US doctors who examined the bodies in the camps after the war found no evidence of zyklon b at all. Hundreds of thousands starved to death and died of diseases in the camps as a result of the german infrastructure collapsing because of allied terror bombing. On the eastern front the SS shot tons of jews though

Irving, is an admirer of Hitler as a man, hence tends to minimize his role in the holocaust. Shirer was a western reporter and highlighed the anti-Jewish character of the regime. Halder had his biases as well, but it does not lessen the value of his opinion particularly as it is confirmed by others.

@ianpafc At least Speer saw the light toward the end and plotted to get rid of the lot of them. Only a tower built around the bunker ventilation plant prevented it from happening. He also halted a lot of the "scorched earth" plans of Hitler and Goebbels. In a way, however, he was a worse criminal than Himmler because he was intelligent enough to know better but failed to act for too long.

Something I never understood - neither Hitler nor Himmler - nor especially Goebbels - measured up to their own standard of Aryan perfection. Goebbels was short statured and born with a club foot, Hitler was also short statured and (it is rumored) suffered from Parkinson's disease, Himmler had poor eyesight and a lower than average IQ. Heydrich while measuring up physically had Jewish ancestry. So the myth of a pure ideology is revealed. It was all about power.

@oioioi3000 Well certainly, "unfair" terms of the treaty of versailles did fuel the fire of a nationalist movement. But it doesn't explain the Nazis need for "racial hygene" and eugenics. Nazi eugenics has no clear objective in mind, just some abstract idea of "racial hygene." What for? Why? What needs to be improved? Himmler was unsatisified with his abilities and his mass killing spree would have been the only way he could leave his mark and justify his existence to himself. It's quite sad.

People in the near future making their children far superior than they are and creating a new elite class which frowns on 'imperfect' or as the film calls them 'invalid' people. I think people truly commited to any ideology when it comes to race firmly believe in advancing their people beyond their own limitations. That investigation definitively concluded that Heydrich had no Jewish ancestry ... which is unfortunate for the world given his activities during the war. Perhaps he would not have been so powerful if he WAS Jewish?

@14America88 Not so. The whole eugenics program was geared towards producing the perfect physical and mental specimin, which to them, meant blonde hair, blue eyes and height of over 5'10". At least that was the official party line. You are correct in one respect, in that the leadership of the Reich did not really care about conforming to the Aryan ideal, their sole purpose was to maintain their grip on power. An army of Aryan supermen, they hoped, would go a long way toward making that happen.

@rbilleaud Your conclusion is poor even though it has a part of reality in it. Hitler was fairly different from other dictators in what his goal wasn't personnal glory, but national glory. The idea of creating legends about the Aryan race and such had the same goal any religion has : to create a common belief among the people and thus unify them. Every great civilisation has its heroes and legendary tales. Of course though, Hitler's visions were too extreme to be acceptable in the world.
