this is a song about someone losing someone , i went to a freddie starr show when it first came out as a teenager , it was the funniest show id seen , but he told us the story and brilliantly sang the song and i can remember the silence of the audiance when he finished only broken by woman crying
What beautiful music. this song is a nostalgic song, I think the singers they felt that the United States is changing society and with it the feelings that you have ever had the United States ... the past will never come back so we can only look to the future with optinismo.
Such a lovely song, and so sad! I love this song, it even inspired me to write a story once almost a decade ago. Sadly the story was destroyed, although my more recent one I wrote a few hours fits with this song.
sorry that the music they make now werent soo good like the 70s to bad i werent alive by then :( but its always cheering me up when i listen 70s music!
Man!!!! I just tried to listen to kurt`s cover of this beautifull song,, and he trashed big time,,.first of all GOD knows who told him he sings,I couldn`t stand it not even 20 seconds geeeeess
I was born after this song was out, but I'm old enough to remember having a 45rpm record of it that used to belong to my sisters... even as a kid in the 80's I likes stuff from the 70's. There is just something "real" about this kind of music. (And even as a kid, the paradox of such an upbeat song being so sad in the lyrics intrigued me.)
I still remember that turning the radio on during the 70s and 80s meant listening to 2 or 3 new great songs every single day. How proud we are of being there to listen to all of this awesome music. Who the hell invented rap, hip hop, reggaeton, bachatas, electronic. they will sure go to hell for killing the music
I remember being a little boy when I first hear this and was so in love with my friend, 'willy' because it had my name on it. I had a little 45 record of it and would sit in my room for hours seeing what would fit in the middle of the little 45 record, over and over.
This is fantastic! It makes me cry, but the music relaxes my mind. Idk why, I'm 14 and I listen to it as an awakening when everything starts to seem bad. :j

This is the worst song ever. I was tortured by it as a child. They played it over and over on the radio. It has no musical merits, and the lyrics make you want to kill yourself, if only to get away from the song.

@scrowfan41 It's been a long time but if I recall correctly, I first heard this song in the early 80s, when I was in my early teen. Maybe from one of my parents' vinyls, maybe from some radio station, I really can't remember how I heard it in the first place. All I can remember is I loved it so much that I couldn't stop listening to it, even though back then I could only understand very few English words. Time flies, some memories fade, some will always remain.:)
I remember being a little girl when I first heard this and was so in love with it because it had my name in it. I had the little 45 record of it and would sit in my room for hours listening to this over and over.
I miss you Colin, you chose this song to played at your funeral, yes we had so much fun when we were little, and I forgive that you teased me without mercy, I wish so much I could pick up the phone and hear you talking to me once more.
@PieceofMindmusic no shes talking about Michelle. wow just listen to the song and ull figure out wht its all about. the part tht says, "the stars we could reach, were just starfish on the beach" he meant tht shes in heaven now and can reach all of the stars
last november during the morning 2 people came into my house thepushed me down the steps broke my chin and cheekbone they stabbed me over @over with across thenstuck a church steeple ornament in my face, on the way to hos, they said i died 3 times, when it happened i saw evil things it was hell the man that did iti knew, his wife was with him, when she was done she stuck a knife in me then said die, moral is don't date married men, he is free i am scarred for life.raine
@DanBlabbers Its actually a reworking (but not a translation ) of Jacques Brel's song "Le Moribond" but with a rather different feel to it. The original enjoins those the singer leaves behind to laugh and dance and have a good time while making acerbic comments about some of them. Not at all maudlin and sentimental like this version. .
Maybe when you face a situation where you face death this song may be understandable to you. Sadly you who think life goes on forever shall someday find the folly in that way of thinking! Love those who are with you now, for we can all be called away so quickly!
Such a depressing song...I remember this one from the '70's. I'd feel so down every time I heard it. Still can't really listen to it. Pretty song though in it's own heartfelt way. I always thought it strange though that a song this sad became such a hit and was on all the radio stations all the time .
I remember back in the 70's the rumor in my neighborhood (on Long Island NY) was that the singer Terry Jacks had died of leukemia. And this was his "death" song. But he was no longer around to see his song go up the charts to number one. Very bitter sweet one hit wonder. Now just found out on Wiki - that Terry Jacks is still alive...
mind this laura we had fun only me u and the rest o our gang will mind it but we were the first i love u and miss u will see soon cos i dinna feel to good either stil come to ur grave when im home love u xxxxxxxxx
@splicer01 --No, this is a re-make of a song that a french man wrote. As this song was released, that composer/writer stopped working. Later he died of cancer. This version has a verse added by Terry Jack and he changed the chorus chords to be more happy. (Found that info on some other website earlier when I was trying to find the version I first heard.)
This song always made me cry and a child. I was moving away from all my friends and thinking of not seeing them again and then listening to this song. Did me in. I was done. Great song for pulling on the heart string. I no longer listen to this because I like the season have moved on to be more positive. I allow no negative thought or people in my life!!!!
