  • LOL wossy

  • He didn't have any work for a while after this.

  • 0:57 Julian knows he's in trouble

  • I remember first watching this I did not understand the crowd reaction, the jokes regarding fisting and Hampstead Heath plus I was only 18, but a few years later I get it now.

  • This is awesome...

  • I used to live this Britain before the socialist european fedearilsts spin doctors got in

  • Julian, splendid fun.

  • Julian knew he was in trouble soon as head said it

  • Why the fuck do Gay blokes just go on and on about gay things over and over again?? Ok yes we get it you are gay, so fuckin what!!

  • @MOONST0MP Why does it matter, bigot? Don't enjoy the comedy? Don't watch it. I'm straight, and I love this shit.

  • @bodhamilla 'Dont enjoy it, dont watch it'... What is that suposed to mean? You dont know wether you like somthin or not until you have watched it but you have to watch it to know, so what the fuck are you tryin to say here? Dont watch anythin, you might not like it? You have to watch or you wont know!!!

  • @MOONST0MP It was a 'period ' in time when it was something different, funny and challenging - maybe from the mid sixties and slowly ebbed off in the mid 90's. Now many Gay comedians and presenters don't have or need to focus on it. Though all the best comedians use themselves as a joke and their sexuality is not off limits.

  • DIAMETER INSTRUMENT COLUMN

  • why did he get in trouble for this?

  • @LFCEOIN Because the establishment and media couldn't swallow it at the time as comedy. But the fact it was before the 9pm cut off may have been a factor.

  • Im not surprised hes off tv hes actually funny and got talent in many ways hes good old ENGLISH old school humour all "comedians"(job description not that theyre funny) do today is be derogatry or give long "ironic" disatribes ie I was on the bus isnt it funny how they pick people up at stops? etc etc

The English get fed shite on TV

  • "as a matter of fact ah.. i've just been fisting norman lamont" that's my phone's ringtone now..

  • I just starting reading julian's book 'A young man's passage' last night, and he starts out by setting the scene for this joke, but doesn't say what it was. He hadn't thought of a joke yet, and "near the front I spotted the conservative chancellor of the Exchequer, Norman Lamont. Fancy inviting him, I thought. How Inappropriate."

    Nice one Mr Clary.

  • Martin clunes has the best reaction looks like he's pissing with laughter

  • Funny thing is, if this joke were made today, nobody would even bat an eyelid?....

In 2009 Ricky Gervais can make jokes about disabled children!

Shows you how far we've come, in terms of decency/humour

  • shame actually that comment cost him his career whislt lamont fucked us all with his child like thatcher loving financial policies.

  • @aeronuk1 Shut up you moronic, daily mail reading bore!

  • The BING Advert was a pile of fucking shit. If you were the creative director on that you need to find a job in MacDonalds

  • I ain't finding it funny but I think the public overreacted way too much.

  • One of the best things is JC just kept a straight after he'd said it, as if he'd said something ordinary ! ; like he was in a world of his own.Very intelligent guy

  • @hexcane Julian Clary has outlived all of the UK's best 'homo-bores' as you so nicely put. His career has spanned further than any other comedian emulating his style and as such makes him a national treasure. Whereas your life has led you here... on YouTube... typing outdated homophobic remarks on a video that you didn't HAVE to watch. Congratulations. You win.

  • Judy Finnegan's reaction is the best - you can't even see her face.

  • This is what is needed. I love it.

  • i peed my pants laughing so much bring back julian clary to saturday nite stuff the pc brigade

  • Ross is so tightarsed and stepping in on this because he's the presenter, he's entrusted to keep the guests under control, and when Julian makes a joke like that, he has to try and hurry him along, otherwise Ross would have lost his job.

  • johnathan ross dumped him in this, so later he got the same with his phone message ban.

  • clive anderson...

    "nice big neck"

    hahahaha...

the brits do comedy the best..except ross..hes just a cunt

  • Ross fucks this up completely by trying to compete with a funny line. just stand back and let the man deliver the punch line and take his deserved laughs.

  • And so much fuss about Ross and Brand

  • Excellent work from Clary. Come back to the TV.

  • My favourite part about this has always been that everyone was laughing so much, they didn't actually hear the punchline which was 'talk about a red box'

Absolutely tragic that this one joke was a complete career destroyer for Julian for a long time when it got one of the biggest laughs I've ever heard a joke get!

  • @antoinefuckyou It wasn't even really funny or clever, they were only laughing from shock.

  • Fancy Richard and Judy realizing what fistings was! It must be reading all those books for their club!

  • I remember watching this live. I think I laughed for a fortnight. The rest of the show was still full of the audience giggling up until it ended :D

  • I often watch this clip when I need a laugh. So bloody funny.

  • Comedy gold but sadly for Clary it crippled his career.

  • What a nutter ! ; Priceless

  • OMG! this was years ago. i have no idea who Norman Lamont is. but i'm still laughing my ass off :')

  • @WickedLiam He was Chancellor when John Major was first Prime Minister towards the end of 1990, until he was succeeded as Chancellor by Kenneth Clarke in 1993

  • hmm 3 dislikes... one is norman lamont the second is his wife and the third is like all conservatives... is a homophobe. This was hillerious!

  • @atomicnortherner there a lot of gay conservatives. Many in the tory party.

  • I remember watching this live as an 11 year old and not understanding what was so funny!!

  • @ross92aimee03

    same here

  • hahahaha but who is norman lamont anyway?

  • @TheSparkle7 He was Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time.

  • probably the most amazing spontaneous funny thing ever to happen at a british awards ceremony except when Judy finigan's boobs popped out!

  • Classic

  • Judy Finnigan does a mean facepalm!

  • Classic stuff

Last time they ever did it live

  • this was 1993, Spike was 1994, absolute classic britsh comedy!

  • I remember seeing this when I was a kid and not knowing what it meant. I remember seeing Martin Clunes laughing hysterically too.

Was this the ceremony where Spike said "grovelling bastard"?

  • Garry Bushell is an idiot and that is putting it mildly. He would not know humour if it belted him in the gob.

He is a fat old bigot.

  • TREMENDOUS ; a real show stopper was this.I mean, what comment COULD top that ; just astonishing that Clary could look as if he hadnt said anything funny at al for the rest of his award when everyone else had been crippled by it ! ; Shut Ross up for once !

  • That was a hilariously classic TV moment!

  • Wossy had some fine hair back then.

  • You can see the Oh Shit I cant believe he just said that reaction all over Jonathan Ross's face it was brilliant. Britain has definitely produced some of the best Gay comedians and Julian Clary is the best of them.

  • Jonathan Ross always looks uncomfortable to me when other comedians are in his presence. It's like he feels threatened that they're stealing his thunder!

  • One of the funniest things I've seen on TV. Was this the good old days before politicians were controlling most of the media and we were spun out on spin? I'm sure "the good old days" weren't without maniuplation but it certainly appeared to be more free and (at times) funnier.

  • It's the reaction from Martin Clunes that gets me every time! Shame this show doesn't go out live anymore.

  • was he banned from tv for that? some people have got no sense of humour

  • what a leg

  • The people who complained about this are usually the ones who constantly moan & whinge about 'political correctness gone mad'. Hypocrites.

  • You can see Mark Lamar and Martin Clunes having a hell of a laugh after that joke!!!

    Hilarious

    Greetings from America!!!!

  • The laugh I've ever had on the Comedy Awards.

  • I assume you meant to say the 'biggest' or 'best' laugh, but that has to go to Spike Millighan for his "Oh the grovelling little bastard" comment about Prince Charles. The audience went absolutely mental for that and didn't stop laughing for ages. Much louder and longer than this.

  • Comment removed

  • Get out more.

  • What's that supposed to mean? Empty insults are easy to say when you can say them on You Tube. I think going to see Julian Clery is getting out as you say.

  • I meant that your response showed that you took what i said personal for some reason. I was simply saying the Millighan got a bigger laugh, not to correct you or put you down, but because i'd just watched the Millighan clip 30 seconds before this one and there's a huge difference. I'm not a fan of Julian Clary tbf, every single joke he makes is about being gay. Reminds me of Lenny Henry, every one of his jokes is about being black.

  • Milligan's speech is gold, they don't make 'em like that anymore.

  • LMAO! Oh my god. Julian is priceless ... what a way to steal the show! Jonathan Ross only just manages to hold himself together ... hilarious!

  • priceless ,,i love the way he stays dead pan all the way through

  • goin to Julian tomor ngt oct 23rd in dublin, just hopes hes really really vile, i need serious cheering up, rip Fanny

  • sorry but i think julian looks pritty hot here ;) x

  • johnathan ross looked like nicholas cage!

  • Martin Clunes's reaction makes this for me

  • The joke seems completely appropriate when you think just how unpopular and discredited the tory government were by then. Actually, the real joke was the fact that Norman Lamont was there in the first place - it was like the headmaster had turned up and everyone was thinking "what the f***'s he doing here?"

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Absolutely classic moment!

  • Arguably one of the best TV moments ever, but equally one of the most heartbreaking too. A little bit of Julian Clary is pondering the potential consequences of the joke during the nominations read-out - but credit to him for still firing out the comedy.

Some of the reactions are priceless too, positive albeit shocked. Its a shame that he was hounded out by a fucked up goverment/tabloid regime.

Tragic. I would take a Clary Saturday night show over X-Factor any day.

  • The actual punchline ' talk about a red box' (geddit? he was chancellor) was drowned in the general hilarity.

  • Funny but really all that offensive.

  • i guess it was at the time, this was back i 93 he brought the camp/draggy type acts to the tv it was at a time when it was ok to be gay so long as you didnt tell anyone and mp's were really clicky hey it was the rane of the torries the most stuck up party next to the republicans in the USA they'd get offended if a buddgie farted in their proximity

  • I meant to say Funny but not really all that offensive. Good point about the republicans. Politicans are targets for humour. if they cant stand the heat they should get out of the kitchen!

  • This is why the Comedy Awards are no longer live!

  • A classic moment..love it!

  • mark lamarr's face says it all...great british irony(proud)....get julian back on tv on a saturday night....id rather have intelligent humour that makes people think rather than numbskull FUCKIN simonEVIL BASTARDthe thatch cowell! i had my rant folks!

  • I laugh almost as much at Martin Clunes' face as at Julian Clary's joke.

  • Sheer brilliance XD and it works so well because of Julian's classic poise and serenity. completely threw JR so funny!

  • This is SO funny - it may have singlehandedly killed Julian's TV career for a while but damn this clip is worth it just to see Jonathan 'Smut may as well be my Middle Name' Ross for once lost for words, so bravo Julian for that!

  • Yeah rare moment Wossy speechless.

  • I love Julian and thought this was Hysterical. He always likes to catch you off guard, he is extremely clever and one of the most underated comedians.

  • The "Fisting Norman Lamont" joke -which was hilarious, cost him dearly. Seeing that fucking prick Gary Bushell on T.V IS offensive to me. Why couldn't they ban his arse off TV with all the crap shit he had to say?

  • Gary Bushell makes me want to vomit. A fucking piece of human trash.

  • Gary Bushell is a cunt!

  • Wow, they're still laughing when he's reading the nominees out!

Classic scene from a great comedian.

  • how can you have a go at a man for this? Everyones in stitches!

  • If I remember correctly this caused outrage at the time because it was live and before the watershed.

It was all over the front page of the tabloids the next day and Julian had to go on TV and publicly apologize.

Personally it is one of the most hilarious moments in TV history for me. XD

  • Yeah, but that was 1993 almost 20 years ago. If THAT joke was told for the first time, today, the press (sun) couldn't go after him the same way as they did then. They wouldn't have been able to call him 'the prancing poof' either. Its easy to say this now, 2 decades later with hindsight and the fact that I'm not Julian Clary but he shouldn't have apologised. All those that laughed (the were all on camera) would have used their celebrity in support him. Atleast I'd like to think so.

  • Thats awesome. Johnathon Ross doesn't know what to say! You can tell he's thinking - holy shit that was funny but i can't laugh to much because i'll get a grilling too.

  • Comedy gold. Grab it while you can, as it was impossible to find for a long time and it would be a shame if it vanished again. Thanks!

  • Just as hilarious now but for some reason it doesn't seem as shocking as it did back then.

  • Julian's a genius. The remark is hilarious. The response was homophobic, plain and simple.

  • OMG Scott I am so sorry I gave you a thumbs down by mistake sorry, I agree with you and so do most of my friends.

    sorry xx

  • I love Julian he is so funny, and very tall in real life

  • Comment removed

  • its a bit sad that his career took years to recover, homophobic really

  • Comment removed

  • "Stop being a lying cunt putting false malice into perfectly reasonable reactions."

my reaction was perfectly reasonable, then you called me a lying cunt? thats a lot more offensive.

  • Brilliant. An Gary Bushell was a right cock for trying to get him band.

  • I've missed having this on YouTube since Goatherders's account was suspended. Thanks for uploading!

  • One of the best TV ad lib moments ever!

  • Prepared, more like. Still funny, though.

  • Julian is absolute class....many people need scripts to appear funny, this guy doesn't.

Sharp as a knife...and shame on the tossers who stood on there ' holy than thou ' soap boxes and wouldn't take this guy on after The Lamont Comment....His timing and delivery are flawless !

  • I'd pay good money to see him.

  • Martin Clunes is in stitches

  • So is Judy Finnegan!
