Hi this sounds really stupid but how do you teach a dog to get use to the clicker and then sit using the clicker? So sorry it's simple i just don't want to teach one of my doggies the wrong way
Thanks for posting such informative and inspiring videos. I taught my dog to target with each paw and we are ready for a verbal cue for each paw. I looked for another of your videos to teach him this but couldn't find it, can you give me advice for a verbal cue for each paw? Thanks!
Some dogs are sensitive to physical correction (not rough, just touches.) for instance a cocker spaniel will bite if they feel like you're touching them in the wrong way.
This tutorial is good to teach touch-sensitive dogs like cockers and others how to shake. Another tutorial about how to shake said to pick up your dog's paw and shake it and say "good boy/girl." a cocker probably wudnt like that.
Oh geeze--sorry. Please disregard my last comment. Computer's being weird and I can't delete it--that should have been in the search bar, not in the comments bar. LOL
On a side note, awesome and informative video! Thx! ;)
Hi I was just wondering what cue you are using for each paw? Love your channel by the way! It´s amazingly inspiering (sorry for my bad english I am from Sweden)
Great job! I just recently stumbled upon your videos and they are all awesome and very clearly explained. I tried this with my puppy and within minutes he caught on. At first he rolled over 15 times in a row and then barked at me but once he figured it out he was so eager to touch the target. I hope you do this for a living because you're very talented! ☺
I wanted to teach my Westie paw targeting but I have taught her before nose targeting. Now she just touches everything with her nose and doesn't want to use paw. I was thinking of placing a target on a floor and click for stepping on a target and than slightly lift the target so as to make her touch it when she will already learn to step it. Do you think it shall work?
I have a Bulldog that loves to use his mouth/teeth way too much and when he can't get the treat because he's not using his paw he will start to chew on it with my fingers in the way. Is this kind of training going to have to wait until the future or is there a way around this? Also, he sometimes scratches at it rather than taps it. I don't know if I should be clicking this just because he's actually using his paws rather than his face but I don't want to be teaching him to scratch either lol
this are great videos!! i love how you show the process clean and with an untrained dog, a lot of other videos use dog that are already trained. keep making videos!!
@Civicblabla The reason you use a clicker is because its a very distinct noise and there is nothing else like it, plus a click is insanely quick. Think how much slower it is when you clap your hands. You want to mark the exact action the dog doesi. Another way to mark it would be to use a word like "yes!" or "good!". Again though, it is not as quick or precise as a clicker.
Fab - I want to train my pup (when I get him) to use a push button bell and was wondering how I could do it. So is this pup a new addition to your family?
@NormyPie Pup has arrived and we've started paw targeting yesterday. He's a real nose dog so we got that straight away - the paw one is taking a bit longer!
Yippi; I used this tutorial to teach paw and then progressed to Shake and High five on the second session. Tipsy loved it. She has been so mouthy that I think it was an amazing surprise for her to use her paws.
Hey emily it's hannah. His foster mom i cant believe how well he is doing im so glad you took him home he couldnt have a better home!! cant wait to see more of you guys.. BTW what did you name him?
hey! :) His name is Tug. You did such a great job teaching him to only chew on his toys! Puppy training is a breeze with him. Hes the perfect match for my Chi- he is so gentle with her! More tutorials on the way, Tug has learned a ton of things! (I've had the flu at the moment so will get back to editing soon!) Email me at my real email rather than the youtube one as it gets so full I can't look through it all.
Thanks! I tried this and in five minutes he was scooting across the floor to put his paw on it! This is so much fun for the dog too :) My favorite part was when he was 'down' and putting his paw on it, and I scooted it a little out of his reach, thinking he would get up to paw it, and instead he reached over and grabbed it with his mouth, dragged it back, then slapped a paw on it and looked up at me like 'how'd you like that?'! I just LOLd! He's so lazy!
I tried this before but in an slightly different way and it didn't work very well. I'm now going to try it exactly as you do it, I hope this will work better!
great video... I always wondered how to start teaching something like this! Thank you for sharing. Your new pup is just adorable - what did you name him?
another fav and I loved how kiko stood there patiently whilst there was a treat on the floor... ohhh so sweet, and your puppy is soooo irresistible gosh just want to hug him ahaha!
great video, I saw you showing the foot target on a video you made ages ago and that is how I found out how to train Holly cross paws :-) that seem such a long time ago now! the foot target is so helpful for training so many things, I just love how you break things down, so easy to follow! I was just about to make a video on high five but you really covered it so well here already, we are all so lucky that you post these amazing videos :-)
You should still make it! as people might not know how to progress. Even if you made a targeting video, the more the better, especially when people SEE that it works with ALL dogs not just one. :)
Sounds like a nice fun easy one for Piper, she'll love learning this! And I'm guessing this targeting can be useful for other tricks you might want to teach in the future?
i know you'll come up with a great name for him :D keep up the great work, your the one who inspired me to do clicker training and its going very well with the little four month, but still not so great with my eskie. xD
Congrats with the new puppy Em, I hope to be getting a new dog very soon (my 8 year old Collie was put down last May). Very excited about getting back into clicker training! Thanks for the awesome vids!
Great video. Im glad you mentioned the part about a dog becoming dominate with one paw. That happened to my dog and it is very hard to get him to offer the other one.
Oh man you are good!..... do you ever get the feeling that some people don't understand what your showing them. Do you train for a living yet....It is such a different world to try and teach that to someone who doesn't have the same type of empathy

Is this in preparation for other tricks? What sorts of tricks will training this help with?
