Guys I have the same problem with my sony vaio laptop, every fucking 3 seconds strange noise coming from somewhere CPU fan or motherboard, just rack my head each time I switch on.
very recently I brought it the sony service, after 5 weeks waiting they just reinstall all the softwares which i could do myself.
send it in to sony.. they had a notice on their website about this model... they fixed mine for free two years ago even though it was no longer covered by warranty because it was a defect at the manufacturing level
haha, yeah, mine does the same fucking thing, in fact, it's so loud right now i can't really hear yours. i took mine in because it finally overheated and the guy said he just cleaned the fan out and its fine, but here we are like 3 weeks later and its fucked again. not only that but the laptop is insanely difficult to take apart and clean yourself. thanks a lot sony. the noise is so loud i can't even think straight.
Okay....this could be 2 things...the fan or the hard drive. Try to get a can of compressed air...and blow into it. Also...take it in and ust demand a new fan...trust me, money talks. Theyll put a cheeseburger in your computer if you give them money too. If youre sure its the fan...go fix it...itll be 40-65 bucks...get-er done.

I can hardly hear yours over the sound mine is making. It just goes on for ages, then suddenly stops, and then starts again the next time I turn it on. Any hints?
Wow, look at you 4chan members bitching about sony. I plan to actually get one because my Lenovo is breaking (Never buying one of them again). Also, I own a Sony Vaio all in one desktop from 2003 that is working better than my 1.5 year old Lenovo.
I had this problem last week. I found a link for a company that offers info on this. I tried to post a link, but gay youtube won't let me. Just go to dragora.com and click the solutions link. It costs $25, but they gave me info to get it fixed for free even though it wasn't under warranty so it saved me time. I took my laptop to the local computer store and they said they wanted $175 to fix it so it saved me a crap load of money too. Just thought I'd share.
I also have the loud sound from my laptop and its also a Sony Vaio. Its not the fan but the hardware. When I try to type, the sound comes up and the things I try to do freezes for a few seconds and returns back to normal.

I had mine repaired by Sony and I haven't presented any warranty card nor receipt. They told me that I should be prepared to pay but when my laptop was back, they said that the repair was completely free. They even changed my LCD for free!

@NightyWalker lol... Yeah I know Sony did extend the warranty for the fan to 2 years... but it made no difference to me considering you still have to ship it overseas to get the warranty. Really had no choice but to fork out $200 to get it fixed here.
i have the same issue with my laptop, so i checked in the sony website and i found that this model have a warranty recall for this issue that extends the warranty 36 months more, i live in mexico so i call the service center and they say that this issue is cover by a global warranty so now they are fixing my computer for free, and i purchase the equipment in canada...maybe you should call to the service center to ask for you warranty extension
hi, i commented on this before, but i finally found my solution.
i brought my laptop to a sony store, and they offered to send it to the headquarters (or somewhere like that, sony owned). and there was a 70 dollar fee, but they sent it away to be fixed. it came back completely fine, all the files were still there. they cleaned the screen and laptop itself, and the fan is now fixed!
it doesn't make the noises it used to. so you should try this, it worked for me!
lol my laptop does this too but i cleaned it out with condensed air and it stopped for a while but unfortunately it came back, i have recently realised that my power options at high and when i lower it the noise stops and it works like normal
mine starts when i start my laptop but i stops after i put it to sleep and back up again...wtf? barely had it for a year...had the fan cleaned but it started up again....

Had similar issue and I replaced the fan nylaptopparts . com and reapplied thermal compound and so far so good. so maybe you can try that. Good luck with your lawnmower / laptop. (maybe you got some sort of invention going)
Damn, I have a CS320 for about a year now AND my fan started acting up and I had to wear a headphone to hear your video! I hate it, it's so annoying and I thought that I that it explode on me one day. to tell you the truth it sounds like the fan is speeding up you should put you hand by the vent and try to feel if their is more airflow when it makes the noise because thats what it sounds like to me. It could also be your HDD. Best thing to do is buy a air can and blow the dust out

I couldn't get it repaired because Sony said my receipt was not readable anymore... Whatever. Also, it stopped for a while, and now it's come back, but with a louder and worse noise. I switched back to my old hp laptop for school. My vaio one is at home.
im using cs36 for 9 months and yet i havent experienced that fan noise... may you can use a vacuum to suck the dust inside the fan, maybe it can help...
By the way I have the Vaio Z series and it works brilliant. No fan noise at all. In fact, I never hear the fan. The keyboard is one of the best for typing, the computer is fast and very responsive plus it's very light and easy to carry. I really like it, however, the CS series is damn stylish! The colors on it are so well painted, and sony confirms that the paint is the same as used on cars! No wonder why it looks so good. And that's the reason I want a CS, but the fan is making me back off.
@polarizedEnemy Dude I finally got my answer! Now I'm going for the E series! It is the same as CS but with out the fan problem and also with a bigger screen and better processor! I am so glad that sony released the E series. I advice any one like me that wants to get the CS but is worried of the fan problem to go with the E series!

had completely the same problem with my cs laptop. After a while it gets even worse. The only solution is to change the fan. SInce its been only 7 months your guarantee is still applicable, therefore I advise you to take it to them and demand replacement. Other than that, I think there is no other way

Yeah this was happening to me today. But I got some compressed gas and it went back to normal. A bunch of dust came out when I blew inside. It still makes some noise but not as much. Hope that helps.
I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop, and the fan makes a really loud grinding noise, not like this, but it sounds like something is stuck on my fan, preventing it to do a full spin. I'll get it with some compressed air, and if that doesn't work, it goes to service.

I have a vgn-cs110D I bought it months ago. after 1 month the fan started to make such a noise!. I took it to Sony service, it took 3 weeks that they fixed it!. After 2 months the sound started again. I called them. they said " Don't worry! it is so nice of us that we give you 1 year extended warranty for this problem for this series! take it to service center again! They will fix it" and i asked if the problem happens again? they said " you have to pay probably!!" this product is rubbish!
My VAIO CS is doing like the first noise... but today it turned off suddenly, and doing a research, now I found that it's a problem on some models of VAIO... The most embarrassing thing is to talk via microphone using SKYPE or any other program... & people always ask about that annoying sound.... :(
Gah same here! I have a Sony Vaio CS115J and have already replaced the fan once! It is better than the last fan (which must've had a bad bearing because it began making a grating noise), but now for a couple months now has been making this same noise you hear!

WOW. I've had my sony cs310 for less than 5 months and it started making the exact same noise a couple days ago. I think it's because the fan somehow got dislocated because I was moving my laptop around when it started.
Don't even bother bringing it to Geek Squad. I tried that and the guy told me they could only ship it off to Sony for me. I'm really dependent on my laptop for school so I can't afford to ship it off and wait for it to be fixed. Best bet is to go to a Sony Style store near you
It really makes a difference in computer performance (i.e. faster and doesn't overheat) when the vents are not clogged with debris. It's like having clogged lungs. Your computer cannot breathe because its 'breathing passages' are clogged. I wonder if Best Buy people could fix it...Geek Squad or something. I only hesitate because it would cost money. I tried to do it myself, but the one screw is stripped. I doubt the bottom comes off in one piece anyway. This is so frustrating.
My VGN-CS320J makes a loud noise too, but not that loud. I noticed that mine kind of freezes a lot in the middle of things (briefly) and gets hot faster. I would guess it's clogged up with dust. You probably need to clean it out. I would have cleaned mine already, but this laptop is more complex than my old one; i can't simply remove the bottom & clean out the dust. I have no idea how to fix this. I doubt compressed air will work either because this damn laptop has so many vents.

I'm guessing it's the same problem some newer desk top pcs are having. The computer companies thought it was a bright idea to make these fans come only when the CPU gets hot (or something like that) but they didn't consider that opposite the quiet time is a rather annoying "noisier time" than it would have been with the way the old fans were.

It's a hardware problem. the fan is defected. it only became more silent in windows 7 since windows 7 supports better power management thus making the fan run slower=silence.
though pretty soon it will just get worse like mine. got mine's fan replaced by solid-service here in manila philippines. I'm glad sony here in our country do what it does best, REPAIR THEIR FAULTY MEDIOCRE LAWNMOWERS!

They only took my laptop for free shipment to taiwan for repairs, since i have purchased the sony extended warranty plan.
it's similar with apple's applecare. only worst. but the good thing is my fan's been replaced. if you bought your cs from SG, you'll probably want to call the SG hotline found on your manual and coordinate with them where you can get your cs' fan replaced. spending on overseas call is already a bad thing.
P.S. try visiting vaio square in MOA, ask for help.
Agreed with NoEyesOnMe. My CS36GJ is only 4 months old and the hitching/spluttering noise the fan makes is driving me mad. But as I bought mine in Asia, I'm not sure if the Sony guys over here will take it in eventhough it's still under warranty.

although i was kind of disapointed to see the same fan but newer get put in. I thought they had made a new fan with some improvement. But it looks exactly the same as the original. I sure hope it doesn't start acting up again though. and the sony guy assured me it wont.
just like mine. take a look at the old fan. the chinese brand is what made it sound noisy. but then again... it got replaced by a chinese brand too but this time it's a MAGLEV FAN SAME WITH APPLE'S MACBOOKS.
I suppose the maglev fan doesn't have much friction as the old fan. (obviously)
WoW okay i called the Sony Company like 6 days ago and they set up an appointment with a Sony Tech to come to my house and fix the fan and all that. They ended up just replacing the fan. So yeah i suggest you call the Sony Company first before taking it anywhere else. They fixed mine in less than a week and no charge what so ever. um for this problem Sony extended warranty for 2 years from the day you purchased it.

take the whole back plate off, access the fan and clean it out.
mine was the same way and now runs like new.
if that doesnt work replace the fan

I know how you feel. My fan was making a horrible sound and, one day, it just won't spin anymore!
I had mine repaired by Sony and I haven't presented any warranty card nor receipt. They told me that I should be prepared to pay but when my laptop was back, they said that the repair was completely free. They even changed my LCD for free!
Nevertheless, I won't buy Sony products anymore.

i have the same issue with my laptop, so i checked in the sony website and i found that this model have a warranty recall for this issue that extends the warranty 36 months more, i live in mexico so i call the service center and they say that this issue is cover by a global warranty so now they are fixing my computer for free, and i purchase the equipment in canada...maybe you should call to the service center to ask for you warranty extension

hi, i commented on this before, but i finally found my solution.
i brought my laptop to a sony store, and they offered to send it to the headquarters (or somewhere like that, sony owned). and there was a 70 dollar fee, but they sent it away to be fixed. it came back completely fine, all the files were still there. they cleaned the screen and laptop itself, and the fan is now fixed!
it doesn't make the noises it used to. so you should try this, it worked for me!

Had similar issue and I replaced the fan nylaptopparts . com and reapplied thermal compound and so far so good. so maybe you can try that. Good luck with your lawnmower / laptop. (maybe you got some sort of invention going)

to tell you the truth it sounds like the fan is speeding up you should put you hand by the vent and try to feel if their is more airflow when it makes the noise because thats what it sounds like to me. It could also be your HDD. Best thing to do is buy a air can and blow the dust out

I couldn't get it repaired because Sony said my receipt was not readable anymore... Whatever. Also, it stopped for a while, and now it's come back, but with a louder and worse noise. I switched back to my old hp laptop for school. My vaio one is at home.

By the way I have the Vaio Z series and it works brilliant. No fan noise at all. In fact, I never hear the fan. The keyboard is one of the best for typing, the computer is fast and very responsive plus it's very light and easy to carry. I really like it, however, the CS series is damn stylish! The colors on it are so well painted, and sony confirms that the paint is the same as used on cars! No wonder why it looks so good. And that's the reason I want a CS, but the fan is making me back off.

had completely the same problem with my cs laptop. After a while it gets even worse. The only solution is to change the fan. SInce its been only 7 months your guarantee is still applicable, therefore I advise you to take it to them and demand replacement. Other than that, I think there is no other way

Yeah this was happening to me today. But I got some compressed gas and it went back to normal. A bunch of dust came out when I blew inside. It still makes some noise but not as much. Hope that helps.

I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop, and the fan makes a really loud grinding noise, not like this, but it sounds like something is stuck on my fan, preventing it to do a full spin. I'll get it with some compressed air, and if that doesn't work, it goes to service.

I have a vgn-cs110D I bought it months ago. after 1 month the fan started to make such a noise!. I took it to Sony service, it took 3 weeks that they fixed it!. After 2 months the sound started again. I called them. they said " Don't worry! it is so nice of us that we give you 1 year extended warranty for this problem for this series! take it to service center again! They will fix it" and i asked if the problem happens again? they said " you have to pay probably!!" this product is rubbish!

My VAIO CS is doing like the first noise... but today it turned off suddenly, and doing a research, now I found that it's a problem on some models of VAIO... The most embarrassing thing is to talk via microphone using SKYPE or any other program... & people always ask about that annoying sound.... :(

Gah same here! I have a Sony Vaio CS115J and have already replaced the fan once! It is better than the last fan (which must've had a bad bearing because it began making a grating noise), but now for a couple months now has been making this same noise you hear!
It's so annoying and damaging to the laptop as it isn't working correctly.

WOW. I've had my sony cs310 for less than 5 months and it started making the exact same noise a couple days ago. I think it's because the fan somehow got dislocated because I was moving my laptop around when it started.
Don't even bother bringing it to Geek Squad. I tried that and the guy told me they could only ship it off to Sony for me. I'm really dependent on my laptop for school so I can't afford to ship it off and wait for it to be fixed. Best bet is to go to a Sony Style store near you

I fixed the problem
Here in Brazil is dificult to have waranty.
So, I resolve fix by myself my vaio VGN CS
I removed the botton and the screws.
After I disassembly the fan. I put a little bit of special oil for machine (less than 1 ml) in the main axis of the fan.
The problem is solved.
Until now is ok and the vaio are working very well.

It really makes a difference in computer performance (i.e. faster and doesn't overheat) when the vents are not clogged with debris. It's like having clogged lungs. Your computer cannot breathe because its 'breathing passages' are clogged. I wonder if Best Buy people could fix it...Geek Squad or something. I only hesitate because it would cost money. I tried to do it myself, but the one screw is stripped. I doubt the bottom comes off in one piece anyway. This is so frustrating.

My VGN-CS320J makes a loud noise too, but not that loud. I noticed that mine kind of freezes a lot in the middle of things (briefly) and gets hot faster. I would guess it's clogged up with dust. You probably need to clean it out. I would have cleaned mine already, but this laptop is more complex than my old one; i can't simply remove the bottom & clean out the dust. I have no idea how to fix this. I doubt compressed air will work either because this damn laptop has so many vents.

I'm guessing it's the same problem some newer desk top pcs are having. The computer companies thought it was a bright idea to make these fans come only when the CPU gets hot (or something like that) but they didn't consider that opposite the quiet time is a rather annoying "noisier time" than it would have been with the way the old fans were.

A system restore has to be done and apps reinstalled...total nightmare!!! I want my money back..Sony defers to warranty and Sony Centre retailer to guarantee. Only after 2nd repair can I get an exchange..after 3rd, a refund. DON'T BUY SONY..tell your friends and file a complaint to consumer protection agency!!!

It's a hardware problem. the fan is defected. it only became more silent in windows 7 since windows 7 supports better power management thus making the fan run slower=silence.
though pretty soon it will just get worse like mine. got mine's fan replaced by solid-service here in manila philippines. I'm glad sony here in our country do what it does best, REPAIR THEIR FAULTY MEDIOCRE LAWNMOWERS!

They only took my laptop for free shipment to taiwan for repairs, since i have purchased the sony extended warranty plan.
it's similar with apple's applecare. only worst. but the good thing is my fan's been replaced. if you bought your cs from SG, you'll probably want to call the SG hotline found on your manual and coordinate with them where you can get your cs' fan replaced. spending on overseas call is already a bad thing.
P.S. try visiting vaio square in MOA, ask for help.

just like mine. take a look at the old fan. the chinese brand is what made it sound noisy. but then again... it got replaced by a chinese brand too but this time it's a MAGLEV FAN SAME WITH APPLE'S MACBOOKS.
I suppose the maglev fan doesn't have much friction as the old fan. (obviously)

WoW okay i called the Sony Company like 6 days ago and they set up an appointment with a Sony Tech to come to my house and fix the fan and all that. They ended up just replacing the fan. So yeah i suggest you call the Sony Company first before taking it anywhere else. They fixed mine in less than a week and no charge what so ever. um for this problem Sony extended warranty for 2 years from the day you purchased it.
