FANTASTIC! Thank you for posting this, I couldn't help but subscribe. A little piece of justice was served in behalf of steam and steam lovers that day...go #844!!! WOO HOO!!!
I love this. Where is the last part of the episode? I saw that someone has another part, after this, uploaded that contains stuff about 0. Winston Link, the Norfolk & Western, and Steamtown. Do you have this last segment? If you do, could you please upload it?
The Union Pacific Big Boy was classified as a 2-8-8-2 so it would have been longer than the Challenger because it had four extra drivers than the Challengers.
Totally! Would you believe that my dad and I happened to stumble on the 4449 on accident? Twice!
The first time, we went down to a UP yard to check out some freight train action, came around the corner of this great building in them middle of the yard, and there it was. I was six or seven at the time, and it was IMMENSE!
The second time, we were train-watching in Wishram, WA when it pulled up unexpectedly and parked right in front of our truck for a few hours. I really love that thing.
haha, a 1940's steam engine had to help out a "modern" deisel because it broke down, totaly pwned you deisel trains, but i wish they would bring a big boy back, that would rule beyound comprehinsion, STEAM RULES, DEISEL DROOLS!!!
SPANISH: Vaya, increíble historia ésa de que una máquina de vapor le ayude a las modernas diesel, toda una historia digna de contarse. Ésas cosas no suceden a diario. 5***** y favoritos.
ENGLISH: What a story! a steam engine helping modern diesels! and it was here at the exact moment, it´s like a miracle! AMAZING!!!
Yes, the 3985 seems to enjoy when it pulls the stacktrain. I wonder how heavy and long that train was. The 3985 are probably more powerful per horsepower than a Saturn 5 rocket.
4:08 - 4:52, Bob and 844, the real heroes of the day. All three diesels couldn´t get the train over the hill, but the 1940 steamer pushed it easily over while pulling her own train!
@Leadfoot866, I agree. While diesel locomotives may take less time to get started, they cannot match a steam locomotive in terms of sheer, magnificent power. Small wonder that so many people love the old steam locomotives, as I do, too.
oh by the way the story at the end reminds me of one of the Thomas the Tank engine stories were Henry the engine has to push and pull a train with two diesels that failed while pulling their trains.
YEAH 844 rocks.pushing a stalled freight train and pulling its passenger special at the same time is cool.and the engineer on the freight didnt know it being pushed by a steam engine until 844 started pushing it up the hill.WAY TO GO 844.that is what i call steam railroading.heres to the union pacific railroad keep both of those magnificent steam locomotives running.
Dude, the story at the end with the 844 made my backhairs stand up. I was so happy when I heard that. And when I saw 844 and the Challenger pulling FREIGHT!!!
That day in 1996 was an epic win for steam engines throughout history.

Steam would have lasted a lot longer had it not been for the anti pollution laws. I'll take steam any day over the diesels.

"...his modern diesels were being nursed back to the shop by a 1940s steam engine."
One of the best stories in railroad history!
3 modern, high-tech diesels were assisted by a 60-year-old steam engine.
Well done, 844!
