Holy fuck-a-roni! I NEVER saw this video before! I loved Journey growing up, and this video of then doing this is like from another world! That jam that Herbie and Neal do is just awesome!!! Man, REAL music and REAL musicians is just pure awesomeness! :)
The complete lineup of Journey isn't involved with this, I'm pretty sure this is Herbie Hancock's Headhunters with Steve & Neal added - don't think Journey could be this funky!
WTF? Never head them do this tune and I'm incredibly freaked, in a good way, by this funked-up version of the band. Wow!!! Herbie Hancock jamming with Journey and pairing up in an intense, fun-filled exchange with Schon?!? Hallelujah!!!
OK , here's my comment , Junior Walker & the All Stars did the best version of this song and I'm sad to say (not really) THAT THIS VERSION IS ALOAD OF CRAP
Ha read in the info that the tags are "pop rock blues"sure but with a nice big fat Funky gravy poured all over it.oh and makes me think about a "critic"like Dave Marsh who gave all Jrny albums one star...when a genius like Herbie Hancock wants to jam with you, means a hell of a lot more.
Uhhh, Herbie's getting not only getting paid here, but getting TV exposure, which Jazz guys get about as often as do lepers and Martians. He'd probably play have played with ABBA or Alvin and the Chipmunks under similar conditions.
ah Dan, how do you know that Herbie Hancock hasn't got musical integrity? you don't know shit dude. Jazz musicians play Jazz festivals, and they get more then most rock bands.Besides Jazz cats are into it out of love for the music never for the money.
Sorry, Moe--I have as much faith as anyone in Herbie's integrity but there's no chance on God's green earth that by the late 70's there's ANY jazz guys passing up national exposure with a band then getting monster-popular (guaranteeing large TV viewership) just b/c his integrity wouldn't permit. Hey, I love (and saw) the pre-Steve Perry Journey and have great respect for Neil, Gregg and Aynsley Dunbar (especially), but--like everybody else--Herbie's had mouths to feed. (Ya' can't eat integrity.)
Dantean, you seem to know about the history of jrny? great. but you don't know shit bout Herbie Hancock. He is so much more than "Jazz". Just check Wikipedia to read just a glimpse of what Hancock achieved by the time this was recorded even.He was at least just as "big" as Jrny was in '79. He improvises , blends Funk with Jazz , RnB, name it he tried it.and never ever makes the same record twice. But whatever Dan. That you even think Hancock did this gig for the money says more bout you than him.
Not prepared to argue Herbie w you as I didnt start digging him til 72 when I got turned ESP (the '65 Miles disc w Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams)--the one w Miles & wife on the cover (the one he made give up dancing on Bway). Theres nothing I can tell a Wikipedia-reader about jazz--you being an expert & me just a guy preferring the hard bop of the Miles quintets w Coltrane 2 this the last pre-fusion Miles (when Herbie was replaced by Corea & Jarrett). Thx 4 explaining jazz 2 me.
hehehe I don't dig jazz never have never will. I like his funk side and the skill to fuse about anything and come up with new stuff therefor:Hancock is a genius, not in it for the money, as you so bluntly stated. That was all that started this useless argument. Outta here, enjoy the music you hear.
Am I the only one that did not appreciate the people doing their annoying and distracting little hand dance on the stage where Steve wasn't able to have full use of the stage? Steve was great anyway! I guess those were dancers that were frustrated they couldn't be on stage. It was ok to dance all around the stage but not on the stage imho.
The hand jive stuff didn't bother me at all - a bunch of people having a lot of fun and getting into the music. The way the mic was placed didn't give SP much use of the front part of the stage runway anyway. The people furthest from the stage showing off for the cameras however...
Cool, groovin' version. Journey did a version the year before in October '78 during their King Biscuit Superjam sessions (inc. Tower of Power Horns), which was never broadcast or officially released, although the audio is out there (and Roadrunner from '78 is here on youtube)
why can't we purchase this?! Is it on any album?

Check out Herbie Hancock's home-made portable keyboard.
It's like an old farfisa organ with two leather belts tied to it!!
Solid jam though!

The most amazing improvisation you will ever see, they don't do this anymore, they cant.

They've got some fucking soul with this song :D I wonder why they couldn't officially release it as a song?

One helluva jam, and I wish to god the Midnight Special would release this performance, just as they did the Infinity stuff.

Happy Birthday, Steve Perry!
Embrace & enjoy the BIG 6-0!!!!
For more than 30 years, you've given me & legions of other longtime fans both BEAUTFIUL MEMORIES & UNFORGETTABLE MUSIC.
I followed you from the verrrrry beginning, thru the '80s, on thru FTLOSM.
LOVED EACH & EVERY MOMENT & WOULDN'T TRADE THEM FOR ANYTHING.
Your music (solo & with STEVE PERRY's ~JOURNEY~) has been part of the Soundtrack of My Life. (Bob Dylan's provided much of the rest. ;) ALL THE BEST.

Don't know why they all think they have to go on some realuity show/contest to play music? Shows like this (with Journey) will always be the best...
