Nixon ran as the "law & order" candidate in 1968 & Ford slapped every American in the face by pardoning his felony obstruction of justice. Ford should have let the process write the end to it. Nixon WOULD have been innocent until proven guilty & may have plea bargained. What unbelieveable arrogance to assume what the courts might or might not do in his case! Both would have assured their legacy by holding themselves up to the law.

There was no way that Nixon could have been tried by an impartial jury. Ford was facing very trying timed both on the domestic front and in foreign policy as well.
Nixon was also failing in health, and nearly died shortly after leaving office, and it would have been a couple of years before he could have been brought to trial.

Ford is the most underated president of all time. I'm a moderate and tend to lean Demorcrat becuase of fiscall reasons, and i know as well everyone should know, that Ford saved this nation.
That has got to be one of the best presidential speeches I have ever heard. Even though this speech is over thirty years old and has nothing to do with the present day, I was sincerely interested in what he had to say.

I remember watching this speech. Pure bullshit, then and now. Nixon ran as the "law & order" candidate in 1968 & Ford slapped every American in the face by pardoning his felony obstruction of justice. Ford should have let the process write the end to it. Nixon WOULD have been innocent until proven guilty & may have plea bargained. What unbelieveable arrogance to assume what the courts might or might not do in his case! Both would have assured their legacy by holding themselves up to the law.

Andrew Johnson pardoned treasonous acts by Confederate leaders in exchange for them never holding government offices on any level. Historians have unequivocally stated that Nixon NEVER could have had a fair trial. He was not really a "private" citizen. Ford made the unpopular, yet right decision for America. It did shut the door on this story and allowed all in the political process to fairly quickly move on to the pressing issues of that day. Ford lost. America moved on. Carter took over. Nixon regained health and made a strong contribution as an elder statesman, helping work to end The Cold War at long last.

There was no way that Nixon could have been tried by an impartial jury. Ford was facing very trying timed both on the domestic front and in foreign policy as well.
Nixon was also failing in health, and nearly died shortly after leaving office, and it would have been a couple of years before he could have been brought to trial.
Ford did the right thing.

Nixon's problems with phlebitis were chronic. He dealt with it while in office. After leaving office, it nearly killed him.
Not sure Nixon wanted to kill himself.... however, he did deal with depression after leaving office. Personally, I do wonder if he had lost some of his will to live, although the more I have studied Nixon, the clearer it becomes that he was a fighter who did not give up easily.
Through it all, history has shown time and again that there really was no "X " (ex) in Nixon.

Everyone commits mistakes...Nixon...unquestionably did in the highest office on the globe, but I believe that President Ford did the right thing. At that time of turmoil in so many respects the country would have been distracted and divided like never before if the former president had gone to trial.
