This looks a lot like the Nemesis game I used to have for my MSX. Good grief there is a lot of stuff going on on the screen at the same time!
Yeah scrolling was one of the big upgrades on the Amiga, I remember being stunned by the Amiga 500 for having super smooth scrolling, the MSX could never do that (at leas thte MSX 1). The other big upgrade is the MOD files for sound, there's only so much you can do with midi.
you mean an autofire ? honestly i don't know, it depends on your emulator,
but having no use for autofire i don't know if it's in blueMSX.
anyway if you upgrade your weapon to get a laser you won't really need an autofire ;)
annd autofire wouldn't be of much help anyway, because you only have a max of 2 shots on the screen at once, you're better off aiming the enemies then fire, than fire and then aim the enemy ;)
For reference, the remake on the X68000 should be Nemesis '90 Kai (I've had a copy for some time but never played it, but I recognize the faces early in the first stage).
I think I'll stick with that version...this one looks a bit too choppy for me, and apparently it's already running on an MSX2+.
Well, more specifically it's because the background graphics are drawn with tiles, while the foreground graphics are just typical sprites. The "resolution" of the background tiles is much lower than the sprites used for the rest of the graphics, which is why scrolling appears choppy.
@ThrilloVanHouten Actually, it would probably have to do more with how the game is programmed, how the MSX2 is able to process the graphics and not necessarily a fault with the resolution or type of graphics in of itself.
Right, there shouldn't be any difference between MSX2 versions running this game. It's strange that Space Manbow managed a smooth scroll on the same hardware.
It's choppy because MSX scrolling had to be done in 8 pixel steps due to the lack of finer scrolling registers as seen on the NES.
From what it seems it looks like the program is shifting each background tile to the left, or just changing the address at where it starts drawing the scrren, which would achieve the same effect.
Good choice, after all nobody can judge a game by just looking at its intro. Man first the PC Engine (I kinda started the YouTube PC Engine movement), now the MSX. Good stuff!
Good

I have this on an MSX emulator for MAC OS8, but it's too hard! Is there turbo support?

@EdOscuro Scrolling on the MSX and the MSX isn't choppy because of lag, but because the screen updates itself in a inefficient manner.

And that's why I can't pass this game :\

Other titles like SPace Manbow or Aleste scrolls fine. Code issue?
chooche 3 years ago
Space Manbow is MSX 2, not MSX 1 like this game.
Aleste has vertical scrolling.

Gradius is one of my favorite shmups with 3 my favorite of the series. It just rocks :)

You can easily tell that it wasn't Konami's head Gradius team that worked on this. Namely, the mispelling of 'Missile' as 'Misslie'
FusionArmorX 4 years ago 2
@FusionArmorX Wow... I had actually never noticed that misspelling (which has 2 's'es by the way) of 'Missilie' in the game. Good catch :)

Great videos. I should capture a run-through of a game, too, not just their intros :)

I demand more videos of these awesome games! The whole world should know about these games! Gradius for the MSX!
