    Fender Jaguar

Fender introduces one of its most distinctive signature models ever, the Kurt Cobain Jaguar-meticulously modeled on the battered and highly unusual 1965 Jaguar that Cobain wielded during the heady early-'90s era when Nirvana ruled rock and led a musically stunning and culturally subversive movement. Fender craftsmen have ...

  • Though it might have roots in surf, I feel like the auto palm mute would be wonderful for poppunk music. Beautiful guitar.

  • that auto-palm mute feature = GENIUS! wish there was some way to put it on my strat

  • This was one of Kurt Cobains favorite guitars.

  • @HRMethod He had a jaguar HH not this

  • I actually just ordered one of these throught the custom shop. Among some of the mods I made, I had #150 frets put in & changed the pickups. I play more rock & blues. I'm wondering if I should add a buzz stop also. Will it help with tuning, entonation, sustain, etc...? Whacha' think? Thanks! -Alan

  • were you playing a variation on "sparks" to begin the video?

  • i bought my bros jag from em for 10 bucks after he got a tele and i love it.

  • hi john, i'm buying myself a jag for xmas=) and would like to ask is it hard to put the mute on the jag? what does it entail? i'm also buying the buzz stop. i have the diagram on how to install that, thats pretty easy.

    thanks

    debi

    keep strummin'

  • Hi Debi, The mute is suppose to come with the guitar and it's a total no-brainer to flip in and out of position.

Hope you like the guitar if you get it. Most people think of those guitars as surf music instruments but it's really in the hands of the player.

    Thanks for your interest.

    John

  • what was the first riff you were playing at the start of the video.

  • I have that same amp.... I hate it.....

  • you want 2 dimarsio super distortions on there like the kurt cobain one other wise it just sounds terrible with the single coils

  • sorry i don't speak english very well what position do you recommend me to put the mics? beside the strings or put it too down?

    thanks love your review

  • It will be mine, o it will be mine.

  • Have had mine for...2 days now, people, this is the shit, absolutely amazing, been my dream guitar for so long and believe me, it lives up to the hype...and I play rock!

  • The amount of different tones available on this guitar is incredible... So versatile! Love the muter as well

  • Yeah Joey. Just about the guitar and not about me. I'm going for a general opinion and that's about it.

    Thanks for the interest.

  • I think this is the one Fender I should buy American-made. So sweet! Great demo.

  • this is more like a robot

  • Cobain guitar's best !

  • Cool review, I loved learning about the background about the guitar

  • you seem alittle tipsy in this video

  • Let the man play with reverb, in fact good sir go get an outboard Fender reverb unit and plug into that. That's how a Jag sounds best.

  • would it kill you to turn down the reverb?

  • No it wouldn't kill me but it might kill you if you keep listening. Better go to another channel and listen to those who use less reverb. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone.

  • @johnhguitar no but seriously turn downi the reverb

  • @johnhguitar hows the overdrive sound? for like grunge or maybe like sabbath type stuff?

  • @themanchild27 Whats wrong with reverb, it,s surf music. Go f off dude . I think it sounds very good John. One of the better players on here! "When they can't diss you for your playing, they diss you for your tone" -Zach

  • @themanchild27

i must agree with u..there shouldnt be any reverb, when reviewing the guitar, as its harder to hear the actual guitar sound, with effects..effects is for making music. becomes kind of a pain in the ass.

  • @themanchild27 You should go listen to NextLevelGuitar's Jag review

    ...problem? :7

  • @themanchild27 He can do what ever he's badass. So screw off 8=D

  • No moriré feliz sin una Jaguar

  • what is this song?

  • play some funk man! thats what the Jaguar is good for

  • DUDE! ALL THOSE JAZZ GUITAR CHORD MELODY THINGS, freakin BLEW my mind!!! 4:46-5:00 what're the chords u played???

  • I can't see wata I'm doin'! I'll have to figure it out.

  • @johnhguitar lol whatever it is, it probably changed my life ;)

  • cube 30....niiiiice......

  • How do you get so many guitars mate?

  • Borrowed. Most belong to someone else sorry.

  • WOOOOOT just put a down payment on a used one in Olympic White. Put $500 down, and the total price is $900. THATS A STEAL FOR AN AVRI

  • playing a lot like townshend's style there

  • playing a lot like townshend's style there

  • i have noticed on fender mustangs, when i bend the 6th string, it feels like i dont have enough fretboard to grip it with. like almost like the neck is too narrow. please can someone tell me if this guitar is the same way

  • I fell off my surfboard and the guitar got wet. Anyway there was nowhere to plug it in and my amp sunk.

  • this was also used by indie and grunge musicians in the late 80s and early 90s

  • i want one but with a bound and dotted neck

  • ewww reverb on such a nice tone

  • how much did that guitar cost, I didn't see it at sam ash or anything but it sounds amazing

  • ONE DAY I will own one...

  • WHere is the trus rod???

  • i have that roland amp

  • i'm in love of this guitar..

  • The damper is a great idea.

  • Aweasome 3:15 where do I get one of those and how are they called?

  • check out the kurtified fender mustang WOW just google it, it's so special

  • do any of the jags come with a set neck?

  • @tvicena nothing with fender on the headstock has a set neck

  • @givemeajackson That's not true.

  • If i bought it, could i take off the American flag. No offence of course, im just not American.

  • stock pickups sounds too shrill , try novaks or lollars . . .

  • I saw a video of you playing the shit out of a Gibson SG Standard and I creamed you need to do an HH Classic Player Jaguar review and play it like the SG! I've been wanting to buy the HH for awhile so let me know if you can do a review!

  • Good guitar ! How does it cost more or less ?

  • Beautiful guitar and nice video...thanks!

  • Such an ugly guitar. Yet I cant look away from its beauty.

  • Hi, I was wondering If I should go for the Fender Jaguar or an Epiphone Sheraton II (similiar to a Gibson 335) , im heading in a surf-rock and alternative direction, what do you recommend?

  • @BlingVision if your going for surf and alternative, definately the Jag. The Jag is known for its role in both those styles. The Sheraton is more for a classic rock, blues or jazz player. Something else you might want to look into is a Jazzmaster. Still great for surf and alternative, but better for classic rock or jazz than a jag.

  • my dream guitar

  • ya know sod some of these gay comments, it sounds beastly! :D

  • Do they all have American flags?

  • @PBANDSNOW just the american standard ones

  • @bunderberg1234 can you burn them off? I mean rip!

  • @thechaircover its just a sticker. but it shows that it is a real american standard one. its like the genuine sticker for fenders

  • @PBANDSNOW The American made instruments have the American flag. If they don't. They're made in a different part of the world "Mexico. China. Japan. etc"

  • @BackingTracks6661 Thats fine, i want an american made guitar, I just want to know if i can take the sticker off

  • @PBANDSNOW Sorry. I didn't read that part. :P It was like 4 in the morning when I read/responded though.

Yes you can take the sticker off. But some perfer to keep it on. It's your choice.

  • just bought a 90s japanese jag second hand, the guy also gave me seymour duncan hot bridge and vintage neck pickups. im tempted to get these put in over the stock ones, anyone got any experience with them? also has anyone used roundwound slinky 10s on their jag and had any problems?

  • Frusciante!!!

  • It also help start grunge!!!

  • @PBANDSNOW THANK U!!!

  • @prestmon888 no prob. Its true, every one is all like "it started surf music, and cobain modded his so much that its not even a jag" well, he changed the pick ups to mustang. So still, no matter what anyone says. IT STARTED GRUNGE!!!

  • the jazzmaster/jaguar is always a coin flip with players. so people get along with it and love it others hate it. I play surf style guitar but i still take my stratocaster over the jaguar, I have yet to play one i could get along with. Same thing with the les paul....I have yet to play one i could get along with. I guess I'm wierd.

  • nice review but too much reverb imho

  • i would probably give my legs to have ONE of the guitars in this video...

  • In my opinion: Any Fender Jaguar without a tremolo bar is fucking useless.. To me atleast...

  • I have a question: I have a 2005 American made Fender '62 Reissue Jaguar (3-color sunburst). How does the value of a reissue guitar go up when compared to a (that year) model.

Like in 40 years would my 2005 ('62 reissue) be worth the same amount or comparable to a Jaguar with specs new to 2005 an actual '05 model (Comparable condition)?

I don't think they made a 2005 specific model; but I'm just wondering if reissues are doomed to have a lower value because they are in face "reissues"?

  • I invite anyone to help this guy with these questions. Sorry....

  • @johnhguitar Dont buy a guitar as an investment. No reissues might go up especially early 80's but only strats and tele IMO.

  • @bumblefritz guitars hold their value. this is currently the only AMERICAN made jaguar model, and it's valualble enough now as it is

  • @DDInDaHouse187 I bought my Jaguar because it was my dream guitar, and being 15 years old at the time working at a shit job it took like over a year to save up for. I'm never selling this thing. I was just curious on the subject. I have noticed however that Jags/Jazzies are going up in price. When I bought mine in '05 it was around $1,499 (alot of dough for a 15 year old), and now on most sites they are listed as $1,699.

  • @bumblefritz

the value of guitars changes depending on the market.

if they stopped making those jags, then the price would increase, because theres only a certain number.

say if they started making competition mustangs again the same way, the vintage price would fall drastically by around 200-300 dollars, then minus for damage and wear

    hope i helped :)

check out my stuff, ill be uploading originals soon! : )

  • @bumblefritz i think it also depends on what Fender will be producing in the future. If they would stop producing jaguars it would sky high.

  • @nunopumpkin Depends on the demand for them, because when Fender first discontinued the Jazzmaster and Jaguar they went dirt cheap due to lack of demand, that's why alot of Alt Rock guitarists during the mid 80's/early 90's used them

  • @bumblefritz i think they are doomed to have a lower value because its a reissue and it's not an original because for some reason people think older instruments should be more expensive, I'm no expert but i'm betting a 2005 jaguar in 2045 is going to have gained enough value and be somewhere around the value of what a 40 year old jaguar would be today but they won't have the same value as the older one, that's just a theory

  • @bumblefritz Put it this way, You could buy a jag in the late 80s for under $100. Then grunge happened and the price went silly. Think of what genres of music go well with them... they're pretty much all dirty and distorted and noisy. In 40 years time that chime and feedback and general nuisances that makes jags so awesome might be unforgivable.

Also, the 'new' jags like the classic players and the blacktops are very different to the 60s ones, you really cant guess their future price.

  • @bumblefritz

it depends if the reissues go out of production.

like the originals went out, so they became more rare, then fender brought them back with slight mods, so they increased in value,

or to put it this way, unless fender are idiots, i wouldnt count on it :)

  • @bumblefritz possibly not, but there are other factors that come into play, like:

availability of parts for the guitar 40 years down the road, wether fender is even still in business, or wether or not someone actually wants one bad enough to pay good money for one. it also really depends on where you live, if you think about it...i live in rural texas, for example, and i had a big problem trying to sell my B.C.Rich Warlock, because no-one around here wanted it.

  • @bumblefritz No one knows what it's going to be worth 40 years from now. They didn't know in the 60's that those strats that sold for hundreds of dollars would be going for upwards of 15 grand in some situations. It's supply and demand.... or whatever the player or collector is willing to pay. So if becomes a popular guitar with players and there is a big demand with a small supply.... more money. They seem to keep their value on ebay right now for sure.... that's a good sign.

  • @bumblefritz

it is a lot different than a 62 and probably won't have the same value because...

    1. 1950 -70 is considered the golden age of fender, those years have an auro of awesomness (and a pricetag)

    2. in those days, demand was a lot smaller than today, so handwound pickups and hand selected woods were standard on quality guitars. this guitar is a mass produced model:)

it's a very good guitar but nothing like the real deal!

  • @bumblefritz It really depends on future demand. It's hard to predict if the American Reissues will go up in value the way that 60's and 70's Fender have. There are certain 80's Japanese Fender reissues that have been trending up in value. Hope that helps. Enjoy your guitar.

  • @bumblefritz I bought a new Fender Jaguar in '64. for about 10% the cost of a new Chevy which I also bought. The guitar was about $300 and the car was about $3,000 (yeah for a new Chevy).

Today a similar new Chevy is about $35,000, so a new Fender guitar that is $3,000 or less is relatively the same price it was 45 years ago. It is your dollar that is worth less, so it takes more of them now to buy the same thing. Now you can see that a new $1,500 Strat costs about half what it did in 1964.

  • Not to complain, but a guitar like this should be demo'ed through a solid tube amp (Marshall, Mesa, Hiwatt, take your pick).

A demo through a Roland Cube can't really capture all of the nuances of the guitar like a tube amp can.

But I know you're doing the best you can, so no worries.

  • I bought two of these in white, from the Corona plant musicians friend.com. I returned the first due to a bad switch that I didn't want to mess with. I really miss mine. I want another one. . but I am torn tween the Jag and the Jazz. How does the shorter scale change the tone. . and I have always wondered why Leo built a flag ship guitar (at the time) in the short scale? Please advise if you will!

  • Damn man. Thank you.

    Dean

  • Now, I am considering this guitar, but I love palying way more than blues and I was wondering if this guitar is any good for punk, hard rock, metal, jazz, etc?

  • If your good at punk, hard rock, metal or jazz then it is, etc.

  • @johnhguitar I am, but I'd like to know tone-wise, is it appropriate?

  • Isn't there a Joe Pass video of him playing one of these way back when? Its pretty trippy jazz at any rate and Joe was as usual awesome!

  • why use a cube?

  • We work with what we have.

  • We worked with what we had.

  • @Ivek89 dont diss it! its a damn good amp.

  • @MrWoodoop it's alright.. nothing special. you get what you pay for.

  • @Blompcube watch this, you get more than what you pay for, this is its bigger, more equiped cousin but the sound modelling is exactly the same. i know its great because i have one. its cosm effects are modelled on some of the best amps in history and the amount of ppl who come over to me and say "thats some sick tone!! what d'you use??" just makes me smile even more :).

  • @MrWoodoop look i'm not trying to crush your illusions or anything, but people have approached me and said my tone is good when i've been gigging with some absolute junk that sounded downright awful to me, like a marshall MG with a Boss DS-1

being modelled on some of the best amps in history means nothing when the quality of the modelling doesn't do them justice.. yeah it's decent for the price but it's nothing amazing.

  • @Blompcube it wont let me post the link so just type:

    roland 80x cube review

and click on the first one with alex hutchings.

    enjoy and believe :)

  • @MrWoodoop i've used roland cubes enough to tell me more than any product demo ever can.

  • Do you know where one can pick one of these up in Canada? I have a strat, but I haven't seen these anywhere lol!

  • the hh is so much better. ascetically and to the ears.

  • I'm drooling for that guitar... must touch it!!!

  • jaguar is new jag stang?

  • @jack15877

no the jag-stang was a hybrid between the Fender Jaguar and the Fender Mustang created by the lead singer of Nirvana (R.I.P.) Kurt Cobain :)

  • I thought the newer Jaguars didn't come with the mute?

  • Jagmaster is another option. It has the same solid alder body and 24" neck. But it has the Strat bridge and double humbuckers. Less than 300 dollars and well worth the money. Lots of great parts available to modify it any way you like, also. If i buy a guitar with solid tailpiece it will be an Epiphone Dot or other Gibson type guitar.

  • John: Excellent exposition of the Jaguar - bravo! One quibble: It was not (as far as surf music) the "guitar that started it all" - it's predecessor (by two years) the Fender Jazzmaster, was. Other than that, a great video!

  • I need all the help I can get! Thanks!

  • @johnhguitar You are welcome - your series of videos are great. Personal interest: My "Holy Grail" (I love surf) is the Mosrite Ventures Model, which I own.

Ever played one? Comments? Don't be afraid of offending me - the Mosrite is too distinctive to be to everyone's taste. (PS: Loved your Gretsch video - I also own a Country Gentleman!)

  • The Mosrites use to come with tiny frets which aren't good for bending notes. Since I was into blues that didn't work for me. I always liked the way they looked and sounded and I loved the surf music people played on them.

  • @MelosAntropon True, but when surf guitarists started using the Jazzmaster (instead of the jazz players Fender had aimed at when they introduced the Jazzmaster at '58 NAMM) Fender actually created the shorter-scale Jaguar specifically to meet the needs of surf guitarists. Both were considered "high-end" guitars by comparison to the Stratocaster (and the Telecaster, which the Strat was supposed to replace). Funny how plans sometimes work out.

  • hey john i've been watching some of your videos, you're a great player, i was wondering if you can help me with a little something, is the classic player special reissue as good sounding as this one? and also, can a jaguar play like blues and pink floyd kinda stuff?, thanks dude.

  • you see the Jaguar pickups are very close the strings, but strat pickups have to be set a certain way..what gives? they both are single coil pickups, I dont buy the magnet pull theory.. I like my guitar loud and clean/dclear sounding. Whats your take John?

  • Listen up! If the pickups on the Strat are too close to the strings the guitar won't play in tune. The strings get pulled sharp especially when you're on the higher frets.

Thanks for the comments and everyone keep an open mind.

  • hey john i'm wondering if its possible to install that muting system on a jaguar hh or maybe even on a les paul? and by the way thank you for your reviews i find them very informative.

  • I thought they came with it? Yes I'm sure you can. Thanks

  • man can't you play it clean for just a little bit.

  • fucking love this guitar!

  • Full review, thanks John

  • can you killswitch on it?

  • i like the the dorky look of the jaguar/ jazzmaster. i love how different each model is in the fender guitar line. Fender is RAD. Even the modern Corona era fender models are pretty cool. Over priced? sometimes. But hey what isn't overpriced these days.

  • One of the worst bridge designs ive seen. Too many switches. Makes the guitar look too busy. I guess it looked cool in the 60s. But looks dorky now. The guitar has potential. Jagmaster has a better bridge option. And better pickup options as well. And eliminates the busy Early space age looking switches.

  • Anyone know how well a jaguar can do a David Gilmour-ish type pink floyd sound? Or earlier Syd Barrett kind of sound?

  • Im saving for one of these, not really because of Kurt, I mean I love grunge but I also like to play punk and heavy metal

  • hey, John,is the Jaguar a good leadguitar with overdriven sounds?^^

  • @WhoTheRollingBeatles Honestly, never tried it but I don't think the stock pickups are thought to be good for distortion but don't listen to me I'm ignorant.

  • @johnhguitar okay, thank you very much for your answer!^^

  • @johnhguitar didn't cobain use a jaguar & distortion?

  • @WhoTheRollingBeatles There is a jaguar with humbuckers, I think it handles the distortion better than those single coils!

  • @MrLosfuegos that's true. thx m8!

  • @WhoTheRollingBeatles

Actually this instrument has been used for many bands of the shoegaze genre. While that might not be the exact genre your hoping to use it for it generally pushes the distortion and overdrive envelope much more then metal or rock bands do, so I think it's safe to say you'd love to use this instrument.

  • @WhoTheRollingBeatles But Kurt Cobain used this guitar alot and he made it sound very "overdriven" with heavy distortion.

  • you make it look gay. i felt a sickly feeling in the pit of my stomach.

    turn on the distortion please

  • @anaemiabag

shut up emo kid. go listen to paramore or something.

  • @sulayman44 you think im an emo kid? nice assumption asshole.

you wouldnt know fuck all about what im into mate. listen to meshuggah and

then have a nice hot cup of shut the fuck up

  • @anaemiabag

so you're so macho because you listen to meshugar? hahaha oh you're into that heavy mental stuff i know. and that makes you all knowing when it comes to guitars.

hahahha go home and listen to your kind of music and maybe you can do a colombine to save you name.

  • @sulayman44. fighting on the internet is like competing in the special Olympics, it's easy to do, and even if you win: your still retarded. I don't see why people do it honestly

  • I'm saving up for this baby. My strat happens to work great with grunge, but I want one of these cus of curt cobain, and I love the style.

  • @3442grunge i don't mean to put you down or anything. it's an amazing guitar to have anyway. but i read that kurt cobain modified his jag hugely. there are websites that say his modifications. so i don't think a new jag will sound like kurt's jag.

  • nice sound but not

    great playing

  • thanks for the explanation - i always wondered what all those switches were for

  • it s better to buy a mustang or a jaguar?

  • @stavroswrc depends on what youre playing,

  • @stavroswrc well, some players say that jaguar and jazzmaster do require heavy strings (many players use flatwounds) but mustang is ok with light strings. Of course the tremolo must be adjusted properly to stay in tune.

But remember: don't buy without trying (amplified!) and don't believe the hype! If you play grunge or metal you will be disappointed once you hear the sound of single coil pickups. These guitars were designed for surf and r&b -players!

  • @RedPetrol76.. thanks a lot.. but in the end for which guitar you are reffered to? i usually play grunge.. u think that the mustang is the best choice?

  • I played one of these at Guitar Center today. After trying many types of guitars over the years it was my first time playing a Jaguar.

I was surprised at how different it was from my strat. Loved the neck and the sound was very cool.

I played it through a Twin Reverb so I did not get to hear it with some distortion but it was a pretty cool guitar. A nice change of pace.

  • whats the difference between the jaguar hh and this one. Is it just one has the humbuckers and this one has the single coil pickups, thats the only difference?

  • is the jaguar good for rock, punkis sounds or not??

because i want to buy a fender jaguar,or maybe gibson les paul standard

    What do you think??

  • well the jag was used by alot of grunge bands including nirvana
