  • proud math geek :)

  • Where can I get the chords for this song?

  • You probably thought this equation was differentiable here.

    Nope, Chuck Testa.

  • hahahahah

  • Lehrer is the german word for teacher, fits him :D

  • @georgeorwelI study shows that if your name is also the name of a profession or something assosiated with one you are more likely to work in that profession as an adult, this is known as nominative determanism

  • Hey dawg, we heard you liked calculus, so we put a function in yo function so you can derive while you derive.

  • what is the tune of this song from???

  • he uses his left brain with his mathematical skills, and his right brain with his musical skills.

    The man is a legend!

  • @x0xbethaNyyx0x actually playing music is a global process :P

  • @ninjatoothpaste well, you learn something new everyday haha thanks for that!

  • @x0xbethaNyyx0x There was some study done with kids and IQ tests, my memory is vague on this but as I recall they had a control group, a bunch learning to us PCs and a group learning to play the piano, after however long it was the % increase in IQ score was iirc 0% for the control, 15% PC and 20% piano.

  • @ninjatoothpaste that's interesting actually, nice to know!

  • Tom Lehrer is my inspiration! Like him, I am a math professor with a musical muse. I offer no comparison; nonetheless, I am delighted to direct you to a video that I made with my students: Please consider viewing the "Derivative Rag".

  • he's probably one of the smartest singers of the 20th and 21st century

  • Don't drink drive. It's a laundry detergent.

  • Knowledge is power. Look at this song.

  • although music IS math, in a way

  • @stevnated Too bad when the pitch is mathematically perfect it sounds awful to humans. People are still screwing with "tempered tunings". Write in the key of C and then take a Fourier Transformation to the audible wave form, and do not call me in the morning. I an not sure which I love the most Derivatives or a good 3rd level Determinate. I suppose neither.

  • @Satchmoeddie Good point (I think). I'm not that informed about it, but I bow to your (obviously) superior knowledge on the subject! In any case, I LOVE Tom Lehrer. Oh, and don't forget about rhythm... definitely math. :)

  • @stevnated

    Pythagoras would agree.

  • No! If you happen to love math AND music ... this guy is ... the best ever because most musicians are strictly artists, you know.

  • if you don't understand his humor you are of to low inteligence

  • @volk1308

    *too

  • Why did he go on to want to make a bunch of math music? His political silly songs were better

  • @greedyhips22 He is a mathematician and he felt like it.

  • Ouch. The way his voice fails at the end nearly made me cry. Poor guy.

  • @0mni42 He is probably, something like 60 years old..

  • @albi7

I know, but imagine telling someone that they're too old for their passion anymore... heartbreaking, no?

  • @0mni42 Yes it is.

My favourite singer has this problem too...

  • this makes me want to review my calculus!

  • LOL x) don't hate, integrate! and dont drink and derive' are corny and yet i havent ehard em before x) MUST use these in class

  • awesome!

  • When a mathematician says 'carefully' it means they are omitting steps you need to take in order to get the right answer. In this case, when you 'take the quotient and now carefully... Send Delta X to zero' you need to make sure you recompute the change in Y, because that changes.

I think I just confused myself, LOL.

  • 12?

  • music and math, heaven!

  • THAT IS FANTASTIC... IT IS ALL SO CLEAR TO ME NOW...

    (clear as mud)...

  • Comment removed

  • =] i love this guy =]!!

  • Don't hate, integrate!

  • I'm taking high school calculus right now and we're just getting into derivatives...fun stuff ^_^...this song actually makes sense now.

  • don't drink and derive though.

  • @TheDavynator0

Why not? The results are endlessly amusing. :D

  • I would love to go to one of these things.... to bad im to young to "derive" lol

  • You're never too young to derive(!)

  • lol true

  • Yes, but never drink and derive.

  • Yes, Happy Birthday, Tom !!!!

making me smile for over 40 years now .... and occasionally learning a wee bit along the way.

    THANKS !!

  • HAPPY 81st BIRTHDAY TOM LEHRER!!!!!!!!!

  • Tom Lehrer = Genius

  • it was surprisingly entertaining (not as good as "I will derive")

  • my calculus teacher would love this
