It seems like Dweez is mostly focused on being a guitarist, in which case if he focuses that Zappa energy that way -- more narrowly than Frank's wide net -- who knows what Dweezil will come-up with to change the way we think about the instrument?
I think if you see Frank Gambale's DVD - it makes much more sense. When Frank does the technique at full speed its quite amazing 1, how quick it is, and 2 how easy it looks. Its a technique a bit like sweep picking. A bitch to learn, but once you have it, its there to stay and its hard not to do it!
It's economy of motion. Instead of hitting down on the G and then up on the B you just hit down both times so you aren't moving you hand past the string just to come back up to hit it.

I agree with your comment on his guitar being lousy, it sounds pretty shitty. But Ibanez and Caparison suck balls. They have no clean tone. I'll take a squier before i play an ibanez.
You mean it probably COSTS a lot more than an Ibanez. You pay a lot just for the Gibson name, in my opinion. I'm not saying Gibson is bad. But I think you get a lot more bang for your buck with Ibanez.
its pretty much sweep picking with an up stroke every now and then if you're interested in learning it google sweep picking theres LOADS of really helpfull sites.... dont become one of those filthy sweep arpegio whores though hahaha the kind of stuff this guy does is so much more interesting
I believe they refer to the "Down-Down-Up" / "Up-Up-Down" pattern as "Economy Picking". I find it quite difficult to learn and as Dweezil indicates it's even harder to pull off when you suddenly have to switch to alternate picking and back. This bit is gonna take me a few years to master...
