MD-11 is very unstable at low speed. bcoz it has shorter tail fin. one fedex crashed in tokyo recently might be due to similar winds, or maybe some windsheer.

great piece of engineering MD-11 is! anyhow, landing at kai tak puts to shame some like 10 european rollercoasters! crosswinds kinda suck, but when you're in the cockpit the only way that matters is to get your bird safely at the gate! great video. 5/5

dude the opposite wing takes off all the main pressure on the gear for only a sec so if the left gear touches first that is the way u r suppose to land in a crosswind like that by putting in the crosswind correction landing roll and i know all this stuff because i am a pilot it was great landing in that conditions 5/5

MEMO to the Dutch tool who posted in: Did you even bother to watch the entire video? If you are competent in the world of aviation perhaps you'd like to see the speed at which the tire residue crossed across the runway. This was actually a top landing taking note of the old Kai Tak crosswinds.

You need to learn your facts. Pan Am couldn't have seen anyone as the backtaxied on the runway as the airport visibility was at minimums. The main cause of that accident was an impatient KLM pilot. By the way he was KLM's best pilot even in their ads.

What was a really "go-around" manouver. Pilot should never have tried to land such unstable control of the plane..

Ordinarily, they'd be able to use ILS. However, at the old Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport, the approach for the runway involved a last-minute 45 degree turn - and ILS can only go straight. They had "IGS" - an instrument approach that vectored the plane in for the turn, but the pilots had to make the turn manually. And with a heavy crosswind, things could get a little... hectic.

Heads up peeps. This is how MOST aircraft pilots GA or VFR are trained to land in crosswinds. Most of you who DONT fly have no idea what it is like to land in a crosswind. Also, there is no need for VISUAL sighting of wind, out on the runway is a different matter.

You can see the left rudder being applied to yaw the aircaft back towards the runway centreline. This is being done as the aircraft is very close to the ground, and any bank to the left would risk ground contact.

Very little crosswind observed at the surface, however it may have been stronger higher up thus accounting for the aircraft being displaced to the right of the runway centreline.

Safest option would have been to go around and have another go.

Even with a crosswind landing he should still be in alignement with the runway - he wasn't. He was way to far left. That was a terrible landing and he should have gone around. He was lucky to get away with it, not skillful.
