The Sassy demo has never been played PJ. I often got records autographed, and still do where possible. As they only cost £1 or so at the time, it didn't seem a big deal. Besides, I had/have no real intention to sell 'em. Meeting and getting a particular hero's autograph was always a real buzz... and hang the auction price I say! It was all part of the experience. Let future collectors make their own! :-))
I never saw black with silver, but that doesn't mean it didn't come that way. This record has three variations that I know of and from what I've learned all came out around the same time.
@PJDooWop Hmm... I may well be confusing the label with a bootleg of "If That's What You Wanted", which I think had a facsimile black/silver 'Liberty Bell' label. (Oh NO! My once phenomenal memory for useless trivia is finally fading!) ...still, it WAS some 35 years ago!
I definitely had this side though, 'cos I have it listed as a "sold" item and it was quite cheap - but, like so many sides, I shouldn't have let it go. :-(
Yeah. Some records are pricey because they are in demand, and some are pricey because they are truly rare. There are some that I post that I'd think you'd have a hard time tracking down, but there are plenty I post that you'll find multiple copies on ebay at any given time.
Never seen this label variation before, it's a later pressing... originals had the original label address and didn't mention Dart Record Sales Corp, 2nd pressings had the original label style and address but also mentioned Dart Record Sales Corp on the label. Is this copy a chicago pressing? the label print makes me think so (plus every other 45 ive seen distributed by DRSC seems to have the same kind of print style and I think they were from that area).
Thanks for giving me some insight. I'm pretty sure this is a Chicago pressing (the labels sure as hell look Chicago.) I was also under the impression that the copies with the bell on them were before this, but wasn't sure. I'm thinking maybe this was put out around the time the other variation was put out that mentions Dart.. This would be the midwest/west coast equivelant.
This song is terrific!!! In fact it exist two other versions, one by Jay J Jones (V-TONE)and the other by Lloyd Nolan (KING) under the name of "I don't know about you".
The first one is as faster than this one and the other is more a kind of deep soul... Two terrific tracks too!!!
Slap me in the face and call me red! I never knew this was Frankie Beverly until this very moment. I like this song, and always thought, MAN, THIS DUDE IS REALLY SINGING!
Frankie Beverley's Early recording - If thats what you wanted, cut with The Butlers .A1Class Smash Northern Soul Monster Stomper ~ Soul Power Success Sound !!
@PJDooWop I had two copies of "If That's What You Wanted" on Sassy (demo and red issue) @£1 each from a DJ friend who bought them directly from Billy Jackson in 1977/78. A few years later I got the demo copy autographed by Frankie Beverly - thus halving it's current commercial value I guess! LOL
That Sassy 45 is in such demand that if your copy is near mint I don't think the autograph would take half away.. A lot depends on the collector. Yes, some would say that an autograph defiles the record but for some collectors it adds mystique. I wouldn't be surprised if you put it up on ebay if you were able to get 75% of its market value
18 years old and this group was right in there with its elders & the sound of the times. GLADNESS means: Experiencing pleasure, joy or delight, pleased, very willing, pleasant, joyful, cheerful. He brings his St.corner (OURS A GIFT)
Music heals, connects. 25 mph turns to
45 mph Desire Endure . They can roll into town sing with a big HUH. Don't
Thanks for the kind words. I'm a huge 60's Frankie Beverly fan as well. I'll post more stuff by them and if you need help finding their records I'll point you in the right direction
My best suggestion would be to try Val Shively (R&B records in Upper Darby). All of the Butlers stuff is rare. This one took me 13 years to locate. Lovable Girl on the Guyden label is great. Laugh Laugh Laugh on the Phila label is another good rare one. Their stuff on Fairmont is good as well.. Their rarest 45s are probably the two on the Sassy label.
I have this as a re-issue on the Lost Nite(local Philly) label bought at the old Record Museum in Philly many years ago....i wonder if anyone like Collectibles has bought up the catalogue of these fabulous old recordings?
A DJ/record dealer friend of mine got a box full of Sassy label copies of "If That's What You Wanted" from Billy Jackson C.1977/78. He let me and a friend have both demo and issue copies for £1 each! I later had the demo autographed by Frankie Beverly (thus lowering it's current value by half no doubt!) Unlike "She Tried To Kiss Me" however, I still have them and wouldn't part with them. I'd still like one on Gamble though...
The first time I heard this, Bob Pantano played it on his Saturday Night Dance Party...a Philly/South Jersey oldies tradition for more than 30 years...
Anyway, I was like "Where the hell has that song been?"
It's just funk everywhere!!!!!!!!!!

Nice one PJ. I had this one many, many years ago (C.1974/5), but sold it. I thought my copy was black with silver type though?
