo.

  • I went around youtube and watch a bunch of diffrent verisions of this song

This one is of course the BEST OF THEM ALL

  • I love people who think Phish sucks..... It leaves more room for me at there shows!

  • thee only better version is clapton and elton john

  • do some more drugs trey you junkie scum. phish sucks. cant wait for them to break up and re-unite again. BORING

  • trey is so messed up

  • this is so amazing

  • WOW

  • trey is disgusting

  • Comment removed

  • You're right. Trey IS disgusting.. Disgustingly AMAZING.

  • You should try looking up the definition of Ironic or Irony. lawl.

  • Ironically, that shirt is making me weep.

  • It was Halloween..possible a costume?

  • enough...cant compare the two versions, but this is just ridiculous....and to say you know millions of guitarists better than this guy....simply not possible!! And if you wanna talk about guys being recognized...you have no idea wht he has done for music since the early 90's....go listen to the white album, Ill watch this any day....

  • I agree, you can´t compare versions. I said I personally know dozens of great (unsigned) musicians, therefore there must be many more....etc. I was criticising the people who think this guy is the best,.not him personally. He´s not bad at all - but he´s not better than the original in my opinion. That´s all I was saying. Cheers!

  • You are joking surely - there are a few out of tune notes in here .54-.56, 2.57, 4.38, (OK, it´s live) sure he sings and plays generally well, but better than Clapton and Harrison? Come on kids, this song made music history!! There are a million players who play better than this guy. As for blowing Beatles out of the water - that was in the 1960s and noone had done it before - this guy has all the advantages of 2008 and still plays very average, Just my opinion.

  • average? you are surely joking... go see a show, even if you are not impressed by the music, i would imagine you will be impressed by their muscianship. i agree, i think it's a bit difficult to compare the beatles and phish. different eras, different type of music. clapton, harrison and yes trey are great guitarists. there are not a million guys better than this one. just my opinion.

  • there are not a million guys better than this one.

Again, it depends on whether you're talking about feel or technical skill, but you'd be surprised at how many unknowns that just play in the privacy of their bedrooms can do things with a guitar that Trey would likely have a difficult time with. As an example, take a look at "stairway to heaven 9 fingers tapping polyphonic."

  • I have to agree, I just recently discovered phish and was surprised at how versatile trey is. I was getting bored of today's bands either trying to shred your face off with technicality or relying on standard power chord riffs and stage attitude. I'm glad i could find a band with feeling thats more reminiscent of 60's and 70's rock bands rather than the horrible sterile and sythesized music of the 80's.

  • Certainly not average. Geetar im assuming you play because of your name, but you clearly dont know much about live playing if you think a million guys can play better than him. Go check out the Reba from this show also.

  • I have nothing against him, just that I personally know dozens of players who are better than him (and better than me: ) But that doesn´t matter. I don´t want to criticise him at all, more the people who think he´s better than Clapton etc. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion.Clapton isn´t my favourite by a long way, but his contribution to the state of modern guitar should be recognised. If people think THIS guy is better, they should widen their CD collection. Cheers!

  • Again, he is more technically skilled than Clapton as far as the various forms he can play - blues, jazz, bluegrass - unless Eric's been hiding some of his prowess from us all these years. Though, I'll have to say, geeter, that they are BOTH more impressive than George - not to knock George - he worked fantastically with the Beatles and it's too bad in ways that they didn't allow him to contribute more, but again - unless he was hiding something from us,..

  • I checked out Reba as you suggested which was very good, a completely differnt standard - I enjoyed it. Much better than his version of "....Gently Weeps".

  • Time to get your head out of your ...

This is the best version by far.

    Nothing comes close.

  • I have extracted my head - thanks for the advice. I prefer versions by Jeff Healey, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker. It´s just a matter of taste. As I said, this guy isn´t bad, but in my opinion it´s not the best. I respect your opinion but disagree. I can do that without being rude as I am an adult. Cheers!

  • Saying it's the best version is nonsense; it's an impressive cover and it was a tremendous undertaking to cover the album in it's entirety - I doubt anyone else would bother to try it (just like no one else but Phish would attempt to do Freebird a capella in it's entirety as Phish did!). But if Phish were to actually try and record this, it's unlikely they'd come anywhere close to the magic that only the Beatles could create in the studio.

  • 3:42-3:52, especially the note at 352 is anything but average. P.S. Clapton is very overrated.

  • Yes, that´s a nice note, with a pre bend and a slight harmonic. I don´t want to take anything away from him but that´s not difficult, anyone who plays reasonably well can do that. But as I said - nothing against him (really!) just annoys me when people say silly things about the original bands - without whom none of us would be having this conversation in the first place. Thanks for not being so rude like some other contributors:) Cheers !

  • I think a couple of important notes should be made:

1st: this is a 4 person band. I rarely (if ever) see a live version of this song without a rhythm guitar player AND a lead (or several) lead guitar players.

2nd: This song is about emotion and energy (to me), and not about technical achievments. Sometimes the "correct" or "best" note isn't a difficult note to play.

  • I totally agree with you.

  • he is a great guitar player, clapton has a better voice tho.

  • yeah but page has a better voice than either. eh hee.

  • This debate seems to be about feel vs. technical difficulty. Clapton plays with a feel that very few - including Trey - would be able to emulate. If we're talking about technical difficulty, I'll bet even Clapton would tell you he couldn't play some of the stuff Trey plays. On the other hand, calling Trey the best is just as ridiculous, as he would surely have trouble playing others' leads, such as Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs.

  • I believe that Trey is able to shred but rarely chooses plays that way. You can verify this if you dig deep enough in their live material.

This is a claim that people make about a lot of guitarists, but I think it only applies to a rare few, with Trey being one of them.

Rivers Cuomo from Weezer, Chad Kroeger from Nickelback and Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins being three others where it is known and verifiable through video/audio that they had a shredder past.

  • I actually didn't even have any form of the word shred in my mind when I brought up Morse. He's much more than those that are considered shred gods - Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen. I don't think any of those guys, nor Trey, have the amazing compositional skills Steve has.

  • nickelback...thats almost funny

  • @mah38900 I can feel you some on the others, but please don't ever relate Phish to Nickelback in any manner again.
