  • What's wrong with me.. I heard this and think about Tom and Jerry. :(

  • My partner "sings" the chorus to this song when he's happy.

    My partner is tone deaf!

  • Watch her in 'I Remember Mama' a lovely film and a lovely performance from Irene...

  • Thank you for posting this, it is simply delightful.

  • Amazing the embarrassment of riches in Hollywood between the First and Second World Wars! To think this gorgeous and talented artist was one of so very many. A true Golden Age.

  • OMG! THIS IS THE KIND OF MUSIC IM LOOKING FOR!! I CANT FIND ANYTHING CLOSE TO THIS KIND OF MUSIC NOWDAYS!

  • I wish singers these days could sing like this.

  • Oh my goodness - why she never won an Academy Award I will never know. Absolutely fabulous!

  • she was an awesome actress, hollywood is not the same anymore

  • nice also to know who jerome kern's favourite male singer was!

  • i can understand why listening to the song why mgm named their remake after this song

  • Heavenly!

  • I saw Penny Serenade last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. A superbly made tearjerker.

  • Wasn't the Acting just great. It was among Irene Dunne's best she was great in Back Street!

I think Grant's best Dramatic Roll.

  • I have just discovered her and what are some of her best movies or are all great. The only movie I have seen her in is Roberta. I liked the scene where she was singing smoke gets in your eyes and the heart breaking look. I thought it was well acted. She did a good job in the movie over all. Love the video. She is very lovely lady.

  • You are in for a real treet as you discover her in each and every movie. I believe there are some digitally enhanced DVD's on Amazon, well worth the price, which is very reasonable. I would buy Penny Serenade and Roberta from TCM though!

The Awful Truth is great it comes on TCM every now and then!

  • @lizzyvance many of her movies are available at TCM and Amazon. Also many of them have been digitally inhanced. Two will be on TCM in June.

  • for me, Irene Dunne has a particular mix. Sweet ,vibrant, somehow slightly moody eyes and incredibly catchy, smiling sexy mouth (mostly because the way her tongue lies down)

  • Irene DUnne--- TRULY so lovely to look at... *sigh!*

  • Loved Irene Dunne in Showboat. Fred conducting the orchestra is elegant, even doing nothing. Randolph Scott- gayer than a goose!

  • I found love .

  • Truly lovely, indeed!!!

  • Thank you for posting this delightful clip from Roberta!

  • The gown is by Bernard Newman. Form Joplin, Missouri.

  • Thank you for that info!

  • really thanks for telling me I'm from there!

  • She looks so beautiful at 1:35 on the time line! I want to see it in color!

  • Too bad it was filmed in black and white.

  • NO WAY!! The Silver Screen! Makes her look almost transfigured with that glow and spark that only B & W have!

  • Maybe some day. I have .....Penny Serenade, My Favorite Wife and I Remember Mama all colorized.

Together Again will be out in a box set on August 4 th. this will be the first time I will see a decent copy!

  • I would love to see it in color. I have Penny Serenade and My Favoriye Wife in color!

  • Wow! Where can I see Penny Serenade in color? I think Irene Dunne looks so attractive in that movie.

  • I love Penny Serenade! Where can I see it in color?!

  • Randolph Scott's character John Kent may possibly be one of the models used to create another character created about this time, Clark Kent.

  • She also had a hit record with this song.

  • Irene Dunne was one of my favorite actresses. Not only was she an incredible actress but she was a highly gifted soprano.

  • -not to mention, 'lovely to look at'..! ;o)

  • One of my favorite Irene Dunne movies. Just love herAnd Fred and Ginger and Randol[h Scott

  • Thank You for posting this clip I showed it to my elderly aunt on my laptop in the nursing home and she was in tears she just loved Irene Dunne!!! I also think she was great.

  • Thanks Ross, that made my day. Say "hi" to your aunt for me. I used to do volunteer work at a nursing home, and it just broke my heart every time I had to say goodbye.

  • if someone asks you what art is,show them this video..THIS is true art!!

  • Wow. Fred Astaire and Irene Dunn. What a combo! Love them both!

  • Thank you for posting this clip. I was watching late night TV and discovered this film. I believe there is a scene before Irene's song, when they have a parade of women wearing fabulous gowns. I know this sounds strange, but one of those gowns is exactly what I want to wear on my wedding day. Lovely film, thanks again for the upload.

  • Thanks for the nice comment. One of those models in that scene was a young Lucille Ball. She was good friends with Ginger Rogers and had bit parts in Roberta, Top Hat, and Follow the Fleet.

  • Yes and in one of the gowns is a very young Lucille Ball! Lucy adored Irene Dunne....she was in The Joy Of Living with her.

  • oh thats funny she had to have a body guard follow her because of the dress!

By the way, she sings beautifully!=)

  • Wow... Irene Dunne is so... perfect! She's one of the loveliest singers ever! And she is so beautiful! I WANT her dress for my wedding!

  • I just love Irene!! She's awesome

  • she should have been in follow the fleet, I LOOVED her in this MOVIE!! this movie ROCKED!!

  • Irene was offered "Follow the Fleet" and turned it down. She certainly would have done a lot more with that role than Harriet Hilliard. On the other hand, 1936 saw Irene as Magnolia Ravenal in "Show Boat" and her first screwball comedy role in "Theodora Goes Wild". I wish she could have done all three roles, but if she had to turn one down, Connie Martin was probably the weakest of the three.

  • I wish she hadn't turned that role down!! Harriet really SUCKED in the movie!! they gave her a makeover in the movie and yet..she lokked the SAME!! thank God for ginger and fred or the movie wouldn't be worth watching!!

  • Irene Dunne was an exquisite beauty for the ages. She exuded kindness and grace.

  • I just love Irene -- what a beautiful, classy lady ! At home in dramas, musicals and my favorite comedies of all time !

Thanks - this was wonderful to watch !!

  • Thanks for the comment! Doris Day was a pretty amazing talent as well - great looking, sweet personality, a solid actress, and one heck of a big band singer!

  • Jimmy McHugh was also wrote lyrics to this song.

  • Fields and McHugh were a team prior to her partnership with Kern. However, in that songwriting team, Fields always wrote the lyrics while McHugh composed the music. Fields did these lyrics for Kern by herself - in fact, you can read about the composition of this song on the Dorothy Fields website. I'm not trying to slight McHugh - six of my 100 videos are McHugh songs, but this one is not.

  • That's Fred Astaire conducting the orchestra down there.

Irene Dunne is wonderful as always in this clip. The song speaks only too well

  • thank you, i thought it was Fred, but i wasn't sure

  • What clarity!

  • Very romantic, thrilling scene. Irene Dunne is at her best. Thank you for sharing this lovely treasure.

  • Isn't Irene Dunne wonderful.

  • anyone have lyrics for this version w/ the intro?

  • they always had these cute teeth back then, with little tiny spaces inbetween

  • She was indeed lovely to look at, and fantastically talented.

  • Wow. She is so great, and this song is so beautiful. Do you have the scene where "Kern's favourite male singer" reprises the song? :) He's such a cute conductor. I love it when the orchestra sings it back to her with so much admiration. xD

  • Exactly!!! They don't produce things like this any more. Such a perfect combination of beauty, style, elegance, music and atmosphere. Roberta is one of my favourites (and Show Boat).

  • Greatest actress, my favorite, great video thanks

  • There is no one ever who can even come close to her!! Not now not ever!! She is a beautiful amazing talent and beautiful heart with mega talent in everything she did!! The best of the best!!

  • The most beautiful, and tallented actress to ever grace Hollywood, and the silver screen. No one can ever match this Heavenly creature. I believe she must have been an Angel on this earth. And the best thing to ever look at. God played a trick on us when he let us look at her, and then took her away. Because, we shall never see or hear such beauty ever again on this earth.

  • I agree completely. Her and Randolph both are. What a delightful on-screen match.

  • We are so fortunate to know her. From the comments I see, she has what she would want, the few people of quality and good taste. We few!

  • Thank you for posting this!

She was such an amazing talent, above reproach, and somehwere in Websters you will find her picture next to the word "class".

  • I love Irene Dunne. Please keep posting

  • Wasn't Irene great!? One of the few classic movie stars who didn't lip sinc and really sang her songs for the camera....BRAVO!
