In the original episode (S3Ep5), where Alan tells the joke, he doesn't take credit for it. He asks Stephen "Have you heard the joke that's been going around the internet . . .". I think I'm safe in saying that no joke that Fry ends the show with is younger than ten years. Most are older than that, but there's been at least one Steven Wright line.
@wilfin900 Yeah, no kidding! I actually think it was unfair/wrong to retell the joke that Alan had told before. I'm quite sure both he and Stephen have a wonderful relationship and are friends and all, but Stephen steals his bit here, where Stephen is given the laughter and applaud for something that was entirely Alan's joke (at least in terms of Qi). I dunno... I felt kinda sorry and angry for Alan. I love Stephen, but the writers and Stephen shouldn't have done it. It feels wrong to me :P
LOL my GF said "she must only face to the right on the british currency.... because she faces to left on this one...... but for some reason she's upside down"
drink almost came out my nose.... shes my own little allen davies
Stephen says if a nosebleed lasts for more than 20 minutes you should seek medical attention. here in nz they say that your nosebleed needs to have been going for 3 hours before you do something about it. 3 HOURS!!! you could watch Avatar if you were so inclined.
@sinnikal1 "here in nz they say that your nosebleed needs to have been going for 3 hours before you do something about it."
WebMD says 10 minutes and Mayo says 20 as does MedlinePlus and all recommend leaning forward and pinching the nose shut. My father found out via nosebleeds that he had very high blood pressure. Apparently posterior nosebleeds are the really dangerous kind that keep going. Does NZ hope you will die and not weaken the gene pool with your pathetic self? :)
I would think that people line up to be on this show. (Then again, celebrities are vain.) That said, Gyles was the best they could do? His comments aren't necessarily worthless, but his delivery borders on the creepy.
p.s. I'm 43 years old and had the first nose bleed of my life last spring. I completely lost it and assumed I was dying of brain liesions/nose cancer.
And if any of you are interested, George Washington, FDR, and Thomas Jefferson (as well as JFK on the half dollar and Ike on the dollar coin) all face left, while Honest Abe is facing right. (on US currency that is, of course)
That's so weird, why would they repeat the joke like that?! Alan obviously remembered, surely Stephen would have as well. I agree that Alan told it better.
I first heard the closing med school joke in a low budget horror movie made in the late 70's or early 80's, so it probably dates back to at least 20 or 30 years before that.
But even though it wasn't "stolen" from Alan, it was still kind of sloppy to use it again in a show watched by a bunch of anal retentive nerds (and I mean that in a loving way--in addition to including myself as one).
@pacmansays I suppose that's why Alan looked so very, completely, utterly unimpressed by the joke. Anyway, I know I've heard the joke before, and I know I've heard it from Alan on QI. (I love Stephen Fry dearly, but Alan did a much better job of telling that joke.)
didn't they say in a previous series that american army doctors in the vietnam war used to pin the tongues of soldiers to their cheeks when they out them under precisely so they wouldn't swallow their tongues?
@fowad27 I guess the keyword here would be "vietnam war".
In all seriousness, though, the doctors back then could be unaware that the soldiers couldn't swallow their tongues, or they did it for the other reason; that it wouldn't obstruct any other action that could be done through the mouth (such as breathing or less pleasant things like throwing up blood).
The "swallow the tongue" myth is so popular that I wouldn't be surprised if they taught it to med students, as well.
@Nebirias But the QI people themselves implied that it was a necessary to do that so that they didn't choke on their own tongues. I was only pointing it out so that they could deduct a few points from themselves for that misinformation.
@Nebirias On the whole though, they are remarkably meticulous when it comes to correcting their mistakes. Just this once, something happened to get away from them.
@fowad27 That's true, but I also remember them first giving points to Dara O'Briain for his answer about the tripel point of water and then taking them away from him in his next appearance because he was actually wrong but they hadn't noticed the first time around; the viewers did.
If they took points from Dara, I want points taken from Stephen!

The queen faces right on Canadian coins too

In the US, most coins have portraits facing left. Except for the penny, which shows Lincoln facing right. I have no idea why it is different.
(Also the new version of the nickel shows Jefferson facing forward and slightly left, which was also the case for the short-lived Sacagawea dollar.)

Man, there is some wacky stuff in the "suggestions" column for this episode.
Most of them seem to be the antithesis of the show. Gang Starr, Jonas Bros?! WTF?!
