  • I love Carlos, but he's been milking that same riff since 1968.

  • awesome!

  • just love this group, true musicians of funk, just one downfall carlos santana, very weak guitar work maybe better if he just stays with the latin sound, hes certanly not a funk groove guitarist.

  • PAr contre le publique de Montreux est toujours aussi froid....

  • CT!!

@marcusparks; yuh, no LP, bummer, but they got some good dancing in all the same.

  • The only thing missing from this video is Lenny P.

  • WOW !!

  • I pissed myself laughing at 3.56.....so great...go fellas, you the most.

  • If there is a manual for wrecking the organ...I'm sure Chester wrote the whole thing. As soon as he started playing...I got pretty giddy

  • I love Tower of power but miss old Santana. His modern music just doesn't have the strength as his first albums!

  • Ooih!

I thought all live music ended in the 70's..

Happy to hear music is still alive!

  • @ChokDK

Dave and Chester are the funk in TOP. Awesome.

  • yeah!!!

  • BEST HAMMOND ORGAN PLAYER!!!!

  • Chester blows me away. He's a master of funk/gospel, few can emulate. (Ignore the faux funk of that guitar).

  • Whew ~~~~~~ Chester Chester ....

  • i left the video playing and started doing other things while listening. then when the guitar started i was like.. that guy sounds a lot like santanas guitar..... then the guy screamed MR CARLOS SANTANA!!!!! I got like OMFG then I rewinded the video to watch that solo again xD hes awesome

  • Dig Chester Thompson stylin' on the Hammond B-3!!!!

  • The capital theater in Chatham only hosts washed up people lol

  • Old Dudes Dancing! Damn...toooooo hip!

  • Allow the criticism, and enjoy the music, jheez. At least be thankful that actual music performed by real musicians still exists.

What a solo by Chester Thompson though, and that sustained note for like half a minute, fuck, what a sound.

  • Their groove is about to over power Carlos,,,,,,,,,,,, Them boys is bad !

  • If there were ever music to raise the dead TOP would be it. You can't just sit.

  • @stymification, Damn straight! I remember going to a TOP concert and I was on some aluminum bleachers and when it was over my sister says, "those bleachers were pretty shaky" and I said, " I didn't feel them shaking" and she says, " cause you were the one shaking them!" : )

  • Kill it Chester! Damn what a groove...shit!

  • well ok, you like what he did I didnt, (hot guitar??). so Im all done with replying , go ask the others posters , btw if I was at that concert, I awould have blocked out his playing....so have a nice life , happy new year ,....& study its good for you...

  • Larry Braggs and Clyde King of AWB. We experienced these great bands and singers all in one night. HEAVEN.

  • What the hell is santana suppose to be doing ??

  • @tocolormemucsic44

Playing some hot guitar in his style as a guest of T.O.P.......dummy.

  • you realize you have revealed what you know about funk.....

  • @tocolormemucsic44

I know plenty about funk, playing bari & tenor sax since the 70's (though not so much lately). I've listened to TOP & other groups for decades, so I know a little. But this was more about showmanship. TOP can stand on their own work any day, but I doesn't hurt an 'act' to toss in a little variety now & then, and Santana with his totally different style helped provide that. The handshakes and hugs and respect shown Carlos at the shows end says it all...you big dummy.

  • @SaxyDan54 I dont think so

  • @tocolormemucsic44

Then what the heck do you think he's doing? You obviously don't know, since YOU asked what he was doing. Santana has his own style. TOP has it's own style. Like other groups, they invited Carlos to play at one of the best Jazz festivals with them. They, being the professionals they are, obviously had it in their minds that it was a good idea. I think the result was good. So if it's good enough for TOP, it's good enough for me! And should be for YOU, you big dummy!

  • @SaxyDan54 He plays pentatonic all the time, he pauses too long, ( cant figure out where to go next).....you need more study in theory, also read the other posts commenting his attempt to play along with this group, he dont belong here...as far as the hugs at the end...cmon they are just being nice ....read the other posts...bye

  • @tocolormemucsic44

How does Carlos playing pentatonic and pausing (a 'rest' is also part of the musical effect) relate to a need of me to study theory? And just because a handful of opinionated chuckleheads go on and on about how Carlos sucks, does that make it so? My opinion is Carlos did OK and I thought it was cool to see him play with TOP. If someone thinks otherswise, I could give a shit what morons think. Tell me you wouldn't have wanted to be at that show just cuz Carlos was there!

  • These guys are always amazing (!) ... and for how many years? Funk at its best!

  • I just got the Yamaha SD 435 ADG David Garibaldi Signature snare. Ohhhhhhhh mom !!!!!

  • upon further review I have absolutely no idea how garibaldi pulled those licks back to get back into time around 0:53, no click track in ears and it seems like he was def playing that in some sort of odd time...probably just experience from drumming for 30 or 40 years...Garibaldi and TOP kick ass!!!! what inspiration!! go funk urself!!

  • amazing how garibaldi and the band were so sharp after that first mini solo @ approx 0:30...I was counting the time and I feel sorry for the band for having to count that hard, bahah TOP and Garibaldi KILLS...FUNK MUZIK forever!!! Santana's solo blows tho, I have 2 private stock PRS' myself and he either rolls out so much tone or compresses the tone so much that it sounds vintage but in a really bad way..oh well he is a legend,..Santana and TOP forever!!!

  • @LATX777

I tried counting that, too...and it just doesn't seem to work out.

Maybe its the little riff hi plays before the band joins in...like 3 lick on each of the drums above the snare....ba-da-da, ba-da-da ba-da-da and POW. Bands I was in we used to use little trick like that to cue the ensemble back in, something the audience would not notice, maybe a high-ign to Mimi or something. LOL!

  • @LATX777 santannas solo???

  • @LATX777 santannas solo??? I also agree with you...

  • Man.. David Garabaldi is the funkiest drummer on this planet.

  • Man.. Garabaldi is drving this ferrari and pulsing the stuff out of this band..Love this cat.

  • What a lift! Hv already posted to my FB but would like to say again, if you're feet aren't tapping, head not nodding & hands not clapping you're soul is " Not Where it's at! Carlos too????????????? Gotta love GOOD MUSIC!

  • wo ist Rocco?

  • Awsome song !!

    But...

    What was that Carlos ???

  • TOP still cookin like it was 1975! Go CT!!!

  • haha santana's solo makes me laugh so hard!! sounds crap

  • yeah but carlos is from the bay area and they are all homies! East Bay grease!

  • AMAZING STUFF.. luv tower of power.. wud love to be going to italy at the end of august to hear them...

  • TOWER OF POWER KICKS BIG TIME ASS!!!!

  • You can't no better.. it's what it is. Chester is waaaaaaaaaay off the hook w/ this. Always gonna' love watching him. He kills keys. Thanks, y'all! B.

  • organ man..damn

  • I saw this live an nothing else compares

  • Can't type - knocked myself out.

  • @Roadsterscom Lol! Rocco! Killin it!

  • what can u say about chester...damn...

  • RARE STUFF!!!! Garibaldi Drum solo!!!

  • I love the tuning of David's drums. Really really nice. What a great group of musicians. Makes me want to play to my last breath.

  • I LOVE THEM!!! THey Enjoy themselves

  • chester thompson hell yeah!

  • @mugwaii2008

    I totally agree!!!

  • You think Carlos is weak, try listening to Steve Winwood play the organ, then listen to Chester play. Steve wrote some nice tunes, but I'm just sayin...

  • Santana outclassed..... what a disgrace to play an awful solo like that to TOP....!!!!!!

  • seems to be a bunch of squares at this show

  • THANKS a lot for this video. Just amazing.

    TOP, Thompson and Santana ....

  • WOW!!

  • Only two 2 words needed: CHESTER THOMPSON!

  • 2 more

    I AGREE

  • Featuing Bruce Conte! who should have played the solo !

  • yeah exactly!! thats exactly what im constantly asking myselg when i see these people in there!!! i cant sit calm listening to this!

  • How the f*** can the crowd just stand there like frozen zombies??

I'm having a hard time sitting up straight when listening to this on crappy laptop speakers..

  • I agree.... I get high on this, I laugh and I can't sitt still. I saw these guys in Stockholm last week. I was standing behind two men and I actually thought they were dead.... not a twinch nothing..... zombies maybe...?

  • Ah. T.O.P is coming to Oslo 17 Nov!!! YES!!!

  • If this don;t leave ya with a smile on ya face...well, then you a zombie! Cookin' baby...Cookin'!!!

  • Is there a chance to get it on DVD (I mean this version with santana and chester thompson) or was that also stopped by "drummerworld"?

  • T.O.P. off da chain!

  • Best thing that ever happened to TOP was for original drummer David Garibaldi to come back into the band over 10 years ago. Excellent musician and a great guy.

  • haha i love when they all start dancing

  • i am not big santanna fan for those who are hatin' let's hear what you can do.santanna is the man. Chester is from another planet the greatest.gardibaldi, dennis chambers, brain blades are God's of the drum, stop hating.

  • FUNK 4 EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I don't think Santana sucks stop hating him

Hes probably not used to this style. I mean seriously i doubt alot of you could do any better

  • God praise Chester Thompson

  • Comment removed

  • Garibaldi is one of the best.

  • awesome organ solo by Chester T.

  • True Dat!

  • Saw them in Charlotte 4/18/09. Fabulous. New CD is great. It was still cool that Carlos played with them, as most musicians would if given the chance. Yeah, he did suck, but not totally. A new fan base is building.

  • At the end of the day, Santana is over-rated. Think about this: the Dave Clark Five is in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Top isn't. WTF?

  • Tain't Rock, baby! Dis be Gawd's own Funk-a-Rama! ;)

  • @FpMLuser I hadn't thought of that..words fail me at the thought...did u know that the DCF were the biggest selling BRits after the Beatles...i think TOP is just too good, you can't just stick them in a glass case in an exhibit...

  • Carlos Santana´s solo sucked. I think it was too fast for him.

  • Carlos Shantana = Really Bad

  • so funky it hurts!!

  • Garibalidi was the absolute background of this group when they were at their hottest! So glad to see him back! He's so fuckin' funky!!!!!!!

  • Chester rocks. I have to take my hat off to Roger Smith for being the only guy that I've heard with TOP that has the right sound and the chops to fill Chester's shoes.

  • @funkular i couldn't agree more

  • Chester Thompson is a cold beast!

  • god santana was having one of his bad days... That solo was terrible.. ;(

  • It wasn't so bad, but he can't run with TOP

  • nah i think he was just out of his element it's like a guy who plays classical metal playing country there are some who can't and some who can.this is just bad as can be the groove is so awesome

  • i agree, too funky for him to groove with, he's not used to it

  • Trumpet player yawning at 2:36

  • If Lenny Pickett (he's LP, he don't breathe) hooked back up for a tour I'd travel anywhere in the world to see them.

  • Wow Santana got rolled by Rocco and Dave.

  • I'm going to see them tomorrow night in Annapolis, MD and cannot wait. It will be my chance to say Happy Anniversary to them all.

  • now thats a keyboard player mr chester thompson!!! incredible stuff!!

  • Love every track off the East bay Grease album. I wonder If they can do In the jungle anymore?

  • this takes me back to the great Lenny Picket's tireless solo on sax live back in the day. Yea!!! Chester you sound better now than you did 30 years ago!!! Jam TOP.... you make me smile.

  • ha ha...santana can't even come close to fit in that ultra tight pocket of T.O.P.

  • @JuniorShabbadu Meh, he plays a different style than funk. He plays a latin rock style. He can adjust well though, though I agree there might be a couple better guitarists to fit the bill.

  • @JuniorShabbadu you right ...he's waaaayyy out of his league...following Chester? whateva!

  • @JuniorShabbadu he gets a few moments..too much funk for him...

  • @JuniorShabbadu lol too true

  • @JuniorShabbadu No Comment but David did call Dennis Chambers to fill in for him.. :)

  • 40 yrs around and still going strong!! I saw them last night with another great group..AWB....BOTH WERE AWESOME!!!! TOP RULZ!!!

  • Now we're talkin!!!!

    Wow... Thanks... I needed that.

    Joe

  • WHOS THE SINGER

  • LB! Larry Braggs! great stage presence.

  • COME IN ROMANIAAAA !!!:(((

  • go to their website and post on their forum to get them to go to certain venues. they reply to all requests.

  • :) thx ... but i don't think that they will come in Romania... why? becouse funk and soul music - not an important part in romanian music... bad thing. see ya :P

  • may as well try. they like going around europe. you'd be surprised at the amount of ppl who like TOP.

  • thx for your suport

  • Saw them 2 Month ago in Nuremberg, was my second time, yeah, I say Yeah, best Band on earth!!!!!!!

  • Wow! That is the shit right there! 35 years after they started, they are better than ever!

  • woah.. just woah.

  • Yeah, Chester's been touring with Carlos for at least 15 years, but there's more to it than that, why they were there together. Uh, namely, they anchored the Bay Area in the 1970s!

  • saw them last week in Zurich.. unfortunately without Chester... :( he's the greatest!!

  • Just Great! Saw them yesterday in Oosterpoort, Groningen and it was incredible! :D

  • GRONINGEN!

  • This is a great video. We were blessed 2 yrs ago to have them free & Indoors, like this at the San Mateo County Fair grounds...They're the best!

  • Chester Thompson played with TOP in the past but now he does a lot of touring and playing with Santana. This is probably why they were both at this concert with TOP. Chester Thompson is true to form but what was that from Santana????

  • santana is great but out of his element.he can't funk like conte or tamlier.not his fault just not the way he plays

  • very true...you are absolutely right. Santana is a great player just out of his element here.

  • amazing kbd solo !

    everybody is kicking... !

like in the old good times

    no comment on Mr Santana...

  • this is the mutherfucker rite there

  • Indeed

  • Saw them in concert at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. John Lee Hooker and Bonnie Raitt were there, but these guys rocked the house. Thought I'd sleep in the park last night.

  • Totally brilliant funk, tower of power all the way but that santana's solo is terrible, disjointed,no groove. Why is he even there?

  • I just love it:D

btw garibaldi great thnx for the book ''the code of funk''it really helped me become a better drummer !

  • What's the worst part of this video? One word: Santana. The rest of this is performance is totally on top of the game and exceedingly brilliant in every conceivable way. Chester Thompson IS - and OWNS - the shit. Completely stupefying.

  • wow good quality......nice thnx

  • YEAH THIS IS -> HIP <-!!!

    i LOVE Funk ;D

  • I saw The Greg Rollie Band last Sunday. How come Carlos didn't crash that gig?

  • the true kings of funk

  • when God put lenny pickett out into the world he fused his soul with a sax. and the lord saw it was very good. then he kicked back, popped a bear and chilled.

  • lol...... so true :D

  • i don't believe i ever seen that put better.i couldn't agree more

  • popped a bear? lol hopefully with a 12-gauge

  • les tower of power ont trop la classe

  • Chester wasn't born with a hammond organ, hi was born BY a hammond organ!! This man is so amazing!! incredible

  • Santana cracks me up.

  • yea

  • dave garibaldi is one of the funkiest people on the planet!

  • TOP is the funkiest band in the universe!

  • naw bootsy's rubber band be da funkiest...

  • has anyone seen the keyboard mag video of CT playing "knock yourself out" on B3...? Incredible!

  • C.T. rocks max. That man was born with a Hammond Organ !

  • Haleluleah!!!

  • i thought he plays the drums

  • To make the confusion total - there are two Chester Thompsons. The Chester Thompson that you think of used to play drums with Phil Collins and Genesis - and has also played w/ Carlos. The Chester Thompson that I refer to is the keyboard player who has played with Carlos for many years and used to be the keyboard player in Tower of Power.

  • lol thanks i never knew

  • Fantastic!!!

Seen 'em in person over 30 times and this is probably the best.

  • Chester Thompson joins his old bandmates! OMFG!!!!

  • You're right - don't know where I got the idea... Duhhh..

This has to be the best TOP concert for sound and video I've seen on this site!! These guys are just SOOOO tight!

  • I think this was done in Montreal, Canada, not Switzerland.

  • nope its montreux. see david garibaldi's blog.

  • C. T.!

  • Little bit better job fitting in than the Hip video, tho still not really following ToP's phrase structure. Still, awesome camejo performance!

  • That is be cause Carlos Santana crashed the gig. I have been to several concerts where he has done this. It compromises the music.
