I like how the lyric "Disappointed a few people" also sounds like "Disappointed of you people" which is a switcharoo making the context of the lyrics different.
saw PIL on this tour (with new order & the sugarcubes) and they sucked (so did new order). john was great, though; he kept asking the people in the back how much they paid for their shitty seats. he prefaced this one with the following: "this is ... a song about ... how i feel ... toward all of you ... it's called ... DISAPPOINTED!" i left the show smiling, knowing i'd been insulted & ripped off by one of the best
I've always detested the Pistols in comparison to PiL...don't ask me why...I still respect the Pistols and all they brought to rock and punk rock respectively...just don't expect me to choose the Pistols over PiL, it won't ever happen.
@beelzabubba "Disappointed a few people..." Not disappointed at new people. And to be honest, when this came out, I thought it said "Disappointed of you people," so I'm not trying to be all holier-than-thou. Just sayin'.
@scandal101 I think it's due to the fact that kids these days rely on drama and other meaningless BS to make them cope. they need to see a "I relate w/ that person show" so MTV hit that area. I agree, straight up music 24/7 loved the channel when it came out. Now, I just youtube. MTV needs to change it's title because it IS NOT MTV.
its called post punk because punk only laster from 76-78.all the original punks were disallusioned with what became of the creation and they formed new bands with a new sound. thus the punks were now post punk.
I just heard a comment (by Julian Temple on another video) that Heath Ledger based his interpretation of The Joker on Johnny, so I guess I am not alone.
woah man. This MTV rep has a sisters of mercy logo on the back of his leather...interviewing Johnny rotten. This proves that at one point in MTV history, it did cover some decent stuff.
..also does anyone else believe or think that after the sex pistols break up now that rotten started 'pil' a lot of his songs now are slower and if you listen to the lyrics, it's always about his best friend(sid) and the past and some of the other songs of his, they are towards sid.. because he did miss him he was his best friend. he also took the song "flowers of romance" that sid was going to do (play with his other band but never got to...) because he overdosed. rotten just looks so down now
XTC is a phenomenal band and PIL also continues to be amazing regardless of the fact that both bands have disbanded. I admire and esteem both bands equally. If only there were bands as great or as interesting today.
Actually yeah, but to be honest I think that was more of Lydon letting him handle him if you know what I mean. He's a capricious bastard to say the least.
yeah, wierd how lydon went from dirty ugly punk music, to some tuneful, even poppy, yet still angsty post-punk. P.I.L. was a seminal band, the crazy segue from the punk years to the "alternative/college/underground/new wave" era.
I love the way he just does what he wants without a worry :) avoiding that thing where an act takes themselves too serious and as they get older! they will try to live off past glorys and want everyone to praise them :) and become an old shoe! Lydon just keeps things fresh! he keeps moving forwards! with the odd Pistols concert here and there to make some extra money which he is very honest about :)
does anyone remember the full intro clip..John walks into a novelity shop in Tiauana and right inside the door is a velvet picture of Jesus and right next to it is a velvet picture of Elvis. He comments immediately and so brilliantly...."Jesus, it's Elvis!"
Jesus Christ. I listened to this when I was maybe 16 for the first time. Now that I hear it 20 years (or so) later, knowing the backstory, it really takes on a whole new meaning. It's like the shore moved a few miles inland.
Talking shores, I was inspired to scratch disappointed large onto a beach on the island of Hoy with an old twig in 1989. Needless to say, no planes or jets noticed and carried on trudging way among the clouds and the birds. Man, was I disappointed. I like your comment about the shore moving a few miles inland. Apt. And rather poetic.
i've never heard any pil before, and i'm really surprised at how experimental it is in a way...its sure as hell not sex pistols, but i expected more ties to that form, not such a total break. weirdly positive....how strange.
I really like what you've written. That's exactly how people should react to music they've not heard before. Whether they like it or not. Your critique was real and honest. Find me on FB Simeon Awitti-Sunga.
They show 120 min on vh1 classic. They were one of the first shows I went to back in "92" at Brandise University. Lydon pulled a tampon out of his ass and tossed it at the crowd.
vh1 classic has 120 minutes. that`s where i saw this video. i was actually watching it last night at around 4am when this video came on. i like watching that and seeing how much better alternative was back in the 80s.
Dave Kendall has a new show on Sirius satellite radio called Party 360. Sadly, it's nothing like 120 minutes was back in the day. I really miss the old 120 min episodes and the music.
